We’ll begin with the good. Powell Lake is a clean, quiet location offering seclusion, nature and water sports close to Munising, Pictured Rocks and other U.P. attractions. Owner Todd was kind and responsive to inquiries. This being said, our stay was not what we expected based on the listing, the reviews given or the lodge’s website. It is understood that the U.P. has different standards than much of the country, and that this is a fishing cottage and snowmobiler’s hangout. However, there is no way that the property delivered a 5-star experience. The 4.5 star “cleanliness rating” is the most baffling to us. We found cobwebs and dust everywhere, and we had to wash all the bath towels in hot water and hyper-dry them to kill the mildewy smell in all of them. We literally found dirty dishes in the cupboards. We cannot understand where the glowing reviews came from. There apparently has been a serious and damaging rise in the lake level, as the advertised beach and firepit are under four feet of water, as is the former dock (there is a “new” dock sagging into the water which is usable). Obviously, the level of the lake is beyond the owner’s control, however, amending the listing is not, and it constitutes truth in advertising. An honest listing would mention that some features are unavailable this year, due to lake levels, as we have seen other VRBO owners do with Lake Michigan rentals. Even IF the listing was not amended, it would be common courtesy to inform a potential renter of the differences in the rental in real time vs. the listing. There were a multitude of other issues, but we don’t want to go on and on because the point here is not to berate someone who is trying to make his property work for him. However, given our disappointment, we don’t want anyone else to be misled (intentionally or unintentionally), so we’re being honest for the sake of future customers.
