About this property

"Winnie's Retreat." Fantastic Mountain View

If you are looking for a home that is quiet and has a beautiful view this is the place! Enjoy a relaxing vacation with breathtaking mountain views. Just off the Historic Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway, wind your way around to the house that is nestled into the side of the mountain. Gorgeous sunrises overlooking Pilot Mountain. Close to many hiking trails and short ride to Chateau Morrisette Winery. Mt. Airey also has a few wineries and craft beer establishments with beautiful locations not far into North Carolina. And don't forget the Old Fiddlers Convention that takes place in August at Felts Park which is 20 minutes away. The Blue Ridge Music Center is 6 miles from us on the parkway. Also the Hillsville Flea Market Labor Day weekend. Any Andy Griffith fans may want to visit the Andy Griffith Museum in his hometown of Mt. Airy N.C. about 30 minutes away. Tubing, also a lot of fun, just 25 minutes away.
Spacious living and dining rooms. 3 Bedrooms, 1 king, 1queen and one full. Plenty of space for a blowup mattress for the agile. Sunroom and Library have pullout couches. Enjoy breakfast in the eat in kitchen or take your coffee out on the covered porch for the magnificent views. Enjoy a BBQ out back with views into the Valley. We also have marked a trail from the house to a stream in the forest, it can be a little tricky. (10 minutes). During the day open the windows and enjoy the fresh mountain air. There is air conditioning if you so choose. The nights can get cool so bring a sweater. No wifi, we use our hot spots on our phones and have had great success.

Winnie’s Retreat was the BEST EVER

This home was warm, cozy, and very inviting. Every corner was spotless. Definitely a home away from home! The furniture was comfy, the beds were great, and the view was amazing. We can’t say enough about this lovely home!

Our family of six (three generations) loved Winnie's Retreat. We enjoyed the porch the most. What a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains! We listened to the birds (Eastern Towhee was our favorite) and were delighted to see hummingbirds, deer, and a five-lined skink. But the inside was also delightful; as cozy and comfortable as a grandmother's house, but also updated with modern conveniences. Everything was clean and in working order. The location is rural and peaceful, but in close proximity to Galax (and its BBQ competition) and The Blue Ridge Music Center. A nice touch was the family's story of Winnie's life; we appreciated the house more for it.

Our second home

We come to the area often and have made this place our second home when possible (until we find our own). It’s homie, clean, quiet and yes a little aged and dated but that’s what we love about it (besides the view and the peace and quiet).

Beautiful views & just like grandma's house

The views from this house can't be beat! The home was very clean and had just about anything you could need. It really felt like you were staying at your grandma's house, which we loved. There is a rustic trail down the back to a creek which was great for kids with a sense of adventure. Would definitely stay again.

The view was absolutely beautiful. The house had a very cozy feeling with plenty of room and the large deck was great for having breakfast and a cup of coffee while taking in the view.

Excellent from the first conversation to walking out the door.

### Review of Winnie's Retreat I recently stayed at Winnie's Retreat and was thoroughly impressed. The mountain views are truly unsurpassed, providing a stunning backdrop to a comfortable three-bedroom house that, despite being built in 1986, has been exceptionally well maintained. The tranquility of the location is remarkable; the loudest sounds were the calls of birds over the valley. The view includes Pilot Mountain in the near distance and, on clear nights, I believe I could see the lights of Winston-Salem far off. The house features comfortable beds, great cooking utensils, and plenty of space both inside and out. Communication with the owners was easy and quick, making the stay even more enjoyable. I definitely plan to stay here again when I'm in the area.

vaca in the mountains

My Wife and I enjoyed our stay at the house on the highground. Views were spectacular. We were not familiar with the area so there was some exploring to do when we hit the road. If a traveler has a telescope, this would be an excellent destination. The sky put on quite a show for us most nights.

Sunrise is stunning!

Every morning we were treated to different sunrise! Just gorgeous sitting on deck watching the sun come up, and being surprised by whatever the clouds are offering that day! Also enjoyed New River Trail. We hiked but saw many bicyclists.. will definitely plan on coming back to bicycle the trail!

Such a wonderful view

This was my second time staying here within a year. It's such a cute house that is frozen in time. I really enjoyed seeing the koi fish last fall, but sadly they are no longer there. I would definitely come here again and the new AC was a nice touch since it was in the 80s when we were there. Hopefully some wifi will be the next upgrade to this wonderful place!

Perfect!

The view from this delightful home is awe inspiring. The house is secluded but not remote. The house itself is comfortable and most attractive. You might want to bring disposable plates, glasses, and bowls since those are in short supply although we had enough for two people. I look forward to booking this gem again.

Great moutain cottage

This is an awesome little cottage! The view from the mountain top on the back porch is spectacular. I loved the decor too. It's been updated (floors, granite countertops, bathrooms, etc.) but I loved how they kept the traditional decor. It's very nostalgic, reminds me of my grandmother's house. There is heat in every room, heats up super quick. The owner was also super quick to respond to questions I had. We look forward to going back!

Natural Beauty

My friend and I stayed at Winnie's Retreat to enjoy a couple days of the Galax Old Fiddler's Convention. We were only there for two nights and barely spent any time in the property but the little that we did, it was fantastic. You're on a mountain overlooking the Piedmont and I swear you can see halfway to the ocean on a clear day. The house is roomy and clean with outdoor areas to enjoy and plenty of space for a family or a group of friends. There's no wifi but a very good cell signal from the house if you need to get online in a pinch. The property is very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway so super convenient. A word of caution, though--my friend and I arrived very late at night on the first night and she needed to look at the online map and follow along as we drove because there's a few odd turns--and even with that we took a few wrong ones. The driveway doesn't look like much more than a path so thankfully there's a sign out front so you know you're in the right place. Recommend arriving during daylight hours if you can. When leaving the house, put your location in to your maps app before you drive away as you'll lose cell signal as soon as you move down the driveway and won't get it back for a few miles. This is out in the country--I mean it. We were looking for a view and some peace. We definitely found it here. We're already talking about staying there again next year. Loved it.

Fabulous View

My husband and I stayed over Labor Day weekend. So happy to find this well kept home in a quiet location just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, less then 10 minutes from Blue Ridge Music Center, where we enjoyed the final summer concert. We brought food and had plenty of kitchen amenities for cooking at home. Back Porch was wonderful for day and night relaxing, with beautiful sunrises, entertaining hummingbirds, deer under the crabapple tree, and Milky Way brightly shining in the dark skies. There’s a short blazed trail from side yard to a pretty stream in the woods. We drove 10 minutes to trailhead for nearby Upper Stewart’s Creek Wildlife Management area and hiked both trail branches for an hour or so, the upper one ending at an old primitive graveyard. The view from home’s back porch overlooks this wilderness area (we spotted the house from trail) so will remain undeveloped and quiet. We did our final section bicycle ride of New River Trail from Draper to Allisonia and back, dining for lunch at fun and delicious Draper Mercantile general store. We also visited Chateau Morrisette Vinyard and listened to their live music on Labor Day. Very pleasant home base, comfortable in every way. Be sure to read the interesting bio of the home’s original builder/owner, who must have been a very strong and brilliant lady!

Full mountain experience.

My significant other and I were there for four nights to celebrate my 51’st birthday to both get away from city life and to start our quest in finding our possible retirement location(s). The house was comfortable for us even without air conditioning (didn’t even consider the idea of booking a home with no A/C) The temperatures worked with us since the weather up at 3000 feet is 10+ degrees cooler at least than the valley temps. The breezes up there allowed us to leave windows open the entire time and kept us and the house comfortable around the clock. We had spectacular weather from both temp and conditions. The view is indeed unmatched and Winnie (the original owner) had real “vision” to pick such a secluded but not in any way, isolated spot. The house and it’s belongings had us wondering and talking about her the entire time. We felt like long lost family but with no closure. The kitchen had everything needed to cook (even a crock pot!), we brought our own items and didn’t need to (we crocked it each day so we could just come home and dinner was ready). This was a great place to come and just enjoy nature and a hint of mountain life. Winnie’s retreat was truly a quiet and peaceful get away from the noise of city life.

So much potential…..

Where to begin!? There truly is so much potential to love about this place. The booking was quickly confirmed online, directions were easy to follow, found the property with ease in a beautiful, quiet, remote location. We found our way inside with door code given. We had purchased groceries to cook our supper and enjoy time on the deck the following evening. Upon arrival, the house smelled musty and had an odd door. We proceeded to begin to unpack….however, the fridge was so dirty, there was no way I was going to put my food in there! The fridge had never even been wiped out, let alone cleaned and sanitized! Expired condiments and just overall dirty. Further, the carpets were stained, there was hair and scum around the bath tub, expired canned goods in the cupboards, filthy air vent over stove. I know this is meant as a rustic property, but this was more than rustic; it was dirty! Further, when we arrived it was a chilly night so we turned up the dials in the rooms for the heat….in the middle of the night, my husband unpacked some of his clothes and used them for a blanket…no heat ever came from the registers. In the morning I attempted to start the fireplace (we were freezing!), the fireplace didn’t work either! So we turned on the oven trying to warm up a bit. We were booked for 2 nights, but there was no way we could stay a second night. I know everyone has a different standard for cleanliness but this was FAR from meeting by minimum standard! Having had no heat and, not using the bath/shower or kitchen (due to uncleanlinesses of property), I asked for a refund for both booked nights. The host refused the refund for the one night we stayed there, stating she “respectfully disagreed” about the uncleanliness issues. I sent several pictures to her to show the specifics, in which I did not receive a response to. To end on a positive note, the host quickly agreed to a refund for the second night so we left promptly the next morning and found a place in Blowing Rock. Which we were delighted with. My husband and I have travelled extensively throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Panama, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Italy….this is the first time we have ever left a place due to uncleanliness.

spectacular views!

The owner accommodated our reservation request on very short notice and communicated with us immediately! Check-in was super easy! The house was clean. The view from this home is world-class and stunning! The house is very private yet right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. My husband and I enjoyed the deck and sunroom for coffee, reading, and resting. We took long walks along all the lanes throughout the neighborhood. There is no internet but we did have cell phone service just fine. We couldn't use the gas fireplace as it wasn't operational - but perhaps the owners make it available in the winter - not a big deal. The kitchen has all the essentials (coffee pot, microwave, toaster) plus a crock pot and even a toaster oven! We ate wonderful meals while enjoying the amazing view. However, some of the pots and pans are old and a few need to be replaced. And, I couldn't find a good sized 12 inch skillet. Fortunately, I brought my own for cooking bacon, pancakes, sauteing veggies and potatoes, etc. So, with a few basic cookware upgrades (steak knives, a good vegetable peeler, large cutting board), the kitchen would be everything you need and more! I read the reviews before our stay - one said the beds were comfortable and one said they were not. The 2 queen beds are very firm - so if that is what you like then you are in luck! If you like a softer bed, just bring a mattress topper with you! As for the strong odor mentioned by one reviewer. Yes, we noticed it right away. I am very allergic to chemical fragrances. So, once I located all the floral air freshener things throughout the house, and removed them from the house, opened the windows and aired things out - it was fresh and perfect! And, yes, I replaced them all before we left. A note to the owner - folks with asthma, allergies, and other respiratory issues can get migraines and become very ill due to air fresheners. There are some TV channels to choose from and very limited library of movies...so I would recommend bringing a few movies with you that you'd love to watch! We will definitely be back to enjoy this lovely quaint getaway in grandma's cottage. It is clear that the family cherishes the legacy of their mom/grandma and we thoroughly enjoyed staying in this wonderful home. We will definitely be back for sure! (we'll just bring a mattress topper, a few movies, and a frying pan!) Thanks for a lovely stay!

This was our Mother's dream house. In 1984, she retired and moved from New York to Galax building this beautiful home. We have been coming here for many years of wonderful family gatherings. My Mother had 5 daughters and we all would come here to visit and enjoy the quiet relaxing atmosphere. We would sit on the porch and enjoy the beautiful hummingbirds that would swarm the feeders and trumpet vines. Many long walks have been taken to the stream and back. If you listen carefully you can hear the stream running down the mountain. We miss her greatly but when we come back to "her mountain", it feels like she has been waiting for us to come home and visit.
We hope that you will be able to enjoy this house as much as we have.

What makes this property unique

On a clear day you can see the sky scrapers in Winston-Salem.
Who doesn't enjoy a good thunder cracking rainstorm?
During 4th of July many people in the valley shoot off fire works and you get a birds eye view.
A lovely home to come to and enjoy the annual Fiddlers Convention.
Nothing can be more beautiful then Fall in the Mountains. You can see Interstate 77 many miles away and be glad you are on the mountain and not on interstate 77.
