We enjoyed our stay however when we did encounter an issue (the AC stopped working on our last day) We could not get in touch with host. I left two messages and called once and was never contacted. We left a note for the cleaners so that hopefully it would get to the host and the issue could be fixed prior to new renters coming in.
We have a wonderful week staying in Log Shaker of Salt. The good far outweighed the bad. Minor bads: The Two large stove burners didn’t work, CD player didn’t work “nocd” code for multiple disks. No problem for us, as we don’t usually watch TV on vacation. They can use a high table on top deck for snacks and drinks while watching the sunset. Overall fine vacation.
with Netflix and Prime.
I loved the little cabana. Very close to the beach and cabana was attractive and clean. Didn’t have any communications with the host but didn’t need them as instructions were very clear on VRBO site and did get the needed final check in instructions three days before my checkin date which was exactly what it said on Vrbo site. I would come back to the cabanas.
The owner(s) of unit #22 have not maintained it. The pictures have to be 10+ years old. They furniture on the main deck is falling apart; we could not use the table and benches at all. The other furniture needs a good cleaning. The rooftop deck should not be used; the structural bolts are completely rusted and while we were there, part of that decking fell off and landed on the deck below right in front of the entrance to the home. The first floor “tiki bar” area was a complete mess; it is dirty and has not been maintained. Inside the house was okay; however, it is in need of maintenance as well. The kitchen faucet leaks and the bed is HORRIBLE. I messaged the “host” however I have not received a response.
No communication until a fire alarm was going off. Attempted communication for almost a month to my stay. Erin L refused to respond to emails, voice calls, and text messages not only thru me but from vrbo until we message saying their for alarm was disconnected due to continued beeping. VRBO couldn't resolve any issues because Erin would not respond to any contact. The decks were dirty and nasty. The top balcony was unsafe, The outside table was broken and the bar below the place was so filthy we couldn't use it. You are in the 7th cabana from the walk way to get to the beach. The pictures are misleading and they obvously have no pride in their property. Trash was in the parking area and storage. The fridge got extremely hot, which means it's about to go. The floor inside was dirty. The blind was damaged. Even their neighbor who owns the property right next door said every guest complains about Erin and her 2 properties there and lack of communication or giving a care about their needs. This was our honeymoon and all the ongoing issues and stressed that was added on by Erin refusal to respond. I Messaged her numbers today to complain directly to her once again about not responding and she threatened me with a complaint against me? Lol. I have already filed a consumer complaint against her and vrbo, in the process of filling Better business bureau complaints in Hatteras as well as Virginia Beach where they reside.
The cabana was clean and had everything we needed for our stay. Everyone in the area, the group of cabanas, were very friendly, neighborly and had good fishing advice. The owner was available and quick to respond to questions we had. It was a great stay!
We had a wonderful stay. In spite of a few mishaps.
The community was very pleasant. Everywhere we traveled in the area all of the people were very polite and had lots to share. There is no need to be concerned about safety however, always just be cautious about your surroundings. We ventured out with our bikes for several days to check out our neighborhood. We even did two boat rides. The first was a mini cruise to see the sunset beautiful. The other was to go fishing.
We definitely will return to this place again.
We ABSOLUTELY loved it...BUT...We were under the impression from the online photos and description was that our Cabana was Oceanfront and Beachfront....online had us to believe our porch stepped right on to the beach...the Cabana was actually 5 or 6 cabanas away from the beach....All that being said...WE TRULY ENJOYED OUR STAY!!!

Vacation issues
Upon arrival we could not gain entry to unit. Placed a call to owner/manager. Did not receive return call. After we figured out the lock (which had wrong instructions) and finally got in, we discovered that we didn't have any TV. Another unanswered call to owner/manager. We were forced to watching TV on our phones. Since it was New Years Day we knew we had to deal with it. Being a former property manager/ owner myself this was a perfect example of what I strove not to become -- a totally rude and unresponsive property owner. One that cares about one thing and one thing only-- the mighty dollar. There were several other items that needed attention but we'll just let them go.
Property needs some maintenance done to it,front door didn't have a deadbolt and the strike plate wasn't secure.Property could easily been broken in to,needs several boards replaced or screwed in to place.Overall not bad for the money.
The cabana was nice and clean just the perfect size would stay again although the bath room sink wouldn’t drain and the pots and pans could be upgraded all in all it’s a nice place to stay

Oct 2022 stay
We spent 5 nights at the cabana. We liked the location and for the most part the stay was great.
The property could use a little updating.
The bed skirt is very dirty but the bed was comfortable. The bathroom sink is very very slow to drain. The deck has some loose boards and we couldn’t use any of the other furniture due to being covered with algae. Just needs good power wash. The crows nest chairs are newer and comfortable but the steps become slick if wet due to algae. The counters, fridge, floors good be cleaned better upon our arrival but for the price you can’t beat the place.
We enjoyed the beach, fresh seafood and just relaxing this week.

The Cabana was pretty much what we expected. Walkway to the beach was great. You could see a glimpse of the ocean and the sunset from the roof deck. Two great chairs on the roof deck.
For the most part the cabana was clean. There were broken tortilla chips in the bottom of one of the cabinets. I choose to line the cabinets with paper towels. WiFi and TV service was terrible, BUT this could have been because of hurricane Ian,
Our biggest issue was the clogged drain in the bathroom sink. We had to use the kitchen sink. This issue WAS mentioned in a previous review at the end of August. There is no excuse for not responding quickly to a known problem. We would not rent this unit again.
My husband and I spent a glorious week walking on the beach and relaxing on the beach and enjoying time on the upstairs deck. Lost shaker of Salt was just perfect. It had everything we needed. We hope to go back again.

Lost shaker of salt
Such a cute little cabana in a great location. Would have loved it more if it was directly on the beach. The neighbors were pleasant and not too loud. The only negative was that the pull out couch did not have a mattress to sleep on. There was a blow up topper that did not have a pump for it so one person had to sleep on the couch as is all week.

Not as good as the rest
I have stayed at the Hatteras Cabanas in the past - each time a different cabana. This was the 3rd cabana I had rented and did not find it up to par with the previous rentals. In attempting to contact the owner - she did not reply to VRBO messages and so I had to text her, and then had to text her again to get an actual answer. This was very disheartening.
Upon arrival the place was clean enough but there were several details that when comparing to other places I stayed - made it evident that this rental is not a priority. Bathroom lights over the sink were out, there was NO STOVE (if this was in the description, I missed it and would never have thought that a STOVE was an item i had to check on), Curtains covering the slider were so sheer that at night - i was very uncomfortable feeling like neighbors could see inside - *(fortunately I had a sheet that I hung up over it), the mattress cover was stained and ripped as I used my own sheets so I saw this, the outside hose did not have an attachment so it was useless when trying to spray anything clean, the outside "gardens" were unkempt, the outside "tiki" bar had garbage behind it amongst the overgrown "garden" - and finally - the DOOR DID NOT LOCK!! I finally noticed this at the end of the week as I just kept using the key code but never actually pushed the door to see if it locked and it did NOT - and before I am told I needed to pull harder or flip the switch on the back = I did ALL these things and more and you could just turn the handle, push and go in!! INSANE!!! When the owner puts in the description that they may not have supplies for you because they are from out of town - that's your first clue that this property is not attended to. I would not stay in this cabana again.
The check in process was super easy, location is perfect with the ocean view on the third story. Loved being able to hear the waves from our unit. Would definitely book a stay here again next time we visit!

About the host
Hosted by Erin
My husband and I bought the Lost Shaker of Salt in February, 2007. We started running the property as a vacation rental by owner in 2008. We live three hours away and go there regularly ourselves. Mike is in retail and I (Erin) am in computers. We are a forty something couple. We love the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle. We love music, cocktails on the top deck, and having a great time. We are pround members of the Parrothead Club of Tidewater. We wanted our cabana to be relaxing, fun, and cheerful, all at the same time. We think we accomplished that at the Lost Shaker of Salt. Come check us out, we know you will be pleased!
Why they chose this property
Mike and I got married up the beach in Kill Devil Hills seven years ago and ever since it has been our dream of owning a piece of our own paradise.
