Great spot just far enough from town to be secluded and quiet but close enough if you need something from the grocery store or a quick bite out. The cabin is very nicely decorated, kitchen is well stocked and the bed was very comfortable. Close to so many attractions, hiking and biking. Great time and we’d love stay here again.
Great home with a lodge feel. Well apportioned with cooking utensils etc. Views out every window for wildlife viewing. Outstanding porch and back deck for meals. The map on VRBO shows the site East of Custer, however it is actually located 6 miles west of Custer. Minor inconvenience if you spend each day in Black hills, Mount Rushmore or State Park. Will book again
Thank you for renting us the cabin for the week. It was very nice and a great location in the Black Hills. We really enjoyed our stay and had a great time. Also thank you for going "above and beyond" searching for something that was lost, it was very kind and much appreciated!
Except for check in (VRBO told us to contact the owner, but the owner thought VRBO had given us instructions, waited over an hour to get in), I would have given this a 5. The cabin is perfect for exploring the area, Seating on outside patio and in kitchen area, kitchen well stocked and it is so quiet. Loved the cows roaming in the woods! I would stay here again! Thank you!

.Very clean, comfortable, roomy, well ventilated. Lots of dust from the road - had to continually clean the bikes. Also - owner, servicemen, and deliverymen were frequently at the address; made privacy a bit of a concern. All in all a nice stay.
So check in time says 1pm I showed up at 1 only to find the cleaning lady she says check in isn’t until 430. I left message with owner no answer back no signal up there without the WiFi so I sat in my car til some of the other family got there. We cleaned the fridge shelves before we put our food in. And the couch is well worn and ripped. But after all the issues we had a great time and enjoyed being close to Custer
The property was great- lots of room for us but we did have to move knickknacks to have a place to put our stuff. Everything was clean and ready to go when we got there except the refrigerator- found a plate of food covered in foil in there and needed to wipe down shelves before loaded our food.
The owners were helpful with things to do in Custer and kept us informed about what was happening in town. It was a little weird when they came over the day before we left to mow the yard and packages were delivered for them while we were there.
I was concerned about the master bedroom bed- the footboard was a little big and awkward to get around especially in the dark. And if you ever repaint the upstairs bathroom, can you move the mirror down a little- I know I am short but not that short and all I could see in the mirror was the top of my head. (and it was good that I was short or I would have hit my head on the TV in the master bedroom every time I got out of bed).
All in all, we love Custer and would stay here again!
We loved the home and having AC was an extra perk in the really hot weather we had.
Wish the back deck was a bit more picturesque… large tank and tarp shed kind of ruined the view so we ate our meals on the front deck.
Owners were super responsive to our need for more grill propane.
Lovely house! Well stocked!
This is my third, and best, cabin I’ve stayed in for our annual vacations. This cabin is well furnished from the bedrooms, to the living room, to the front porch and back deck.
The setting is gorgeous. It is 6 miles outside of Custer which gets you away from the crowds while being close enough to go in for supplies.
Situated for a short drive to any Black Hills attraction. We visited Wind Cave NP, Custer SP, Deadwood, and many things in between.
I would highly recommend this cabin to anyone and will stay again if in the area.
I am writing this review at the direction of VRBO management/customer service, after frustration with the host. In good faith, I paid in full, months before the reservation. There were several problems and inaccuracies with this listing. I tried to contact both the host and cleaning service the morning after we checked in. Neither number would answer or take a message. The gas stove burner switches were broken and continue to leak gas in the off position. The dishwasher was out of service, and apparently had been for weeks. The TV is old technology and the remote is dog chewed. The recliner is broken. The property was listed with dishwasher, fireplace and fire pit. At check in, we were told by the maid there was a fire ban and no fires allowed. After checking with Black Hills Forrest service website, this was not true. Neither Custer State Park, Custer County (where this property is located) nor Pennigton County, the adjacent county, are in the current ban unit. Finally this property is NOT suitable for six adults. The bed in the "teal room" is a worn out mattress that is in dire need of replacement. There is only room for 3 people at the dining table. There is only room for 4 people in the family/TV/fireplace area. The grounds are unkept outside, with tarps, tailgate mats, left over 2 x 4 pieces, toys and tools. There are free ranging cattle that rub on your vehicles, crap in the drives and moo loudly in the early morning as "wake up" call. But the most disturbing part is the host attitude. First, there was no response until we left the property. I had contacted them several times to see about reporting/fixing the problems, with no answer and no ability to leave a message. But after frustration with issues that were misrepresented and lack of contact, I simply asked for an adjustment for our inconveniences. I had hoped this would be dealt with professionally, after all we paid in full--sight unseen--in good faith. But unfortunately this was met with an abrupt selfishness and unwillingness to make adjustments, even though she admitted full knowledge of the appliances being in disrepair. She went further to say that if I gave any negative review she would consider it "blackmail!" Ridiculous! After all, I paid in advance, she has the advantage.
Cindy and Rick Hamm provided the perfect cabin for our Dakotas sightseeing vacation. Comfy furnishings and well a appointed place made our vacation wonderful. Our hosts were very accommodating and provided a prompt level of service. Custer SD is a great jump off spot to see the magnificent natural sights of the area.
Quaint cabin however somewhat unkept. It was very basic but worked out ok for our family as we weren’t there a whole lot during our stay. Very good location right outside of Custer; close to all the fun things to do while in South Dakota. 30 minute drive to Mt. Rushmore and even closer to Crazy Horse. Even though it says there’s a fire pit does not mean you’re able to use it -be sure to check the local flag warnings. A couple cons: dishwasher wasn’t working and the grill ran out of propane making our delicious grilled steak dinner a bust. All in all, I’d give it a 5/10 as far as the stay goes but a 10/10 for the adventure!
Location was Private and Secluded Perfect spot away from the hustle and bustle and crowds. - Map on the listing showed in Custer State Park but was on the West side of Custer. No big deal though, only 8 minutes to Custer. Property was nice sized for our family of 5. We were disappointed that the cleaning practices advertised weren't followed. High Touch surfaces disinfected ... Switches weren't wiped down for instance and a minimum 1 day vacancy between stays (another guest left a note dated the same day we checked in).
There was also a HUGE Moth problem the entire stay we were there. We were very careful when we opened doors and hardly did at night.
Cindy was a great host! The property was spacious for our family of four, clean, and centrally located to all the things we wanted to see. We loved that they provided firewood for the firepit and were easy to reach if we had questions/issues. The only negative is the couch and recliner have seen much better days. Would be nice to have newer furniture in that room.
Lovely cabin with comfy rooms, tranquil and peaceful. Good central location for sites taken during the day and came home to play games on the beautiful scenic deck! .Perfect for us!
