About this property

Spacious Cottage Overlooking Bass Harbor with Sweeping Front Lawn

This historic home in the center of Bass Harbor village offers a way to experience the beauty of Mount Desert Island away from the crowds and tourist buses. Come and enjoy authentic cottage living at a fraction of Bar Harbor prices. This property has a front house, Harbor View Cottage (this listing), and a back house, Bass Harbor Hideaway, which are both available for summer rentals. The houses share a very thick common wall and have separate entrances from the driveway for privacy.

Harbor View Cottage overlooks Bass Harbor, a scenic marina filled with lobster boats. The Cottage offers a view of the harbor from its lawn, living room and two of the bedrooms, including spectacular Maine sunsets.

Harbor View Cottage is spacious, sunlit and comfortable--a quiet, elegant outpost from which to enjoy all that Mt. Desert Island and Acadia have to offer. It features:

• Three bedrooms, plus a finished attic living space. The bedrooms include one with 2 twin beds, a second with 2 twin beds, and a third with 1 king-size bed. Two of the bedrooms overlook Bass Harbor. There are also 4 additional twin beds in the attic.
• There is a full bath on the second floor, and an additional shower/sink/toilet in the finished attic.
• Living room, dining room, eat-in kitchen (full-size appliances).
• Linens and towels are included.
• Washer/dryer and charcoal grill are provided.
• Expansive front yard with plenty of room for kids to run around and explore. Yard includes a fire pit for roasting marshmallows.
• 1 mile from Bass Harbor Head Light.
• 12-minute drive to the nearest Acadia National Park destinations.
• 10-minute drive to shops & restaurants of Southwest Harbor.
• Minutes to Echo Lake, hiking trails, swimming, tennis, boating, golf & fishing.
• Free island shuttle to Bar Harbor and other points of interest. Shuttle stops every hour on the hour, and picks up near the base of the driveway.
• High-speed broadband WIFI at speeds of 300 Mbps downloads / 10 Mbps uploads (typically fast enough to stream). Performance may vary based on the number of devices being used.
• Note: AT&T cell phone service works well in Bass Harbor, but Verizon and T-Mobile offer spotty service. If you have Verizon or T-Mobile, you may want to make park and other reservations ahead of time.

Got a Large Group?
The back house, "Bass Harbor Hideaway," sleeps 4-6 people. For groups of up to 16, you may want to consider renting both houses.

**We are following our routine cleanings between tenants with EPA-registered disinfectants to kill germs on high-touch surfaces such as kitchen counters, appliances, doorknobs, cabinet knobs, light switches, faucets, toilet handles and television remote controls. We also air out the house between renters.**

Our Home Away

Our family has older kids that are very busy. So, we never really know how many people will go. This house is laid out such that it meets our needs no matter who shows!

Family memories

We came from CA, MO, and NE to visit a tavern that has the same name as my late husband, Peter Trout. We wanted to experience the harbor areas, and the Atlantic was right at the end of the driveway. Bass Harbor, Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Cadillac Mountain sunrise, and Southwest Harbor were all close and shopped thru. Quaint cafe's and unique eateries filled us with fabulous seafood.

Wonderful Home and Location

We so enjoyed our stay. We loved the quiet location of the house and the wonderful lawn in evening time looking out to the harbor. The house was great. We actually only had 7 people and there was plenty of room. The house had everything we needed. The very special aspect was that Bobbie provided recommendations of what to do and see. It was so helpful and we followed up on the recommendations daily. Thanks for the lovely stay.

Charming house in Bass Harbor

This year’s family trip was to Acadia. We found a lovely house that accommodated 5 of us in the tiny town of Bass Harbor. Local fish restaurant is directly across the street. Other amenities, grocery store, are located in Southwest Harbor just 10 minutes away and Acadia is about a 30 minute drive to Visitor Center. House is very comfortable, clean, quiet, and kitchen is well stocked. We had a great time.

Stay in Bass Harbor

Had a great stay in Bass Harbor. The house is in a great location and has plenty of space. My young kids loved it especially the attic! Recommend it if you want to stay somewhere with a true small town feel. The owner was super helpful and very responsive to messages. High marks!

Our first trip to Maine!

Our first trip to Maine to visit Bar Harbor and Arcadia. We found this place in Bass Harbor to be the perfect value for the size house we needed. There was a bed for every person! The drive to Arcadia and Bar Harbor wasn’t too bad and the Bass Harbor lighthouse is just up the road from this house! The sunset views from the harbor were fantastic. The house is charming and quaint and everything you would want from a New England cottage! Bobbie was super accommodating and friendly and excellent to work with. Wonderful memories were made here! Highly recommend!

Perfect spot to enjoy coastal Maine

The house and property are spacious. We were 2 adults and 3 kids. There would have been room for 5 more. The house is updated enough to make it cozy and comfortable, but they still kept the old New England charm of the place. We watched the water from the large front yard during sunsets and read books on the porch. Being in Bass Harbor instead of Bar Harbor suites us well. There were no crowds, but the house is close enough to Acadia for plenty of hiking and exploring. There is a great restaurant just across the street (Seafood Ketch) that was the best we tried. There are several other really good spots just a short drive away. I can’t think of a single thing wrong with this property. If we go back to the Acadia area, we will do our best to stay here again!

Spacious and comfortable with view of water

Exceptionally well equipped comfy and cozy yet spacious home. Beds were great, and there were 8 singles and one king, great layout. 2.5 baths with a bathroom on all 3 levels. Airy sun room, plenty of parking. We felt at home the moment we walked in. Games and cable tv, everything in tip top shape (no missing pieces or remotes!) even found chargers and extra batteries in the desk! All-in-all a great place to stay.

A great home in a beautiful place

We loved our vacation in this wonderful, spacious home. It has everything you could need and Bass Harbor and Bernard were fun areas to explore more thoroughly. We already love everything about Mount Desert from decades of visiting. Missing the sunsets and the bell buoys now. Thank you, Bobbie! We hope to return.

Amazing place

My group of 6 friends stayed for a long weekend. The location is amazing right on the water. Bobbie was very communicative. The kitchen is nicely stocked. A small note for larger groups — there are 2 showers and the hot water seemed to run out after 3 people showered, so keep that in mind for scheduling. Overall would recommend 10/10

Fantastic home and location.

The house was large enough to accommodate my family and was stocked with essentials. The check in process had specific directions with GPS coordinates that were key to locating the home. The owners were quick responders which was nice to have for support. I cannot say enough good about the experience. The town of Tremont was exactly what you would expect in Maine, we looked at lobster boats in the harbor from the front yard. Gorgeous!

Great stay for Acadia experience on the quieter side of the island

This was exactly as described in the listing, walking distance to a nice restaurant on the water. Driving distance to a nice town with good restaurants and about 35 minutes from Bar Harbor. Bobbie was very responsive and helpful during the process. We did unfortunately run into a lot of mosquitoes in the driveway. I advise future renters to come prepared with citronella candles and bug spray to keep them at bay. Overall we were very happy with our stay (my parents, spouse and two young children) in the area and would definitely recommend to others looking for an Acadia experience with a stay on the quieter side of the island.

Awesome house for a group!

This home was the perfect stay! As a large group of friends traveling there was plenty of space for everyone. The kitchen was well equipped with everything needed to cook and then some! Plenty of linens and beds were comfy. The area around the house was quiet and felt like we were locals. Easy drive to Acadia NP and Bar harbor. I would absolutely stay here again and recommend to friends and family looking to visit the area!

About the host

Hosted by Bobbie Turner

Host profile image
My family has been coming to Mount Desert Island (MDI) since 1991. We love the character of Bass Harbor village--the slower pace of life here, the sound of the bell buoys on the water, and the unique beauty and history of MDI. There really is no place in the world like it!

As my parents have gotten older, the next generation has stepped in to manage our summer vacation home for visitors. Our goal for each of you is to allow you to experience the simple beauty of the island and to fall in love with it, just as we have.

Our house is divided by an interior wall into two separate homes: Harbor View Cottage in the front (this listing) and Bass Harbor Hideaway in the back (vrbo #351747). Harbor View Cottage is larger, more updated, and offers a picturesque view of Bass Harbor from the living room bay window. Bass Harbor Hideaway is less updated, more rustic, and offers a great value for this prime island location.

Our family also owns a ski townhouse rental property in Breckenridge, Colorado: "BreckenDen" (vrbo #892238). Please let us know if we can answer any questions about our rental properties. We'd love to have you stay with us!

Why they chose this property

Bass Harbor is an active fishing village with a mix of vacationers and year-round residents. We love that our side of the island---known as the 'Quiet Side'---is not busy or commercial, but has held onto the original character of the area. Stay with us and you'll discover a true sense of the beauty and slower pace of coastal Maine (away from the tour buses and traffic).

Because our home is right across the street from the harbor, visitors enjoy cool sea breezes and the sounds of bell buoys and fog horns--all things you'd miss with rentals that aren't at the water's edge.

What makes this property unique

Harbor View Cottage overlooks an active, lobster-fishing harbor, with photo-worthy sunsets right outside the door. Step back in time as the fog rolls in, imagining the area's nautical history, which includes the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and surrounding seafaring community. The Cottage is also walking distance to the Seafood Ketch restaurant.
