About this property

Newly renovated kitchen 2024. Dead end Street, Large Yard, not on a hilltop.

Classic Cottage Style, On the Lake, Nestled in a quant country lane surrounded by woods, tall pine trees, and the beautiful 75 foot stretch of lake front makes this timeless cottage an escape for families, friends and couples. A few things that I must mention to differentiate us for some other locations. The 75 feet of lake front is BIG, so it makes you feel away from it all versus some places that stacked tight with one right next to the other with 50 foot. This cottage is not in a channel, but right on the lake. This cottage is not on top of a steep hill with 70 steps, it is 6 steps down to the lake level. So, if you forget your sunscreen you do not have to go back up the 70 steps to retrieve it. If you like water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, boating, jet skiing, pontoon ridding, fishing, canoeing, grilling out, hiking, swimming, playing cards, bond fires, smores, and relaxing, then the Copper Roof Cottage is for you.

NOTE: PEAK SEASON requires a FULL WEEK to be rented, Fri (5pm) -Fri (noon) May 31-Aug 29. Thks.

Located near many fun family activities!!!

Families, Church Retreats, and Businesses: The cottage is perfect for gatherings of families, friends, church retreats, and business team building events that, after the day’s activities, would like to retreat back to their very own comforts of a warm and cozy cottage to watch movies, relax, or snuggle by the fireplace.
Take time to visit the Buffalo Preserve. You can also visit an award winning winery with excellent red and white wines available for tasting and purchase. If cars are your interest, you may enjoy two local speedways. You could also take a quick 30-minute drive and enjoy the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Museum which houses classic vintage automobiles from the early 1900's up to WW II era vehicles. Or visit the NATMUS Museum which houses vehicles from the post war years. Or visit another flavor of museum --- the Hoosier Air Museum (operated by the Hoosier Warbirds) at the DeKalb County Airport which features aircraft from throughout the history of aviation. Autumn offers an exceptional time...

The Days Events: The children will love exploring the surrounding land, the lakes edge, catching frogs and fish, while you relax in a chair watching with a hot cup of coffee. Latter the kids will go swimming, play on the raft, use the paddle boat, canoe, while you play along with them or take a nap. After lunch is a great time to get in your motor boat and water ski, water tube, hang out at the sand bar, or dock up to the 4h fair grounds to hike. That evening while the sun sets the fire pit is the place to be. Roasting smores, telling stories, enjoying each others company, being warmed by the fire as the children start to realize they are tire. Tuck them in and it is your time to catch up with your honey. How do I know this, I have a lovely wife and triplet children age 8. We have enjoyed this cottage for the last 8 years.

Local and Distant Attractions : I personally want every Family, Mother, Father, Child, and Grand Parent to get the most out of their vacation and dollar. Searching the web can still be a lengthy task with all of the links and pop ups so... Here are a few:
Local:
Angola small town atmosphere with movie theater, shops, antique stores, ice cream parlors,

Nice place to stay
We rented for the first time this summer and really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was easy to find and in the "calm" 3rd basin of Crooked Lake. It has a lovely backyard, and we enjoyed our time using the back patio. The cottage was clean with plenty of room for our family. We would stay again!

Just what we needed after a LONG COVID Winter
It was the perfect place to get away for a weekend and rent a pontoon. Having a new baby in the family makes it very hard to travel anywhere safely. This gave us the opportunity to remember what is important in our lives. FAMILY. It was quiet and the recommendation to rent a boat was so easy. THANK YOU. It is just what we all needed.

Great boating. Nice house.
Crooked lake is a dream for boating and watersports! This house is in third basin where the water calms quickly for skiing or barefooting and there is a slalom course too. First basin has a sandbar which is fun to party on. The beach by the house is nice for about six feet into the water, then is a little mucky and has seaweed, but it was plenty nice for the kids to play in the sand and water. The house is a little older but nice, lots of white noise with the air conditioners running and seemingly well insulated as the kids could sleep upstairs and didn't hear a thing from the adults downstairs. We had a great time and had no complaints!

Unsafe and worn out
I waited to get my deposit back to write this review. I walked into a cabin that had the gas stove running full blast and a coffee pot on next to it.. should have called the police but tried to reach the owner who was out fishing. Delayed having my daughter in law and son and one year old from arriving until I felt it was aired out. the home had not been cleaned .. washed the floor and counters before they arrived.. missed one day of rental. The rug is torn and dirty..these are old pix on their website and they had so many overloaded circuits with cheater etc that I unplugged all the old tvs etc that they had plugged in. There are digger wasps all around the home.. called about it because I am epipen allegic.. the response was a wasp spray left at the door.. Most of the lights had burned out and toilet seat was broken. Called the maintenance guy. pleasant but does not do stairs or bend so my husband replaced the seat and all lights. I never felt safe here.. duct taped the stove handles.. no safety so no little hands could turn and was stuck with a microwave for all our cooking. The owner never made an appearance to amend or apologize.. The outside is covered with spiders and webs and just a quick power wash could have ammended that.. this home is unloved and unsafe. The lake is nice in this area but a promised beach for toddlers had totally washed away.. raked some sand that way to make it safer but not as in the picture. Please note all photos are from much earlier as are the reviews. Also beware of the contract. I tried to cancel this reservation more than 90 days prior after I visited the site... the contract does not allow refund of your sizeable deposit at any time. I felt stuck with the place and tried to make do because I could not afford to lose so much money. I am a fool for not just walking out but had family members counting on this holiday. The neighbors thought that the previous renter was terribly upset and left on Thursday.. probably leaving the gas on.. the owner said they left an hour before I arrived but I am not convinced with the amount of gas in the home. Just Beware and try to visit before you commit.

Crooked Lake Cottage
What a beautiful location and property! We had a nice two day stay at the lake cottage with our dog Joe. Didn't get on the lake with the canoes that were available but nice that they are available. A few updates would be nice to improve a future stay in the cottage. Bath towels and face cloths were more like rags than something you'd use at home. The two recliners in the front room need to be replaced because they are broken. We also wondered why there was a big screen tv in the room overlooking the lake? It totally ruins the view. The cleaning expected before leaving in the morning is unreasonable. I realize they are trying to keep the cost down but when you're getting up early to leave you don't want to have to worry about vacuuming and doing the laundry. The washing machine took so long that we never had a chance to finish the load. The bed was comfortable and all in all our stay was wonderful and I'd stay again!

Pretty Setting right on the Lake.
I have always had fantastic experiences with VRBO. Sorry this one had multiple issues, from check in, the key in the lockbox did not work so we were trying to reach the owner but almost no cell service, so this took a while, we contacted the next door neighbor for help , the water pressure being a big problem, especially on checkout day. The cleaning is very extensive, woke up early to Wash all the sheets! Yes we were asked to launder the sheets, but the water pressure was so slow it took 2 hours for one load, and even had to remove them from the dryer before they were dry to leave by our 11:00 check out. In the meantime we couldn’t shower, wash the dishes or flush toilets. This was a bad ending, Everyone was frustrated . The bathroom door upstairs did not shut tight so we braced a chair in front of the bathroom door which didn’t really work out, The slats at the top of the stairs are at least a foot apart, any child could fall straight down the stairs. I would not stay at this property again. Way too much cleaning, even had to vacuum and clean toilets, showers and sinks. Sorry, charge more for a cleaning fee, Way too much to do when you are trying to pack and leave. Lastly, only one couch in the Adult Living Room, Not enough seating !! I hate being negative but if I had known any of these issues I would have rented somewhere else.

Went for a nice weekend and ended up being the cleaning crew
Over all we had a nice weekend but that was more because of the family and friends than the cabin. The cabin is nice on the outside but very dated on the inside. It does look like they have started some remodeling as two of the bedroom were nice. We had black water in one of the toilets the first night we were there. The property owner showed up to do "yardwork" on Saturday but it felt invasive and more like we were being spied on. It would be my thought that if you rent a place out you should trust the people that you are renting to and you should respect their privacy and not show up to do things that could have been taken care of during the week before or after they were there. You also pay a cleaning fee but then are expected to vacuum (it even says to vacuum the window sills), mop, wash and dry all the bedding and towels, clean the bathrooms with Lime-A-Way, clean the toilets, etc. There is a huge list of things that you are expected to clean before you leave. We have rented many places through VRBO over the years and we have never been expected to do what was required at this place. It would be my suggestion that they either don't charge a cleaning fee, since we did all the cleaning, or raise the cleaning fee price and reduce the expectations of your guests who came to enjoy a nice weekend and definitely did not come to be the cleaning crew.

We were down for our daughters softball game at Trine University. We loved our stay here, the owners are wonderful, it is in close proximity to town as well as Trine University. There was plenty of room for those of us who stayed as well as entertaining family and friends who came down to watch.

Host profile image
Hi, I am Steve Just, Mechanical Engineer from Purdue University. I was born, raised, and my family lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana. My wife, Amy, and I have 3 children (triplets) age 25 now. We have been married for 30 years and dated in high school and through college. We have a miniature schnauzer named Lucy Lick’ems. Our children love to play at the lake cottage and have for years ever since they were 1 years of age. I pride myself on communicating and answering yours and your family’s questions as soon as possible. We are the owners, so you are not working though a 3rd party. Please feel free to call me anytime. There are so many properties I am sure you have looked at on line, so let me help you where I can. I am sure your family will appreciate you taking the time to pull this together, it is not easy. Let me help you by making this process as easy as possible. Thanks, Steve Just.

Why they chose this property

We choose this property, because the land is spacious with most lake fronts having 75 feet frontage, so you have more privacy then cottages that are spaced closer to one another. We love the town of Angola. Not on top of a hill with 70 steps to the lake. Not in a channel. Plenty of parking space. The neighbors are nice, the street is quite, the dead end street is safe for little ones and pets, and the cottage is large enough for a good sized family and friends. Comes with free use of row boat, paddle boat, and canoe to share with cottage next door.

What makes this property unique

I have a person I work directly with to rent pontoon boats.
I love it when persons call me as I think it is important to answer all of your questions on this property , the lake and the surrounding area.
Also, If you live near Angola, I encourage you to drive to our lake cottage and the surrounding areas to shop for the cottage that best fits your families wants to your budget. I usually can arrange to let you in. I encourage you to go and compare , because 4 out of 5 families that visit our cottages in the area end up renting our cottages; as they see it as a good fit and value.
Thanks, Steve
