About this property

River cottage with pier

Beautiful view of the Chowan river from a 60' bluff. Recently remodeled, more space added. Great fishing area, nearby boat landing. Large screened in porch to sit and enjoy the view of the river. The cottage is beige in color with a bright blue roof. There are 3 levels to the cottage, with a large stair case going to a bright blue entry door. Or you can walk around to the back and enter the lowest level, and take steps from there. This cottage has 3 different stair cases in it, and unfortunately not handicapped accessible. The cottage will comfortably sleep 5 adults. There are 3 bedrooms on the main level, and a full loft that we have furnished with 2 double beds. There's a kitchen - living room area. The kitchen has all appliances needed to do your own cooking along with everything you need to make and serve your own meals . There is a washer and dryer in the lower level. There is internet and we have a TV with antenna for local stations and a DVD player, with a selection of DVD's to choose from when you aren't out and about.

Rustic, No-Frills, Beautiful View

Booked property to invite local family over for Thanksgiving dinner. Lots of quirks to this rustic-but-semi updated cabin. Was very appreciative that the kitchen had plenty of accessories and dishes to make and serve dinner, though it seemed that everything had not been used for quite some time. Bedroom space was great and good temp control for each room. Comfortable seating in the main area was hard to come by. Host was responsive when we had a couple of issues during the stay. Overall it met our needs and we appreciated the hospitality!

Enjoyed our stay & view of river

The beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed the big window overlooking the river, and our dogs loved running around the yard. We visited Merchant's Mill Pond State Park and enjoyed Tar Hill BBQ.

Family

quite relaxing river home very underrated, the pictures don’t do it justice. We made it work. There’s very cold AC and plenty of room for more than what the listing says! We most definitely will be returning. This is just an old fishing shack, it’s a family cabin or a cabin for anyone, that just needs a quick get away very clean and filled with peace

River View

Beautiful river view from a big window in the main room. It has a rustic fishing lodge feel and a long pier for fishing. My grand kids loved the attic room. The stairs inside and out are step as noted in the listing. Beds were comfortable for us. The high up river view was the best. Neighborhood was quiet and well kept, we felt safe.

Wonderful Weekend!

The home was great and met all our needs! Loved the screened in porch, my grandson loved the fire pit for his smores. The owners are wonderful to work with, overall we had a lovely stay. I would highly recommend, especially if you have a larger family or group staying in the home.

Great Fishing Cabin

Great location for someone fishing the Chowan River. Convenient to boat ramp in the subdivision (1/4 mi) and to Hwy 13 ramp (15 min drive). Probably not suitable for small children due to steep stairs but basic accommodations for fishermen and hunters at a reasonable price.

Beautiful Views

Description of property is very accurate, stairs are very steep. Very simple, no frills, cottage. The only reason why I am giving 3 stars is because there were small flys all over the bedroom windows, and the bedroom with the river view was covered with spider webs and debris so it was hard to see out of. There was also broken chairs and trash on the dock and the blinds were broken in bedroom and kitchen.

River stay review

It was great, plenty of supplies and just as advertised. The stairs are steep, but created no problem for us. The second bathroom is in the basement, which was a little inconvenient but it worked. The pier was great to tie up our kayaks, and take off from there. I would recommend!

Rustic Beauty

Very clean and a beautiful view. Our only issues were the sulfur smell in the water, that was overpowering, and the steep stairs. It’s hard to mark negatives because the place was very clean with tall comfortable beds. The view of the river was wonderful and it was a very quiet neighborhood!!

Beautiful setting to relax and unwind

Perfect spot for a family getaway. We brought our kayaks and loved being able to spend time on the river. We were in town for a baseball tournament in Ahoskie, the closest substational town and grocery location about 20 minutes away. The bedrooms don’t have real doors, and most connect to each other so it would work best for a single family or group of friends that all don’t mind waking up and going to bed at the same time. We spent a day exploring Edenton and visited the peanut factory up the road too. The neighborhood boat launch was very useful. Sunrises and sunsets were glorious. The stairs, as described in the listing, are very steep throughout the house. The owner and property manager were very helpful and kind.

Weekend for honeymoon shower

Clean and quaint cabin. I arrived about sunset. I struggled to get 40 lb. suitcase up the entry stairway. I did not reach out to the owner for the walk through upon arrival, so I fumbled to get the interior lights on. Thoroughly enjoyed the view of the river!

Great place.

My only complaint is the toilet. Please fix it! This is a great place to stay. We wanted a weekend family get away to a quiet place on the water to fish and kayak. This was pretty perfect for us. Just note the horseflies are relentless here. The house has plenty of room for a large group. It has everything you need for a weekend. Just bring your own food. Kayaking here was amazing. The views were amazing. Stairs in the house are steep so if you have mobility problems this isn’t the place for you. Thankfully we don’t so we had no problem. We would definitely go back. Next time we will bring a bug zapper for the horseflies lol

Great location, poor amenities

Location, location, location is what sells this place. The point on the river is amazing. Having a private dock where it's not so busy makes it even better. It's clean and recently renovated. Sorry, but that's where the good review stops. The inside staircase is ridiculously steep and if you arent 4ft tall and under, you will have to duck down. The entry steps are just as steep. Good to know if you have mobility challenges, like me, with bad knees. All of the sofas look like they were picked up on the side of the road from the 1970s; very uncomfortable. One of the wicker dining rooms chairs had a big hole in the seat. The bedrooms are the oddest arrangement. The bathroom is in the back of the house and you have to pass through, yes, right through, two of the bedrooms to get to it. For the price, these essential details should have been in the listing, I would not have rented it. You drive to the boondocks with the family and are stuck. There is nowhere else close to go. I would not recommend this place.

last Getaway For The Summer

Overall our stay was nice. The location was perfect. Boat ramp nearby, great boating and brim fishing. Didn't have to much luck catching catfish. We did have a couple of issues which were the steep stairs in the house and the breaker always going out but after moving the coffee maker downstairs we solved that issue. We would definitely stay here again.

About the host

Hosted by James Ernest Jones and Linda Jones

Host profile image
James Ernest Jones was born and raised in Hertford County, and his parents bought this cottage decades ago as a place to enjoy the river and get away from the duties of their farm for short periods of time. James Ernest is the sole owner of this property.

Why they chose this property

James Ernest had to make a decision to remodel this cottage, or tear it down because of damage done to the building over time. Guided hunting is popular in this area, and places to stay are at a premium, so the cottage was completely remodeled with hunters in mind. There are no frills in this cottage, but it is clean and comfortable and will be a welcome place for anyone to end a full day of hunting and fishing. It is located in a small subdivision called "Choanoke." The other residents live there full time, know James Ernest and his family and are good "crime watchers". This is a safe place to stay.

What makes this property unique

You should have most of the comforts of home in this cottage. The emphasis is on the hunting and fishing available to you, with our cottage giving you a good, safe, convenient place to stay while you hunt and fish. James and his wife Linda are close by, and along with our hunting guide Andy Eure, will be available to give you a good hunting and fishing experience.
