About this property

Charming vacation cottage since 1930 with a spectacular view of Lake Erie

Enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Erie! This 1930s cottage sits atop a bank overlooking the Lake and provides an extraordinary respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Relax listening to the waves or watching lake freighters pass in the night.

The area is full of charm, fun and nature: two nearby harbors, beautiful parks and beaches, 19 covered bridges, golf, birding hot spots, scenic overlooks, historic octagon houses, 24 wineries and many restaurants - quirky casual to fine dining.

We're new to VRBO, but don't worry, you won't be disappointed. The cottage and hosts have catered to hundreds of happy guests after a reopening in 2019. In the short time since then, many guests have returned two or three times and some six times. Nothing speaks louder than repeat business!

For decades this cottage was booked solid with regulars who had standing reservations. As guests and the owner aged the property remained well-maintained, but was never marketed and use diminished. We're thrilled to be able to begin sharing this special place again.

The electrical and plumbing have been completely updated; the heating and cooling are new. By design, some original furnishings remain to maintain the original charm and character. In a few cases, there may be a bit too much character as we painstakingly work to restore some pieces to their former glory. The process will take time, but you'll find the space peaceful and comfortable with an unbeatable view.

What Canary Cottage may lack in polish, it makes up for in charm. Our guests find it a wonderful antidote to the sterile and predictable lodging that’s too common – and they tell us the hosts are great too! :)

For those who need modern amenities, we offer those too. We provide 47 live TV channels, streaming options via Roku or bring your own streaming device, e.g. Chromecast, Firestick or AppleTV to connect to an HDMI port A powerful router, discretely located in the living room, is connected to 200 Mbps internet service, making it perfect for those that have to catch up on work or just for uploading your photos of the lake!

Great property

We had a great time at the cabin. Right on the lake with beautiful views and everything we needed, and the property manager kept in touch making sure everything was good. Highly recommend and we hope to visit again.

Very nice lake view, 4 seasons rear patio was fantastic for playing cards, or just watching all the wildlife. While there we saw a huge eagle.

Perfect weekend getaway

Walked in the front door and gasped at the Lake Erie view. Outside, you can hear the waves and watch numerous birds, including bald eagles, fly right by. Rick and his dad are attentive and thoughtful hosts. My husband loves to swim and Rick forwarded lake temperatures ahead of our visit! Public beach is but a mile away. We will be back!

Beautiful view!

I look forward to this weekend all year and it never disappoints! The view is EVERYTHING! Clean, comfortable cottage lacks nothing. New friends made at the park’s beach and a visit with our known friend, Mr. Ross. I highly recommend this little cottage!

Wonderful, quiet getaway

What a lovely getaway spot! This little house has spectacular views of the lake, and it relaxes you just to sit on the enclosed porch and listen to the waves lap. This place is a throwback to lake cabins of my childhood - not fancy, but very comfortable - except, I should note, with really good wifi for computers and streaming TV. Rick and his dad were super responsive when I asked anything and very unobtrusive the rest of the time, and both check-in and check-out were a breeze. Thanks for a relaxing weekend away.

Great cottage

Beautiful view of the lake. Cottage was very clean and comfortable. Enjoyed driving around town and seeing all the sites. We would love to come back next year during warmer weather.

Cozy quiet cottage with an amazing view of Lake Erie

We volunteered at D-Day event and rented this place due to location. It was nice to be able to walk to the the park and then come back to the cozy cottage. Nice screened in back porch to sit and watch the waves of Lake Erie. The owner looked up the weather, sent the idea of walking to park, had the greatest greeter to welcome us, and had water and treats waiting for us. Couldn’t ask for a better host! The personal details were very thoughtful. Highly recommend and would definitely stay again!

Cottage with beautiful view of the lake

We enjoyed our stay at this cottage. It was comfortable enough for the 4 of us. We had a beautiful view of Lake Erie, very relaxing. The neighborhood beach was a few minute drive and was clean and not overly crowded. The cottage was close to various places to eat. Rick and his father were lovely hosts who were very welcoming and accommodating. We would definitely book here again.

It was a perfect place for our annual girls get away. It is an drive to the beach and the view is amazing. Super close to a couple of vineyards. Makko and Buccia, highly recommend them as well. We had a great time :)

A peaceful retreat

My 90 year-old mother-in-law wanted to spend some time watching the lake. This was perfect. The cottage is comfortable and homey. It was a little cool for sitting in the backyard, but the enclosed back porch was perfect. We spent out mornings roaming around Ashtabula County in search of covered bridges and quilt barns. Then home in the afternoons to paint and talk. It was wonderful.

Lake Erie Quintessential, Cozy Cottage Tranquility

Rick, Amy, and Rick's dad Dick are superb host! This cozy cottage has a spectacular Lake Erie view! At night we roasted marshmallows over the fire pit and spoiled ourselves with s'mores....all with a picture perfect lake view under the stars. Rick's dad overwhelmed us by giving us red roses to celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary! Wow!!!

Gem on the Lake

Just going out of town for a while and the cottage was perfect. Homey and warm it was a cozy spot for a mini getaway. The weather was cold and gray but the lake was beautiful. Next time we hope to use the fire pit that was provided. They also had wood for us too, but the weather was temperamental. Very enjoyable little spot. Only wish it had a bit more counter space, but we go creative. The views were amazing and worth the drive. Thanks.

Perfect little getaway!

We had the best time in this cute little cottage! We came up for a mini birding trip and wow, it delivered!! Rick gave us some hot spots to go to and we saw some really cool stuff there. Rick's dad is so kind and adorable. Rick was very helpful with maps and places to go. I wish we didn't have to leave, it was so enjoyable and peaceful. Truly everything that we wanted. The restaurants nearby were delicious. Very large portions at the squirrel place for anyone reading this. And I highly recommend going to the winery that used to be a church! Overall one of the best trips I've ever been on and we can't wait to come back!!

Weekend Retreat

When looking for a weekend getaway I chose comfort and ambience over luxury. I was looking for a place with an amazing view of the water by which I could fulfill a lifelong dream of writing a book, and that is exactly what I found in this sweet cottage on the lake. This home had lots of character with it's old fashion nuances but also had a comfy bed, an amazing showerhead and high speed internet. The owner Rick was attentive to all my questions beforehand and once I was there. He made sure that the sunroom, which is where I really wanted to spend my time, with a beautiful view of the lake, was kept warm with an electric heater and access to an electric blanket for extra warmth for my lap. It was unseasonably warm for the end of November so I actually was able to to sit outside in a thick sweatshirt and enjoy the sound of the waves crashing on the cliff. Since it was off season for this quaint little town, it was very quiet as well. I did not have the opportunity to meet his father that lives next door. I had read previous reviews and was disappointed I missed him. But next time . . . because I will definitely visit again. I would probably suggest that if you plan on cooking at all, you may want to bring your own spices and if you need any kind of special cookware for a favorite recipe, just bring it with you to be on the safe side. I was able to utilize the items provided for the meals I planned. I would definitely recommend this cottage! And OH! The sunset! You won't want to miss it!

A little gem

This place is so homey. The sun room is beautiful and the back yard and view is awesome. Both nights we had a fire and sat out there listening to the waves. The winds were high because of Ian but my sisters and I had a great time. Our 5th annual Sister’s weekend. We’ll be back for sure.
