The town of Beech Mountain is the highest incorporated city east of the Mississippi River with year-round comfortable temperatures (OK-maybe the ski season temperatures are darn cold, but it is winter on a mountain after all).

4900+ square foot log home in moderately wooded setting located near by town's recreational facilities and 1.9 miles from Beech Mountain Resort parking lot entrance.

Home's exterior is field stone and cedar shake. The Lodge's interior, which is almost exclusively wood, creates rustic atmosphere with modern conveniences. Wood beamed ceilings throughout. Many of the walls are 16'-24' thick hand-hewn logs. Interior materials are recycled from 148 year-old grist mill located in Chatham, Virginia; the 142 year-old Reedy Fork Mill formerly outside Winston-Salem, NC; and, a barn of unknown age and origin in the Banner Elk area.

Living room, dining room, and kitchen floors are hardwood (area rug covers almost all of living room); all upper halls and bedrooms are carpeted. The ground floor and bathrooms are ceramic tiled.

Large living room with over-sized wood burning fireplace (firewood provided). Dining room is 10' x 35' and seats 30 at one sitting. Kitchen has flat-surface stove top, separate flat-surfaced stove with self-cleaning oven, combination microwave/range hood and two GE refrigerators with ice makers. Wood deck is 18' x 18' with perimeter bench seating and over-sized commercial gas grill. Ten bedrooms contain ten full-size beds and ten queen-size beds, three adult-size bunk beds as well as a twin-size sofa bed.

TV room has 55" Samsung flat panel smart TV with YouTube TV digital streaming service, high-speed broadband internet access, VCR/DVD player and surround sound system as well as a queen-size sleeper sofa, which may be used as eleventh bedroom. Third floor hallway has foyer with large window seat, sofa, and 42' flat panel TV with YouTube TV and a PlayStation 4 game system.

Off-street parking for up to eleven or fourteen vehicles (dependent upon vehicle size)..

An Amazing Weekend Stay
The house was in an amazing location and there were plenty of attractions within a short drive of the house. John was the most helpful host we have ever worked with, he was easily accessible the entire weekend and called to welcome us upon arrival. The house was great for our large group with amazing features - a favorite of ours was the piano! We definitely recommend this house!

Awesome place
We loved this cabin! Our church group stayed in this cabin for the weekend while we volunteered with Samaritan’s Purse. Upon check-in, the owner called to welcome us and give a short orientation. He was very attentive to our needs through out the entire weekend. Everyone in my group absolutely loved this cabin. It allowed us to all be together in one setting but have our own individual rooms. I have continued to communicate with the owner since our visit and have become fond friends through communication. I’ve even already booked with them again for next year! Thank you for allowing us to stay at your place. We really enjoyed it!

Wonderful Host!
John is truly an amazing host. Thought we didn’t make it to the property due to the Hurricane, John communicated the entire time, kept me up to date with weather conditions and kept my family and I safety as his main priority. He was communicative and very caring in the process! I look forward to revoking his place very soon!

Amazing accommodations!
Property is beautiful and had more than enough room and space! We booked this house for friends and family to stay during our wedding weekend. All the guests had great things to say! John the host was very communicative and responsive. The only thing to note is that it wasn’t communicated to us until 3 days before our stay that paper products such as toilet paper and paper towels are not provided. It would have been nice to have that stated in the listing (had to coordinate buying that after I had already started traveling). Otherwise, it seemed like everything else you would need was there!

Family Long Weekend
From age 78 to 3 years, our family of 16 people, enjoyed staying here. There were a few issues because of the previous tenets but the owner was very helpful in working with us on everything. The kitchen was a little smaller than I had thought it would be for a house that can hold 30 people - but we were able to grill steaks, hamburgers and have taco night in our three night stay without any issues! It was a great weekend and John is great to work with!

About the host

Hosted by John Warthman

Host profile image
The Warthman Family-Kay, John, Jonathan, Josh and his wife, Natalie-own the Lodge. Kay is a long-ago retired nurse, who devoted her time to parenting and now focuses on church related activities. John is a retired real estate property management exec., who oversaw management of 17,000+ apartments, 3,800+ condominiums, 1 million+ square feet of office space and a number of home owner associations in a 30+ year career.

Why they chose this property

We bought this home when we lived in Charlotte and our oldest son was just born. We had visited the mountains during the summer and fell in love with Beech Mountain. A subsequent ski trip further cemented that feeling. During John's summers of his first school years, he lived with his grandparents in 5-bedroom converted stone barn. The Lodge reminded him of those wonderful childhood memories. With the help of his contractor brother Bob, he bought, refurbished, and expanded it as well as added a stone facade to the majority of the house during weekends for 8 months to bring his vision to fruition.

Because we've lived in GA for many years now, we've been unable to enjoy the Lodge and its peaceful setting as much as we'd like. However, over the years we've owned and operated the Lodge, we've been privileged to serve many families and groups. Many of them have returned again and again causing us to think of them as extended family. So, we derive pleasure from the enjoyment they experience as well as the relationships we've formed over those years.

What makes this property unique

The setting of the Lodge combined with materials contained within it just give us the feeling of living in another, less hurried time. However, it's just 2.1 road miles from the busy Beech Mountain Resort ski slopes. During the non-ski season, there's a large array of nearby activities and attractions available. We think it's the perfect combination of yesteryear atmosphere combined with those many nearby attractions and modern conveniences.
