About this property

Welcome to the SunRay Shire home of SunRay Kelley and Bonnie Howard. We are natural builders and our homes have appeared on MTV Cribs, Home and Garden Channel, in New York Times and Lloyd Kahn’s books Builders of the Pacific Cost and Tiny Homes.
We have hosted many travelers from all over the world in the unique structures on the land. The country quiet is only 10 minutes to the quaint town of Sedro Woolley and 15 minutes to city of Mount Vernon, home to the Lincoln Theatre and many excellent restaurants.
This rugged 9 acre property has walking trails, mountain views, gardens, apple orchard and many examples of handcrafted, sculptural homes and structures.
The Stump House ID#1541586 and Mush Room ID#1541712 are adorable little cold water cabins set in a stand of giant fir and cedar trees. Each cabin overlooks a different trout pond. Each cabin has electricity, cold water sink, tea station and wood fired heat in addition to electric heater November through April. The cabins each have a comfortable double bed. The Stump additional has an easy chair that fold out into a small single bed to accomodate a child or third guest. Bring your rain boots fall through spring as the trails get wet and muddy.
Guests are welcome to use and socialize in the beautiful outdoor kitchen located in the apple orchard. The cabins share an outdoor, composting toilet and outdoor shower house. The rustic nature of our property is not for everyone but those who are looking to unplug, reconnect with nature and enjoy whimsical creations will not be disappointed. If you have mobility issues our property is not a good choice for you as the parking area is at least a 100 yards away from the cabins and requires a walk down an earthen trail.
We are blessed to live in the forest on Cultus Mountain in North Western Washington. The trees, mountains, clean water, earth and air nourish us body and soul. Come breathe, relax and walk in the beauty of nature. Blessings to all from SunRay and Bonnie!

FYI: November to April wood fire is required in addition to the electric heat to keep the cabins warm and cozy. Wood fire heat takes time to start and to heat the cabin. To make your winter stay warm and comfortable good communication with us about your arrival time is essential!
Let us know your ETA, at least by the morning of your arrival, so we can schedule a fire starter for your cabin. Please update us if your plans change and confirm your arrival time when your GPS says you are 60 minutes away to have your fire lit and cabin cozy warm for your arrival.
Because guests are so frequently late we do not start your fire until you have messaged confirming your gps time of arrival when you are an hour away.

Wonderful place

We had a great time exploring the property, cooking in the outdoor kitchen, and hanging out in the woods. Bonnie was a great host, generous and kind. This place is a hidden treasure, so genuinely magical and earthy. You might want to bring a headlamp for getting around in the woods, if you are staying in the Mush Room.

Amazing rustic experience

This was the cutest little cabin. Definitely just for 2. I didn't read the description well and packed way more then i needed. The room doesn't have any kitchen, every thing is inbthebshared kitchen up the hill so keep this in mind while packing. It was beautiful and serene. Id Definitely stay here again.

delightful getaway

We had a wonderful time at Sunray Shire! The Mushroom cabin was a cozy retreat, with a big wood stove and a comfy bed. We loved waking up under the glass dome and seeing the light come through the forest, and falling asleep to the sound of the waterfall. Lots of hiking/biking nearby, and it's fun to wander the property (so many whimsical creations). The outdoor kitchen had everything we needed to make delicious meals and we enjoyed crossing paths with the other guests while cooking. Bonnie (the host) is lovely and made sure we had everything we needed!

Magical!

Beautiful property nestled amongst a peaceful lovely forested property in Sedro Woolley. Perfect communication- we were greeted warmly by Bonnie and her son -The Mush Room was so very charming, warm with a comfortable bed. Awesome outdoor hot shower, great paths around the property for walk abouts. Rubio, the sweet orange cat moved in with us, took a hike with us and curled up and and slept with us all night. We foraged for apples in their forest and now I have a freezer full of delicious applesauce from Sunray Shire to share and enjoy this winter that will remind us this perfect little getaway we had only 1 1/2 hours from Seattle. Planning to return. Definitely recommend! Thank you, Bonnie!

Birthday get away

This was the perfect getaway for my 63rd birthday with my husband. We wanted something different to do and enjoyed every thing about or weekend from the hike to the waterfalls, outdoor kitchen, outdoor bathrooms and showers and the campfire evening. Would recommend to anyone who want something different and gets you back to nature.

We rented the Mushroom House and the Stump House, and we (ages 11-80) had a magical adventure. The property is gorgeous and filled with surprising and delightful structures.

Magical Forest Hideaway

My sister and I stayed for a night while I was in the area visiting her. It was everything I hoped for and more. I’ve missed the area since I moved away many years ago so being in a place in the middle of a forest was perfect. Rubio, the orange cat came and loved on us for a bit which made it even better. I loved the whole experience. My knees were not happy with me from all the traveling I’d been doing which made making the walk to the room from the car as well as to the toilet challenging, but I was determined to stay here and I’d do it again. Anyone with mobility issues, though, may want to consider if they can handle the trails that go up and down hills both ways.

Nothing short of magical

Staying in a Dream

My visit was exactly as I had hoped. The structures, people, animals, and area were marvelous. I had plenty of privacy in the little mushroom but I also felt welcomed by others on the property. The cats were great company.

The most magical gnome life

Our stay at Sunray's was exactly what we'd hoped for! The property is beautiful and inspiring, the cottage was perfectly magical, and Bonnie and Sunray were great hosts. The outdoor kitchen and showers were both really well put-together, stocked with the essentials, and well maintained. We'll definitely be coming back!

The best little

My boyfriend and I stayed during the tulip festival and desperately needed an escape from the city. The little house is so peaceful and the rest of the property is calming and fun to explore. Magical wonderland beyond dreams

Why they chose this property

My property is part of my Grandfather Janicki's original homestead. Grandma and Grandpa were Polish immigrants. My Mother moved with Grandpa and Grandma to Western Washington from Chicago in 1920. She was the oldest of 10 children and was the first one in her family to speak English. The old growth cedar trees had been logged from the property when my Grandfather bought the land. I grew up on Cultus Mountain playing on those big old growth stumps, climbing trees and building forts in the woods. I never lost my love of doing those things.
