Booking through Expedia/VRBO turned out to be a total scam
In February 2024, we booked accommodation in Ajaccio Corsica for a month through the Expedia website.
We received confirming emails from both Expedia and VRBO advising that our booking was confirmed.
The original booking website had made no reference to VRBO but we simply thought that this was an internal booking process through these agencies.
On our arrival in Ajaccio we received a text message from our purported host advising that he had cancelled the booking one month prior to our arrival.
So we were in Ajaccio at the height of the tourist season without accommodation for a month long stay.
While the VRBO help line staff were very helpful - we found that a second booking made at VRBOs request through their website was also not available and had not been available for a year. - this after we had paid for the accommodation and turned up and waited outside the premises for a couple of hours.
Our only option at that stage was to spend a month in a hotel room at 2 1/2 times the original booking cost.
At least VRBO have paid the very significant difference between the new accommodation cost and the original cost but refuse to pay us back the original booking amount.
A web search of the 'host' shows that the site is a total scam.
We will continue to pursue a full refund from VRBO and Expedia.
But this has totally destroyed my confidence in these booking sites.
