About this property

Stunning shorefront on Somes Sound with expansive deck, fire pit, Acadia trails

This extraordinary, shorefront, custom-designed home in the historic Hall Quarry area of Mount Desert Island, made with indigenous materials fits gracefully into the shoreline of Acadia National Park against which it abuts and Acadia Mountain on which it is perched below. With stunning views of Somes Sound from nearly every room, take in the parade of handsome cruising yachts and racing sailboats while relaxing by the fire or sitting on the expansive deck. This well-designed and light-filled home features open beams supported by mountain cedars and an open layout with a gourmet kitchen. With three floors of living space, this special home offers the utmost privacy without compromising space in which to gather and entertain. Guests to Acadia Lodge will surely enjoy the views from any one of many spots - the sunny deck facing the Sound, the north or south side porch, or the outdoor patio with a fire pit sheltered under a cliff. And when it's time to venture away from the house, follow the granite steps to a private dock with two moorings. National Park hiking trails can also be reached directly from this property and swimming from Echo Lake's beach, ledges or Ike's Point is just a few minutes away by car. All in all, with so much of the national park nearby and is within 10 to 20 minutes from the villages of Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor, Acadia Lodge offers the peaceful benefits of the "quiet side" without giving up convenience to the Park or to the shopping and dining each village offers.

MAIN FLOOR: Enter at ground level to the main living space with views of Somes Sound from nearly every vantage point. The high-end Kitchen with stainless steel appliances and island seating opens to the Living and Dining Area with a dining table for 8, access to the covered deck with furnishings on the north side, and access to the open deck on the south side. Adding to the charm and comfort of this space are comfortable sofas, a desk area if needed, a gas-fired stove, and a baby grand piano overlooking the Sound! A half bathroom completes the first floor.

UPPER LEVEL: A fabulous and spacious Master Suite featuring a King bed, a sitting area with a flat-screen TV, a queen sleeper sofa, and a large private Bathroom with a claw-foot tub and separate shower. And of course, this upper level enjoys the same wonderful views of Somes Sound.

LOWER LEVEL: Two bedrooms, each with a Queen bed and one with a mounted flat-screen TV enjoy their own views of Somes Sound and share a full Bathroom with a combined tub and shower.

OUTDOOR SPACES: Expansive cedar deck with furnishings overlooking Somes Sound accessible from both the north and south side covered porch areas. Outdoor patio with fire pit. Screened-in, cliff-facing, outdoor shower.

EXTRAS: Private dock, two moorings, kayaks, and rowing skiff.

Acadia visit

Hiking is great - trails for all abilities. Loved being on the west side. Quieter but still great access to restaurants and trails. Visiting Bar Harbor on non cruise boat days worked very well.

Wonderful week

We had a lovely week at Acadia Lodge. The house is incredibly comfortable, well-stocked, and conveniently located to the west side trails. There are gorgeous views from the main floor and the upstairs bedroom suite. We would definitely return.

Nice location for long walks

This house is a little unusual. It has a grand piano in the middle of the eating area. The kitchen table only seats 4 comfortably. Also the firepit is in an unusual spot and I am not sure how to sit around it. The owner was very nice and worked with me on our dates. The house is located in a beautiful area with lots of views and places for long walks. There are wonderful views from the deck. We had a nice time and plenty of room for the 4 of us.

Fantastic stay in this special place

We had a great stay at Acadia Lodge. We have stayed in Bar Harbor before but wanted something quieter this time and on the water and honestly not sure how you can do better than this special place. The location on Somes Sound can’t be beat. I could have spent every day on the front porch alone and been happy, the view is that spectacular. The house furnishings are beautiful and had everything we needed for our stay. Easy drive to downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We saw sunrise at the summit of Cadillac Mountain, explored Bar Harbor and Acadia including hiking the Bubbles Divide Trail but the highlight was seeing a bald eagle, a porcupine and we think pilot whales all from this property. Hope to make it back one day!

Peaceful Vacation Home

We had a wonderful visit to Maine on our family vacation. We had 5 adults, and the property was so lovely. My favorite sitting area is on the porch drinking coffee overlooking the Sound in the morning. The house was in a convenient area - less than 10 minutes from SW Harbor, 20 minutes to Bar Harbor, and 7 minutes from the local grocery store. Fresh flowers in the planters gave the house a "home" feel. I loved reading my book in the lounge chair just as much as the coffee at sunrise. We didn't use the kayaks due to the steep climb down to the dock, and instead booked a kayak excursion for the west part of the island. Several things we did while we were there - we went on the whale watch tour - amazing! We went to the top of Cadillac mountain for a picnic at sunset - beautiful! We reserved e-bikes and rode all over the carriage roads in Acadia - fun! And, the kayak tour I mentioned got us close to seals and the quiet coastline of the west island. Overall a wonderful family vacation!

Lovely secluded home !

Rating Details: The property manager was adequately helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Wonderful location , charming , with a great view .clean and all amenities listed were provided. Had difficulty with booking in that $500 extra was charged to my credit card than was stated by the agent . The agency also gave the wrong video instructions to open the door, which was very frustrating . The local agent came as soon as she could to assist with the lock situation and she was extremely helpful and was able to offer an amenity to make up for the lost time . I highly recommend this property and the local agent was outstanding .But The national agency employees need some training !

Perfect spot nestled by Somes Sound

This property was an amazing spot near Acadia. Convenient to towns nearby and many trails we wanted to hike. The house itself was very comfortable and the deck was a wonderful spot to sit and have coffee or cocktails. Enjoyed the fire pit in the evening. Good communication with the property manager. Thank you so much for sharing this spot with us!

Great location, beautiful views

This is a nice house right on the water. Beautiful views over the water. It was nice to watch the boats go by every day. The house required some extra cleaning which the owner took care of quickly. It is also a great location for exploring Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was happy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The entrance code did not work, I called the Turnkey people, I was told someone would be out within 1/2 hour. I received a phone call from one of the Turnkey people after about 1/2 hour. They gave me a new code which worked. Presumably, they could have checked this system before we arrived so we would not have to wonder how this would be resolved after having driven for 5 hours. There were a number of interactions regarding where our trash should go, some from a central office and some from a local office, I guess. There was Zero coordination between the TurnKey people and what I was told was repeatedly confusing or inaccurate. The prior tenant had left smelly garbage in a closet in the garage - this house had not been adequately cleaned after the last tenant. The dishwasher is in poor condition with the bottom rack repeatedly coming off the railing and tipping over when filled.

Slice of heaven on Somes Sound

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: It would be difficult to beat this beautiful location; very quiet with a gorgeous view from the property. The home was comfortable and provided two kayaks and a skiff to enjoy on the water, though the walk down from the home to the water was a little difficult, especially if the rocks are wet.

Truly remarkable home deserving of better property management.

Rating Details: The property manager was somewhat unhelpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The home is splendid, as described. Biggest issue was getting in - the code given was NOT the correct code, compounded by cell signal being very sketchy at the house and initial contact seeming irritated by our call. Ending up using key in Realtor’s lockbox to gain access. Once inside had to call again to get correct password for WiFi access. They came out next morning and said we were not entering the Schlage door code correctly but reprogrammed it to different code - must’ve gotten smarter because we had no problem using the new (correct!) code... Only other complaints: flannel sheets in master bed were too warm in upstairs bedroom with no AC, one wash cloth in master bath for 4 night stay, and zero hot water pressure in master shower if hot water used in lower level.

Great house, Turnkey irresponsible

Rating Details: The property manager was very unhelpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: What a wonderful house to stay at in Acadia. I am just sad that our trip was marred by a cluster of problems, not the least of which was lack of responsiveness from Turnkey. When we got to the house the entry code provided did not work. I tried to call the helpline- I got a reply 18 HOURS LATER. Fortunately the caretaker came by and let us in the property. One of the two full baths was not usable. We contacted Turnkey about this as well. A plumber was sent, and they tore up the bathroom and left it a mess. Repairs were not made, and so we were unable to use the bathroom for our entire stay. The house is in a beautiful location on Somes Sound. A short walk down a granite staircase takes you to a dock. The home has a nice layout, and is overall comfortable and well appointed. It is close to Southwest Harbor which has a fair number of yummy restaurants, a surprisingly well stocked grocery, easy harbor rentals of boats and kayaks. Wildlife is abundant around the house, and there is a trail leading up to Acadia mtn. You are also close to Echo Lake. Wifi is limited to about three devices, so we had to jockey around on our devices as there were six of at the house. I'd recommend staying here, but would try to rent it outside of Turnkey.

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We stayed here early season - mid April - so it was chilly. But the place is warm, the location ideal, very private, very quiet. The house is really well done inside with absolutely everything you need.Highly recommend. Close to lots of hiking trails.

Beautiful Home Facing Somes Sound, MDI

The owners built a beautiful home facing directly toward Somes Sound on Mount Desert Island. Bill, the owner, was helpful and helped us with information and ideas for the week, and quickly resolved one minor issue we had. The home is secluded and private with a master bedroom & bath on the top floor. The main floor has a nice kitchen, dining table, bathroom, and sitting area all in an open concept layout. The bottom floor has two bedrooms and full bath. The three best aspects: Sitting on the covered porch looking over the water; walking down the path to the water to access a floating dock on Somes Sound (we rented a motorboat for the week); and an easy convenient location on MDI to get to all the hiking, parks, and Acadia Natl. Park. The only negative is limited Internet access. We could view websites and get email but there was not enough access for streaming Netflix or any videos. But we brought lots of books, played cards, and were perfectly happy. Finally, we also saw ospreys and even a bald eagle right while relaxing on the porch. Pretty nice! Very nice and relaxing home for a wonderful MDI vacation.

A Wonderful Wedding Gift

Both of our children got married in 2016 and we came up with the best wedding gift for them. Thanks to the Patten's Place, we all got to spend a wonderful week together as a new family. The Patten's hospitality and willingness to open up their home, made us feel truly at home. Bill communicated often, was a wealth of information about things to do, restaurants to visit and special tips on how to beat the crowds. Our days were spent enjoying the kayaks, the dock, bonfires, and hiking that were all available onsite. I will never forget seeing the Milky Way, something I haven't seen since I was in college in the U.P. of Michigan. When we weren't enjoying our home away from home, we were discovering the beauty of Acadia and the uniqueness of the towns near by. We couldn't have picked a better place, or a better wedding gift for our kids. I would recommend the Patten's home without hesitation.

Iconic Down East Maine

Our group of 6 stayed here for one week in July 2016. I can only confirm everything that has been said about this beautiful home. While Acadia and Bar Harbor are things to experience, of course, the record crowds and traffic gridlock in places made us very glad we were able to return to this very secluded home each day. We often awoke to the sound of loons, watched eagles and even had some white tale deer visit. It was always enjoyable to watch the lobster men and women work their traps in front of the home and witness the beautiful sail boats go by. We enjoyed evening campfires and you have a kayak for your use on the sound. Another bonus is that you are very close to activities on the quiet side like hiking, swimming, golf, boat trips out of Bass or Southwest Harbor to name a few. For those seeking a quiet relaxing place, but close enough for you to do your "Maine" thing, you could not find a better place.

Lovely home in a beautiful setting.

Lovely place for a family of 5. Very quiet setting, right on Somes Sound with a private dock. Well maintained house with lots of room and openplan ground floor. Loads to do in the area - biking, hiking, kayaking, swimming in Echo Lake and SouthWest harbor a great town for lobster shacks and eating / drinking.

Truly memorable vacation

We stayed at Acadia Lodge for just over two weeks this summer and had a fabulous time. The house is even better than the photos suggest - which sadly is not always the case given the ubiquity of photoshop et al! The location is sublime - easy access to everything MDI has to offer whilst maintaining a sense of tranquillity afforded by the very private setting. We are a family of four (couple plus boys 7 & 9) and found the facilities and space excellent - indeed the house could easily accommodate a larger family. The owners were a delight to deal with. We would certainly recommend a vacation here unreservedly.

A True Get Away

Floating down the drive to Acadia lodge takes your breath away. It's location on Somes Sound is private, tranquil and inviting. The home has everything you could want in a Maine retreat: antiques, lots of wood, a fantastic dock, hammock, outside shower...best porch ever for morning coffee and THE VIEW! We hiked nearly everyday on fantastic trails. We kayaked, but mostly we ate our way thru the island, lobster rolls and blueberry pie! The owners are very responsive and the helpful. This is a very special home...you will get a real sense of place and will feel very connected to the island.

Better Than Advertised!

My family of five recently returned from a 7 night vacation at this wonderful property. In our opinion, it was much better than advertised and the gentleman/property owner we dealt with was very cordial and easy to work with. We loved the location and the privacy it afforded us, yet the property is a very easy driving distance to all parts of MDI, including Bar Harbor. It borders the National Park on one side, and granite cliffs/Somes Sound on others, with a dock on the sound for boating/kayaking or fishing. We hiked the Acadia Mountain Trail and the Beech Mountain Cliffs Trail overlooking Echo Lake and really enjoyed both hikes. The trail-heads for both are only a 3 or 4 minute drive from the property. We enjoyed all that the island had to offer but looked forward to returning to the privacy and tranquility of this property every evening. Such a scenic and peaceful location. The home is well maintained and has high-end appliances in the well-stocked kitchen. I rent homes every year in various parts of the world for our family vacations and I always do considerable research to make sure I choose a property that is maybe a little unique, suits our needs and is well-maintained. This home fit the bill and certainly did not disappoint in any way. We loved it!
