🌃 Colmar: A city to enjoy without moderation!
For Georges Duhamel (who wrote it in 1931), Colmar was the “most beautiful city in the world”… It has often been said to be the most Alsatian of Alsace's cities!
Without getting into an overload of superlatives, Colmar remains undoubtedly a completely exceptional city due to the richness and variety of its historical and architectural heritage.
It is located near Germany and Switzerland, between the Vosges and the Rhine, Strasbourg and Mulhouse. The city offers visitors a striking shortcut through over a thousand years of European history. Furthermore, Colmar, with its 67,000 inhabitants, retains the charming feel of a "city in the countryside", which adds to its unique appeal.
Despite the ups and downs of a turbulent history, the city has managed to preserve an exceptional homogeneity in its historical centre, which, classified as a “protected sector”, has undergone continuous restoration and enhancement. The vast pedestrian area of the old town allows visitors to admire the countless treasures of a heritage that is both rich and varied, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Whether it’s the House of Heads (built in the early 17th century), which is named after the 111 heads adorning its facade, or the Pfister House, a beautiful Renaissance-style bourgeois mansion with medieval design, each of its monuments is unique in its own right.
Religious art in Colmar is also very rich: the Dominican Church, which houses the famous “Virgin with a Rosebush” by Alsatian painter and engraver Martin Schongauer, as well as the Saint Martin Collegiate Church, are wonderful examples of pure and sober Gothic art, marked by great simplicity.
As you wander through the streets, the visitor, amazed, discovers the many beautiful signs, the roofs with their vibrant colours... Strolling along the Quai de la Poissonnerie, once the nerve centre of fishing and fish trade, one falls under the charm of this picturesque district, now known as “Little Venice.”
