Great Home that is Close to Exceptional!
My group of 16 adults really enjoyed our stay at Dunkerron House and the home and property are really fantastic and the property manager is wonderful. There are a few things that could make this home really exceptional with just a little effort and money. Towel bars and shower/bath shelves or soap dishes are missing and as well as a shelf of some kind in the different bathrooms. The kitchen is quite nice, however, the stove and sink are separated by a counter that really makes for a lot of extra running. A second coffee maker in the kitchen is also a must for large groups and while it is pretty well equipped, there could be a few more utensil items. These right now are all minor things that don't hinder the stay, but their addition would really enhance an already excellent accommodation. The grounds are beautiful and the location (about 1.5 miles from Kenmare) are wonderful. The home manager is really good and willing to to do whatever she can to make your stay top notch. I would definitely not hesitate bringing a group back to this home.

Charming escape in the Irish countryside
Our group of 14 ages 17-85 had a fantastic time at Dunkerron House. Great location with accessibility to the Kenmare, the Beara, Dingle and Iveragh peninsulas as well as Kinsale. Kenmare is a charming little village with shopping, grocery stores and good restaurants just 10 minutes away. The property of Dunkerron is gorgeous with vibrant flowers, walking trails and an old castle ruin. Sandy was terrific with communications and helpful hints. Would highly recommend this as a home away from home!

Fabulous historic manor in a peaceful setting
Our family with 12 people really enjoyed this spacious home and property. All the amenities worked great, the home was comfortable, and the property, complete with castle ruins, was great to explore. We enjoyed walks down to the river and daily road trips to see the many surrounding attractions. Sandy the property manager was fabulous and provided wonderful hospitality. I only wish we had booked this for a longer stay!

Perfect for Family Get Together
This large 19th Century home which had been modernized over the years was a prefect setting for our family gathering of 10 adults and an infant. The bedrooms were large and comfortable. We loved the open fires in the living rooms and there was ample turf and wood to have a nice fire burning in the hearth whenever we wanted. The large formal dining room was perfect for our catered dinner (shout out to Truffle Honey!). The grounds are secluded and the 10 minute walk to the bay shore is just zen. Communications during our stay were excellent. Sandy was very responsive to the few requests we had. Our one minor disappointment was that the Games Room was under re-construction so was not available. Otherwise, Dunkerron House ticked all the boxes and was the perfect setting for our family gathering. Highly recommend!

Spacious and comfortable
We had a family trip with 9 adults and 4 children under 6. The home was very spacious and allowed enough bedrooms with en-suite baths to make everyone comfortable. We enjoyed our walks to the bay. This home is ideal for a large group

Book this place immediately!
This property and home was absolutely spectacular. We felt like royalty. Sandy was phenomenal! So kind and helpful and available for anything we needed. I truly wish I could live here and never leave. The home is fantastic, huge and perfect for a large family. We joked about having my wedding here and if we weren’t from California I definitely would have wanted it here. Choose to stay here over anywhere else and you will thank me later.

Family Getaway
We had a lovely stay at Dunkerron. The accommodations were beautiful, and we felt like royalty. The garden is spectacular with all the flowers in bloom. We had fires in the evening and enjoyed every room. The walk to the water is a good hike but nice to be able to enjoy the property. Sandy also said we could drive down if we wanted to take a picnic. Thanks for sharing the beautiful historic home with us!

Trip of a lifetime
My family of 14 gathered in Kenmare at this beautiful estate to share time where their dad was raised. The Dunkerron property was magnificent and we enjoyed walks, fireside gatherings, and exploring the beauty of Kerry together! Sandy, the property manager, was so helpful and informative. We can’t wait to return!

I saw this property on VRBO while searching for a holiday venue for a family of 15 who had not been altogether since July 2019. It seemed expensive & I was worried about mixed weather but I could not settle for anything less, having seen it. And it was worth every penny & the sun shone… & shone. The setting is breathtaking - with the pale moon rising above the blue mountain nightly, just for us. The house is spectacular & spacious, & the decor meant that even the 3 teenagers were keen to maintain high standards. A selection of the paintings was copied by the children- the pig in the kitchen being the most popular ! We swam in rivers, lakes & sea ( loved Derrynane). We ate at The Boathouse, the mobile Fish & Chip Bar, No35 & Poffs . We had meals on the terrace , including the barbecue. It wa a memorable week - a delayed 70th birthday combined with a 50th wedding anniversary celebrated daily, & we loved every minute! Thank you Moyà & Kathy. 💕☘️💕

Relaxing Luxury
Fantastic. We felt pampered and comfortable while enjoying a beautiful house, extensive gardens and walking trails. Bedrooms were spacious with great beds. Bathrooms immaculate. The entire house was very well maintained and very cozy with the multiple fireplaces complete with peat and wood supply. And the location is superb ! Would love to return someday. Thanks for a great week !

Perfect Week
My family and friends gathered in Ireland to celebrate my birthday and enjoy SW Ireland. This authentic, historic property is perfect for a large group, having plenty of room to gather the whole group, but smaller more intimate space as well. And, although old, the property has all the modern convenience you need. The owner and property management were great to work with. This property, with its beautiful garden, and stunning waterfront was a part of my very special birthday experince in gorgeous Ireland.

Irish Experience
Fifteen of us ages 4 to 73 had the most memorable experience at this very spacious manor. From check-in to check-out, Kathy was most accommodating and so very approachable. I typically do not write reviews but this is an exception. Almost a mystical experiece.

Great property near Kenmare
We had a 16 person family get together on the Dunkerron Estate and it was tremendous! The house is very spacious and charming and the property was wonderful. The wooded estate provided for a lot of privacy and nice, short hikes....especially to the castle and dock on Kenmare Bay. Kathy and Patrick, the property managers, were fantastic! They were incredibly helpful and responsive. They recommended pubs, restaurants, taxi drivers, and even told us about a local Hurling match between the boys from Kenmare and Kilgarvin....we were sorry to see the Kenmare lads lose but it was a lot of fun. It was may have been the cultural highlight to our trip. Dunkerron is an ideal place for a large group vacation. Lots of wonderful memories!

Wonderful family vacation spot!
This property was an ideal spot to enjoy a family vacation. There were nine of us enjoying a three generation gathering. The bedrooms are nice and it was great to have private bathrooms. There is plenty of spaces to enjoy time together. My favorite was the sunroom but others loved sitting in front of the fire or playing ping pong in the game room. The grounds are amazing and the kids loved the castle ruins and we all enjoyed our walks down to the water. It was a great location for exploring the Ring of Kerry and Kenmare is a charming town with nice stores and good restaurants. We all loved our stay!

Lovely home and property. Photo on website is misleading, as it makes it look like you have a view of kenmare bay from the home. It was not made clear to us that the cost for gas and electric would be ADDITIONAL to the cost we paid for the home rental. Locking the front door is a challenge. It took us two days to figure it out, so we went in and out of a side door until we were able to solve it! Nice garden area and great to have access to it. Enjoyed hiking on the property and the easy access to downtown Kenmare, Ring of Kerry and more.

Absolutely blown away with our experience!
Our large family were on vacation celebrating our (grand)parent's 50th wedding anniversary. We were planning day trips all around the "Ring of Kerry" for 10 days and we needed a place to comfortably accommodate our family with enough room to relax on down days from travel. When we arrived at Dunkarron House our whole family was beyond excited about the property. The pictures and descriptions do not do it justice by far! Some highlights of what we loved about Dunkarron House: Bedrooms of different sizes for everyone with multiple master suites, plenty of bathrooms, large modern kitchen, large dining room with fireplace, game room with ping pong and pool table, sun room with TV & DVD, bar room with fridge (for our Guiness), multiple living room areas with fireplace(s) to relax, high-speed WiFi, laundry room with washer/dryer, historic castle ruins on the property, river-front picnic area (short walk from house), short distance to Kenmare (with great restaurants, pubs, shops). The owner and property managers were a great pleasure to meet and they made our experience extremely enjoyable. Any questions we had were promptly attended to. I highly recommend this property to anyone who wants to get away and relax and experience the Ring of Kerry from a convenient location. I personally would definitely return!

About the host

Host profile image
Dunkerron was owned by my Mum who ran it as a guesthouse for many years. It was host to many gueats over the years, all of which went home with great memories. My Mum still gets letters from all over the world from the friends she made when she ran it. After major damage during a storm five years ago we made the decision to renovate the house so that it could once again be enjoyed. As I live in Limerick it was not an option for me to open Dunkerron as a guesthouse again so we made the decision to offer it to families and groups of friends on a self catering basis.

Why they chose this property

There is nowhere like Dunkerron. The house was built overlooking the ruins of Dunkerron castle, which was destroyed by it's occupants (the O'Sullivan Mór clan) in the mid seventeenth century to avoid its capture by Oliver Cromwell and his army. It is a unique property on 60 acres bordering Kenmare Bay. There is a lovely walk through the woodlands to the shore where the brave can swim when the tide is in. If you are lucky you might meet a deer or two on the way down. There is nowhere more peaceful to relax with friends and family than Dunkerron.

What makes this property unique

The house itself is absolutely unique with great character yet includes all modern comforts. Open log fires, a games room and and the conservatory all contribute to the ambiance of this great house and allows everybody their own bit of space.
