About this property

ELEGANT AND RELAXING BEACH GETAWAY, STEPS FROM THE WATER

Welcome to our charming, art-filled four-bedroom home in Lower New London, an eight minute walk to the beach. This 1930 Dutch Colonial is uniquely situated within walking distance of three bodies of water: we are 200 yards from Alewife Cove, which flows out to the sea and can be explored with a kayak; two and a half blocks from the Thames River, where you can stroll along the shore and to the lighthouse dated 1761 (the first built on Long Island Sound); and four blocks from the immensely popular Ocean Beach Park, with its marvelous white-sand beach, boardwalk, waterslide, Olympic-size swimming pool, amusement park rides, diner/gift shop, miniature golf, nightly concerts, and arcade. Or walk to the neighborhood grocery store, colorful local hangout, the Egg Yolk Café, or the historic Lighthouse Inn.

This vintage home is loaded with original molding and hardwood floors throughout. The first floor has a living room, dining room, kitchen, half bath, and sunroom/office for those who may still need to work while away. There is also a recently tuned piano and stereo. Upstairs is a full bath and four bedrooms (one queen, one full, and two twins). Although it does not have central air conditioning, it has AC units in three of the bedrooms and wonderful ocean breezes. The house sleeps six and is fully equipped with linens, towels, pots and pans, utensils, and dishes as well as a coffee maker, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, high chair, and gas range. There is a WiFi-enabled Smart TV, as well as numerous novels and children’s books, board games, beach towels/chairs/toys/umbrella, and a cooler. There is a washer/dryer and iron/ironing board in the basement. The back garden is set up with wicker furniture and a Weber barbecue. Note: We do not have a pool on the property; there is a public pool down at Ocean Beach Park.

A parking pass for Ocean Beach Park is included with the rental.

Note: After each guest's visit, our home is thoroughly restocked, cleaned, and sanitized by a professional cleaning service.

Welcome to the Dutch House!

Comfortable rental

The house was uncluttered, tastefully decorated and well supplied. The beds were great. The host was very responsive. It was great to have the drive in pass to Ocean Beach Park. The swimming pool and waterslides there, however, are extra money per person. Harkness State Park is beautiful for picnicking , but no swimming is allowed. For a day at the beach Waterford beach is the best, but it’s expensive on the weekends.

Elegant and comfortable

For those who are tired of kitsch and cheap furnishings, 8 Greenway is an elegant respite from the City. A home that feels both new and shiny as well as lived-in and comfortable. this VRBO property is a stellar example of a vacation home that provides a truly sophisticated welcome mat. A backyard with Weber grill offers out-door relaxation; and bedrooms with AC (all but one) allows for cool rest. A pass to nearby Ocean Beach along with beach chairs and towels completes a full-rounded stay.

Perfect beach get-away!

My family and I rented this property for 2 weeks in July. I utilized the fabulous office space for those two weeks while my teenagers hung out at Ocean Beach Park, just a few blocks away. The house was perfect for our extended stay, and had everything we could/would need. Paper supplies, linens, towels, detergent, etc. The neighbors are super friendly, and the neighborhood is nice and quiet. Our check-in process was very easy, utilizing the door code for entry to the home. Although the downstairs is not air conditioned, the cross breeze always kept the downstairs cool. I would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a getaway next to the beach!

Exactly as described.

We had a great time here. It was our jumping off point to a variety of places relatively close by. The beach pass saved some $$, too. If you are looking for relaxing, avoid the beach on the weekend! The house was exactly as described. It has everything you'll need except groceries. Pay attention to the details. The day we arrived it was in the mid 90's. The house was hot - not a surprise, though. The description clearly indicates the A/C situation so no-one should be complaining about that. Definitely recommend!

End of Summer Getaway

The house was a good size, close enough to the beach. The beach pass for the car was a big plus. Our overall experience was enjoyable. The house was stocked with everything you may need. The owner checked in to make sure our stay was going smoothly.

Quiet House close to Beach

We loved the house. It cozy and quiet and nicely decorated. The 4 bedrooms are good size. Great water pressure in the shower and no hot water issues with six people showering. Kitchen is great for cooking. Owner was super responsive but we had no real problems. The beach parking pass that comes with the house is one of the best features. We were able to go to Ocean Beach park ( 2 minute drive or 10 minute walk) several times even for short periods.

Excellent Vacation House!

We truly enjoyed the house and its convenient location near the beaches, the Book Barn, and great restaurants. Owner was very responsive to questions. A bit more information in the binder about where things were stored (toilet paper, soap, etc.) would have been helpful. Kitchen mostly well-stocked, although a few more cooking utensils would be great. More towels also. But these were minor inconveniences and do not diminish the 5 star score. Thinking of renting the same house again next summer! Thank you!

Beautiful, charming house - located close to the beach - exactly as described

Everything that the owner has listed in the description rung true. The location was great, the house was charming and clean, and the descriptions of the area were spot on. The parking pass and walk on passes were extremely useful and helped save a little bit of money on beach costs. While we didn't utilize all of the house's amenities (the provided beach toys and cooler, the grill and outside area, or the board games and numerous books), it was great to know that so much was provided and was available to us if we wanted. All four of the beds have a memory foam topper and are quite comfortable. There is also a high quality stereo system in the house to hook up to your phone/laptop to play some music in the house while you are there. The owner was very professional and had a binder with instructions and a list of various things to do around the area. She actually reached out on the evening of our arrival to check in and ensure that everything went smoothly with check in, and followed up with us throughout our stay. Our only issue was resolved before the midpoint of our stay, and that was a lack of air conditioning in the house. I had booked the house pretty impulsively since our vacation time off was coming up soon, and I did not check to see whether the place had AC (so it really is my fault for not finding out beforehand). However, the owner was able to have air conditioning units installed in the bedroom windows pretty quickly, and the rest of our stay was much cooler! She really went the extra mile to ensure that we had an enjoyable visit. I would be more than willing to rent from the owner again. We also left some ice cream sandwiches and some lemon ices in the freezer, so whoever was there after us, enjoy! Thank you Susan!

New London - Beach Paradise

My partner and I loved this property. The house was clean and well stocked with everything you’d expect in a home rental (cooking oils, coffee, spices, condiments, soap, etc) and many other things we were delighted to discover (beach chairs, towels, a small bottle of champagne that was gifted, a beautiful piano). The backyard was nice and shady and perfect for grilling. The neighborhood was quiet and safe. We were able to walk to Oceanside beach in under ten minutes. There’s a brunch place (called The Yolk) in walking distance as well. New London is full of little secret beach spots and fun places to explore. Overall I would absolutely recommend this property to friends and family and if we are in the area again, we will definitely book this amazing home.

Great family house but NO air conditioning

Note: NO AC. Mea culpa for not explicitly checking, but worth noting that this house does not benefit from coastal breezes. The house never went below 78 our entire trip and hit 84 (and humid) at its worst, even with all windows open and the woefully inadequate personal fans running. Everyone in my group was miserable and struggled sleeping and I feel embarrassed that I ruined their long weekend. Such a shame because the house is clean, roomy, charming, and otherwise well-appointed with all the essentials. Owner noted she’s been comfortable, but she also hasn’t owned the house through a scorching July and August yet. Total oversight.

About the host

My husband Bolton and I both grew up on the Monterey Peninsula, a resort area on the Pacific Ocean in California, and we are both museum professionals. I am an independent curator and art historian organizing exhibitions and writing catalogues for various museums. Bolton is working remotely for a museum as a curator of 20th century and contemporary American art. We have two college age sons.

Why they chose this property

We researched places on the Connecticut coast and found New London to be amazingly reminiscent of Monterey when we were growing up. We love the sea and wanted to be near it. But we didn't want to live in a sleepy resort town; we wanted something that felt alive and with an active art scene. Quirky New London is the perfect place for us.

What makes this property unique

We chose the "Dutch House," as we affectionately call it, because it is situated in Lower New London in an unusual spot close to a lot of water: Alewife Cove, the Thames River, and Ocean Beach on Long Island Sound. As an older New England home It has a great deal of charm. It is a cozy home and the neighbors are all amazingly friendly.
