About this property

17th Century Stone, Traditional, Cosy, Country Cottage with Original Features

Chime Cottage is a charming, period property ( circa 1670 AD).
Pet Friendly with Free WiFi, BT TV & Netflix

*Brand new modern bathroom installed 2024*

Situated in Bradwell village, this cottage represents the peace and relaxation that you associate with Village Life. Typically stone built exterior with solid oak original beams running throughout the lounge, kitchen/dining area and upstairs bedroom, together with the inglenook fireplace, form the perfect image of 17th Century Middle England.

Once inside, you will notice that the stone sink and and utility area is hewn from the bedrock, on which the cottage is built. The well equipped kitchen provides ample storage and there are sufficient place settings for up to 4/6 people. Although it is a working kitchen, sorry, there is no dishwasher! The kitchen leads to a small wash place containing a washing machine and combi-boiler, which provides constant instant hot water. Onward from the wash place is the little charming outside courtyard, with high stone walls and hanging garden.

The ground floor is completed by a small, cosy lounge complete with Inglenook fireplace and a wood burning stove. Once inside the lounge there is a 3-seater sofa-bed for occasional use and a matching armchair. Guests often comment that when they light the wood burner stove, they don't ever want to move!! However, that would be a big mistake, as there is lots to see and do beyond the walls of the cottage - both in the village and beyond. There is also a newly installed (2024) modern bathroom, with combination bath/shower & toilet.

Up the wooden staircase - which is rather steep - to the first floor landing you will find twin beds in a light, charming space, suitable for any age, but not for privacy as the main bedroom is located through the landing area. A family with children or a same gender group would be most suited to these sleeping arrangements.

The main bedroom has a double bed with luxury foam mattress, and convenient drawer units and nearby power sockets. Two windows provide dual aspect across the village and towards the hills beyond.

This character cottage also offers a taste of the present day with central heating, BT powered Smart TV and Wi-fi.

Out the front door and to the left is a small hill and left again takes you to the garage and its forecourt - where we politely ask you to park your car - abundant with potted plants (depending on the season). Here you will find a tiny gated arch which leads to the little terrace garden, typical of the cottages in this region. Many gardens are situated nearby, rather than within the grounds of the residence!
Depending on the season, here you can relax with a glass of wine overlooking the distant hills.

When you decide to venture beyond the cottage you can go down the main hill to the village. Here you will find the Post Office, which is the centre of the community, providing all the usual newspapers (and some unusual ones!), cards, etc. and a friendly conversation. There is a newly renovated CO-OP supermarket for your provisions, a beauticians, hairdressers, a Fish and Chip shop, a bakery and a Doctors' surgery!

There are two play parks - both well equipped - a chapel, a church and four pubs!! One of which is only 100 m/yards away.

Nearby villages include Castleton. Its name is the clue! Peveril Castle is situated high above the village and is well worth the treck for magnificent views!! Castleton has a wonderful array of tiny souvenir shops selling the famous 'Blue John stone' from the region's mines and many places to indulge yourself with cream teas and beverages, plus pubs serving full menus.

This is also the location of the famous Blue John Mine, Treak Cliff Cavern, Peak Cavern and the subterranean river cave, Speedwell Cavern. All these magnificent caverns are open to the public and have guided tours.

Hope village is en-rote to Castleton and is a favourite of walkers and visitors to its annual show, sheep-dog trials and car boot sales.

Travelling East you find Hathersage, the burial place of 'Little John' of Robin Hood fame. The closest City is Sheffield and can easily be reached, as can all of the above mentioned villages, either by car or bus, which stop in the centre of Bradwell!

From Manchester Airport it's approximately 1 hour 30 minutes by car. A car is strongly advised to make the most of this fascinating part of the world.

Well-dressing is a craft, unique to the area. This requires teams of villagers drawing, 'puddling' and petalling a themed picture using only natural resources to make up the completed pressed into a bed of clay. When it is complete it is mounted on a prominent site in each village. All the wells are different and some villages have more than one ( Bradwell has four!). This takes place during June through to September in Peak District villages.

A little further afield you will discover the villages of Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and many other villages of outstanding beauty, offering unique shopping opportunities and even cable car rides. Among these is the famous 'plague' village, Eyam, which is the only known village outside London to conract the Black plague. The plaques on the cottage doors tell the horrific stories of the passing of the 17th Century occupants! The museum tells the whole story.

Walkers will enjoy the fabulous network of public footpaths, sites of historic digs, and guided walking trips around the Peaks.

Chatsworth House is the residence of the Duchess of Devonshire, with many connections to The Royal Family. The house and gardens are open to the public all year round with the exception of a couple of weeks during the Christmas period. There is an adventure playground and a wonderful prize- winning Farm Shop. It is approximately 20 minutes by car from Bradwell.

The cottage has a fairly comprehensive collection of maps, walks and information booklets about the Peak District and all the amazing activities and opportunities to investigate the area.

If there is anything else we can help with, please don’t hesitate to let us know!

Many thanks
Alex

fantastic location and homely and cosy cottage
Barry and Chris were a pleasure to deal with, very prompt answers and the information made the start of the stay very easy The cottage us great very clean and homely. And even when the temperature dipped down to zero it was warm and cosy. Bradwell is a great place to explore the dark peaks area. A single procedure sheet would have simplified working out how the various appliances worked

Great location to explore the Peaks and views from the village are breathtaking. Three local pubs but didn’t serve the food and unfortunately the fish and chip shot is closed until early January so we had to buy some food from the CooP. Parking is tricky unless you have a really small car but we’ve managed to park not far from the property and we could walk to places locally. The cottage has all you’d need for a few days stay and any questions we’ve had were quickly responded to by the owner over the phone. The only downgrade for us was the central heating, yes it is a very old property and I wouldn’t expect it to go very warm but a respectable 20 degrees would be really cosy especially when one comes from a few hours walk in the countryside. We’ve used the log burner which was fantastic and easy to use and helped bring the overall temperature up. All in all we had a really good stay and we would definitely recommend it. Thank you Alex!

Some excellent facts and some not so great
The cottage itself is very well kitted out with everything you could possibly need and was very clean. The little welcome basket was very nice . However the second bedroom is not a room it’s a hallway with beds put in it. This in itself is fine but during the night if you want the bathroom you have to go through this to go all the way downstairs to the bathroom. Not the best. Also so many rules to this cottage I was always scared I was doing something wrong . Overall it was ok for a few nights. Not very big at all .

Lovely cosy cottage in a stunning location
We loved our weekend in this traditional stone cottage in the heart of Bradwell. They have everything you need in this small but perfectly equipped place. Really appreciated the wine and chocolate on arrival and the woodburner which really warms up the place( the central heating works really well too. ) The bath and shower are great with instant hot water and beds really comfy. Highly recommend!

Very lovely cottage in small, quiet Bradwell. A warm welcome. Very friendly neighbours, nice pub a few metres down the road. We felt at home and would have loved to stay longer. Parking is available but a bit tricky, very steep roads and narrow bends - the smaller the car, the better!

Family vacation
We had a cosy week in the cottage. Everything was as described. The cottage is perfect for a little family and has everything you need. It is situated in a nice little village with a coop supermarket, playgrounds and pubs nearby, where you can get by foot (for sportive people, the hill is very steep). There is lots to discover and activities within only a short cardrive - so much we couldn‘t do everything we wanted as the vacation was simply too short! Our questions were answered quite fast and we even got a new highchair for our child, thanks for that! As we had arrived at the cottage we were kindly asked whether everything was fine and the neighboors offered help and were very attentive and friendly. We had a wonderful yet too short time at lovely chime cottage and would highly recommend staying there!

About the host

Hosted by Alex Thompson

Host profile image
Alex here from Stockport, Greater Manchester.

In 2000 when I was 12 years old, my mum broke both her ankles in a nasty fall. After weeks of confinement, my dad took her to one of her favourite places - The Peak District - and they were fortunate enough to drive through the village of Bradwell.

Getting lost on a couple of the narrow, windy, country roads, they came across the most beautiful white cottage which was for sale: Chime Cottage.

They both instantly fell in love with it and the owner accepted their offer and it fast became the perfect retreat for all our family and friends for many years.

20 years later when my parents had to sadly sell the cottage, it was clearly breaking their hearts so my partner and I decided it 100% could not leave the family, so bought Chime Cottage so they could visit as frequently as they liked.

As a busy family we cannot get there all the time and have decided to share this beautiful retreat with you.

I know what a wonderful time our guests have had here and hope our future guests will find the same haven of peace, comfort and enjoyment in this glorious part of the world!

Why they chose this property

• Continually making improvements / decorating regularly keeping the place clean and fresh / Installed new BT TV & WiFi

• Location, Location, Location - ideal country escape for walking/hiking, nature trails and local attractions such as Castleton Caverns, Mam Tor, Bakewell, Chatsworth and many more besides.

• What's ours, is yours - We want you to feel completely at home so please treat it as your own. Feel free to use any of the amenities, walking gear, items from the pantry/fridge/freezer. If it's there, by all means use it :)
