About this property

Spacious House with Private Beach on Lake Michigan

Enjoy a vacation right on Lake Michigan! Go out the door to the lake and spend the day on your own 200 foot private beach. The house itself has beautiful views of the lake. Enjoy meals on a screened-in porch with still more beautiful views. The house has a unique artist-designed layout with a modest kitchen/living room/ dining area but very large studio rooms. There are three bedrooms on the first floor (two with King beds and one with a full bed). The lower floor has an enormous room with 6 beds for kids, a large TV, Nintendo, games, and more! There are 2 bunk beds (3 full and 1 twin) then 2 trundles (1 full and 1 twin).
A spacious attic / play area has legos and toys. Note: Small children must be supervised.

The property sits on a bluff with an easy private walk down to the water. The house is one of three full size houses owned by the same family. It shares a drive and walk with the next door house where Granny lives. She can be available for easy questions, but her son & daughter-in-law in Grand Rapids can handle your urgent questions or concerns. You can feel free with the use of your house and grounds, it's unlikely you'll see Granny unless you knock. There is an empty lot on the other side of the house. From the porch you cannot see another house or person.

The original house was built in 1935 and has been renovated and improved several times in the past 85 years. The living room has an amazing view of the lake! It also has charm with the same fireplace and knotty pine woodwork from the first construction. The kitchen and dining room although large by 1935 standards are modest by today’s standards but the appliances have all been updated. The dining room seats 8 and the living room has working wood fireplace.

Because an artist has been living here for the past few decades, there are some design choices that are non-traditional. Again, larger studio space was prioritized over family dining space. Also many of the walls are painted in unique and iridescent colors, but sometimes the paint is inconsistent or partially complete. We think it makes the house "interesting" and "fun" but if you are looking for "elegant" or "grandiose" this might not be the right choice.

The house has an eco-friendly water-sourced heat pump for year-round heating and air-conditioning. A modern tankless hot water system has been added so it is impossible to run out of hot water!

A large porch wraps around one and a half sides of the cottage. The lake and forest are visible from the entire porch. There is a lovely screened in section that can seat ten people. The front porch has a barbecue grill and seating overlooking the lake.

The kitchen has a stove, microwave, coffee maker, dish washer, garbage disposal, refrigerator and freezer (with ice maker). Plates, glasses and silverware are fully stocked. Pots, pans, colanders and assorted other kitchen equipment is also stocked. Although the kitchen is not large, it is bright and also overlooks the lake. It is easy to make trays of food and take them to the porch, beach, dining room, or living room.

You can build a wood fire in the fireplace, although we ask you follow our instructions and never leave it unattended. The classic wood file and fireplace is a great place to read a book and turn off cell phones!

You can walk right out any of the lake doors and go down to the beach. The beach is private and wonderful. Property owners own the land “to the water’s edge”. This means you can walk along the beach as far as you want as long as you are close to the water. You may see some beach walkers doing the same but they are not supposed to come up on your beach. The beach sand is clean and white, and the lake is clean freshwater. Depending on the day, the water can be as warm as 75 degrees (typically later in August or early September). See below for Lake Michigan updates.

The house has a large washer and dryer, Wi-Fi throughout, heat, air-conditioning, and even emergency backup power should that be necessary. It is not baby-safe. There are stairs, outlets and there may be choking hazards like Legos. Plan on supervising young children at all times.

Outside, we have sprayed for poison ivy, but it does exist in the woods and everyone should be careful. In summer months, there can also be ticks and mosquitos although these are mostly in the woods too.

We believe you will have a wonderful time at the Artist's Lake House!

Lake Michigan water levels / beach status - April 21, 2021
We are very encouraged by this spring's water levels. I updated the pictures to show the current levels. There's about 15 feet of beach in front of the sandbags. Last year the water was lapping against the sandbags so this is great!
We also own a second empty-lot property 100 feet south of this property (not the next 100 ft but the 100 after that). Guests are free to use that too which should provide ample room for sunbathing or a beach fire if there's not quite enough in front of the sandbags.

Covid and For-Sale status update March 14, 2021:

This year I am planning on blocking out an extra day between renters to give a more time to air out and disinfect. So the dates you see blocked off should already include this padded time.

For sale: We have had the house for sale for a year now. We don't expect this to affect our renters. We won't ask you to show it during your stay. Even if it does sell, the new owners may keep the rental agreements. And if not, we will give ample notice of a cancellation.

We like to keep open communication. Please feel free to ask if you have questions.

Beautiful Lake Michigan!

The house was perfect for us, our daughter, & grandchildren. We loved the sights and sounds of mighty Lake Michigan. My grandson said this was the best Holland vacation ever! The owners were responsive with an issue that came up & it was quickly rectified. Thanks for a great beach vacation!

We feel “fully Michiganed”

I’m a single mom from the Chicago area with three adult kids in their 20s and 30s. All brought their mates — 1 husband, 1 girlfriend, 1 boyfriend. Plus we have 2 beloved family dogs ( a small shih tsu and a 2-year-old golden retriever.) We all loved being together in The Artist’s House. The the bed situation is perfect - three couples had a comfy sleeping room. If you have younger kids, the basement bunk room is huge and deluxe. There was no bathroom crunch for 7 adults — 2 full baths, one half bath. But the BEST thing about this house: it’s nestled in nature. The big lake with the private beach is right in the front yard. The kitchen and dining room have lake views. The sound of the lake is in every room. The kids saw deer, black squirrels, loads of birds, fish. The house is comfortable and a little funky. The decor is nice, high-quality, but not stuffy or pretentious. The living room window is amazing and made me want to immediately write a thank-you note to the host. The outside areas are wonderful— the deck with a sunset view, the grill with a lake view, the magical screened porch. With older kids, I scheduled 3 “big outings “ ( dune ride, pontoon rental, brewery dinner) and let them do their own thing on the other days— shopping, beach time, day trips to Saugatuck. There is plenty to do in the neighborhood — cool stores, paddle boarding and kayaking. My kids has a glorious beach day where they all played in the water and reconnected.

Family vacation.

We had our children and their families along with our in-laws. We all brought our dogs too. Everyone had a great time. The house comes with so much, towels, beach chairs, fully stocked kitchen, firewood, I could go on and on. The views of Lake Michigan are amazing. We enjoyed the sunsets on the beach, followed by a bonfire. We had a fantastic family vacation and I would recommend this house anyone planning the same.

A wonderful home

We have stayed here three times now. We love the house. The huge screened in porch was enjoyed for meals, games and relaxing. The views of the lake are outstanding. It is a bunch of steps to the lake. But the trek is worth the climbs up and down. There is a huge TV in the beautiful lower level. But we don’t hardly use it.

Super cool house. Easy access to Lake Michigan! The view out of the house is spectacular! Loved talking walks down the wooded driveway! Fully supplied with all the necessities! Wi-Fi was a bit spotty. Freezer did not make ice. All in all was fantastic! Thank you!!

Beach house stay

We gathered at the beach house for a small family reunion. We had family ranging from 3 years old to 72. The setting was fantástic and allowed for relaxation and fun. The kitchen and bathroom were well stocked, we didn’t need anything. Sheryl was very communicative and quick to answer any questions we had. A note : we had a three year old, but the house is not baby proofed (noted in the listing). We had lots of adults and teens to help watch the baby, so we were all able to relax. My father in law is in a wheelchair, (the house is not accessible, not something we were too concerned about) so once we carried him up the stairs he was able to access his bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and back porch with ease. He was too ill to go to the beach, so we were not concerned with that. Full accessability was not our goal this time. If you have a family member who just wants to sit on the deck and watch the waves, this house is perfection. All in all, this place worked great for all ages. We had a great time and would definitely return!

2021 Labor Day

The view didn’t disappoint; HOWEVER, the property sure did. Very sad that a home so close to the lake would be so neglected. We spent the first few days sweeping, washing bedding (including mattress pads) and dishes, scouring sinks and tubs, cleaning the oven and grill, vacuuming etc. Spiders and cobwebs inside and out, ants, flies, and even a mouse in the house!!!! Opted not to complain to the owner after her reaction to our pointing out dirty, filthy mattress pads … when I said I pulled back the sheets she said, “who does that!?!” House is quirky but that wasn’t an issue. We had a great vacation with our Omie, kids, niece, and nephew. Holland has so many places to explore and enjoy. The best feature of this house is the view of the sunset.

It was perfect.

Big place w/ room for adult kids to spread out. Clean well equipped kitchen. Comfy beds and super nice bathrooms. Stairs to water w/ 2 nice decks, chairs and float things. Screened in porch for outdoor meals. Tons of supplies and owner very responsive to any questions. It is off the beaten path-a couple miles from town. Has an informal feel, a bit overgrown outisde except for mowed font/back lawn. There's wood for an outdoor fire which is awesome. Perfect pandemic vacation. Highly recommend it .

Spectacular view

The view and location of the house is stellar. The sunsets were stunning and the lake warm. Erosion has played a role on many beaches, but access was still good and there were plenty of places to sit on the new decks. Kitchen well stocked. Screened in porch was wonderful for meals and games. A few situations arose but were worked out and I appreciated the friendly communications with the host.

A big house with lots to offer.

Lake front property with a house well equipped that sleeps a small army. Whole house has AC too. The attic area is finished and is loaded with Legos for the kids. The lower levels has sleeping for 10 and a huge TV and gaming system. Great Internet too. The beach is eroding like most of Lake Michigan Shore but is still a fun place to spend the day.

This is an amazing property to rent. House is older, but well maintained. Lower level is fantastic. You could easily sleep 14 People. The attic area is a child’s dream playroom. Stunningly beautiful stay at the artist’s lake house

Our group of beach soccer moms and boys came for a long weekend and were all blown away by the gorgeous setting, super spacious accommodations and multiple thoughtful touches provided our wonderful, super responsive hosts. The house is a one of a kind eclectic jewel with a dream wing for a ton of kids, huge screened in porch with wrap around deck for meals, fun, and gazing out at the waves, unforgettable views of the water from almost every window, a beach you could walk a ways in both directions, comfy beds, plenty of hot water with good pressure, all in a beautiful setting surrounded by wildflowers, woods, water and nature. We created wonderful memories at the lake house can’t wait to come back again next year.

About the host

Hosted by Sheryl D'Amato

Host profile image
This lake property has been in our family for almost 100 years. Several generations have enjoyed not just the beach, view and water, but the carefree environment that this house inspires. We currently live and work in Grand Rapids where we raised our son and daughter, who also very much love the lake house.

Why they chose this property

We believe Lake Michigan has the best beaches in the world. The sand is soft and clean, the water is clear and and not salty, and usually the waves are enough to be interesting, but not scary. Add to this the privacy of 200 feet all to yourself and you have an unbeatable vacation.

What makes this property unique

The lake and large private beach is obviously the main draw, but the unique house will add a lot of fun to your experience. We almost guarantee that kids, even teens, will find this place "cool."
