About this property

Charming, elegant farmhouse near Sarlat with private pool, orchards and gardens.

WELCOME TO GAURENNE: YOUR HOME IN FRANCE

Set in a high meadow in the heart of France’s Périgord Noir region, Gaurenne is a charming farmhouse dating from the early 1700’s. The property is within 15 to 30 minutes of the most famous sites in the Dordogne, and yet it offers a peaceful tranquility that makes sight-seeing a choice but not a necessity. In this beautiful setting, with its views of neighboring hills and hamlets, it is possible for a visitor to remain undisturbed, walking through the property’s 24 acres of meadow and woods, following footpaths through the valley and nearby villages. Next to the house are both fruit and walnut orchards, and the covered stone terrace catches summer breezes and provides a gracious place for outdoor dining and relaxing. There is also a saltwater swimming pool, which functions in summer months.

ABOUT THE HOUSE
A small rural lane climbs through the woods and at the ridge top opens onto a meadow and the three hundred year old Gaurenne. Arranged around a courtyard in the traditional manner of French farms, the buildings of golden limestone are a fine example of Périgordine architecture. The steeply pitched, highly prized “lauze” roofs made of stone slabs are typical of this region and give the local architecture its fairytale quality. Entering the gate, climbing roses, jasmine, and lavender fill the courtyard with fragrance, and the herb garden by the door is intended for your use. The house has been restored in a way that combines contemporary sophistication and rustic authenticity.

The interior includes walls of exposed stone and beamed ceilings. The main floor is comprised of an eat-in kitchen, a living room/dining room, a utility room, and a half-bath. The chef’s kitchen, recently totally remodeled, is of generous size and includes a wonderful Lacanche stove, a dishwasher, espresso maker and all you will need to prepare beautiful meals. From the kitchen table, a lovely stone window looks out into the meadow. The living room is large and includes a comfortable sitting area as well as a long farm table for dining. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and the other with two single beds that can be joined to make a king-sized bed. Both rooms have large, French casement windows, antique armoires, and generous dressers. The bathroom includes a tub and rain shower, a heated towel rack, and a sink set into a tile counter. The WC is separate. The house is equipped with central heating, a washing machine, and high-speed wireless internet access.

OUTDOOR SPACE
Guests arriving at Gaurenne enter a gate leading into a courtyard that is filled with flowers and partially shaded by a plane tree. At the far side of the courtyard, a stone terrace adjacent to the kitchen holds a long teak table and chairs for outdoor dining. A tile roof shelters the terrace, making it a pleasant seating area in the heat of the day. On the north side of the house is a fruit orchard; the fruit is yours for the taking if you happen to be there when it’s ripe. There is also a walnut orchard. On the south side of the house, the swimming pool is hidden from view but is open to the meadow and the hills beyond. Measuring 17′ x 36′, it was just rebuilt and bordered with stones from Burgundy. This is a favorite spot for guests and is a welcome pleasure at the end of a day of sightseeing. Lounge chairs, beach towels and mats are provided, as are kickboards and some water toys for children. Gaurenne’s 24 acres are yours to explore, and the trails that you can pick up on the property can be followed for miles through the countryside, either on foot or on bicycle. The woods below the house are a delightful place to walk, and below them is a completely private valley that makes a wonderful picnic spot. Five minutes away is a village where you will find a post office and a grocery store/bar/café that serves wonderful, inexpensive home cooked meals. There are also two wonderful restaurants just outside of the village. Just as close is a lake with a public beach and tennis courts. Fifteen minutes away, the medieval town of Sarlat has everything you might need, including shops, restaurants, movie theatre, hospital, summer festivals, and, twice a week, a large outdoor market.

THE REGION
Located in Southwestern France, the Dordogne is a region of gentle beauty, renown for its fine cuisine, medieval villages, proud chateaux, and extraordinary examples of prehistoric cave art. Owing to the unique combination of abundant fish and game and of cliffs rising up from the valleys providing safe dwellings in myriad caves and grottos, more traces of man’s presence thousands of years ago have been found here than anywhere else in France.

Gaurenne is situated in the part of the Dordogne known as the Périgord Noir, which offers a lush landscape threaded with meandering rivers and dotted with charming villages. Dense forests alternate with rolling meadows and fields. Although there are towns and sites that attract visitors in summer months, this is a region that is primarily agricultural, with a quiet, unspoiled countryside where the traditional way of life is still very much in evidence.

Nonetheless, you will not lack for activities to fill your days. There are extensive hiking trails, canoe trips on the Dordogne or Vezere rivers, horseback riding, swimming, and tennis, all nearby. There are also numerous chateaux to visit (Beynac and Castelnaud are not to be missed) as well as unique sites like the ruined Chateau de Commarque and the Cabanes de Breuil (an unusual cluster of ancient, round, stone dwellings of unknown origin). The region’s wealth of prehistoric sites is close at hand. The Lascaux caves, Font-de-Gaume, the National Museum of Pre-history at Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, and the Abri de Cap Blanc, with its carved horses, provide a memorable experience. Local outdoor markets offer regional produce and products, with that of Sarlat being one of the most colorful in France. A listing of suggested outings, restaurants, market days, and local summer festivals is provided to help visitors make full use of their stay.

Magical place!
This was our second stay at Gaurenne and it was just as wonderful as the first. The property itself is beautiful with everything that you need. But it is the secluded location that makes the property truly special. There is plenty to do in the area, but we spent our time reading books and enjoying local gastronomy on the terrace while enjoying the view. We ate dinner to the sounds of owls and retired to stargazing. Thank you Judith for sharing your magical home with us.

Exceptional home in a peaceful setting
This property is wonderful in every respect. It is very old with loads of character, but it is also furnished impeccably, so that you will have everything that you need. The property is located in a very peaceful area, with no other houses in sight. This means that you will need to drive to do the shopping, but also means that you won’t hear anything except the sounds of nature. We saw dear, falcons, and bats on the grounds, and loved the stargazing. My favourite part of the day was sitting down on the shaded terrace with some local wine and a book; the children loved the swimming pool in the late afternoon. There is much to do in the local area (canoeing, castles, prehistoric caves, markets), and coming back each day to such a lovely property made our holiday really special. We hope very much to return.

Wow, wow, wow
Alas, I am starting this review with an apology, because this place more positive adjectives than my small mind can come up with. I am not a sycophant and struggle to get excited or inspired by very much - BUT, if you are looking for the most peaceful, tranquil, natural, original, clean, welcoming, home from home feel to your stay in the Dordogne, then this place oozes all of that and more. As soon as we came off the 'main' road and headed up the road through the woods, and through wild flower meadows we knew we were in for something quite special. But, neither my wife, me or my children quite realised how special our stay for the week was going to be. We have been to France on multiple times before, and we are quite pedantic over what we are looking for in a property. It has to be clean, it has to feel comfortable, well decorated, it has to have modern amenities whilst all balanced against the charm of a traditional French farmhouse. This place has that and spades more. We immediately felt relaxed, comfortable, dashed around the house mouths wide open utterly blown away by Gaurenne. The front room is so comfortable to relax in - great lighting, huge dining room table, lots of games for the days when you just cant be bothered to explore and would rather chill. And to be honest, this place was so comfortable, we probably did not explore the area as much as we could. The gardens, the flowers, the birds, the deer and wild boar (yes, they were in the meadow one night just as the sun was setting but no picture unfortunately), sincerely this place is simply stunning. Do not be put off by the pool not being heated, granted we had reservations particularly because the weather was not at its warmest whilst we were there, but the pool was up at 25c most days and whilst there is an initial chill when you get in, the temperature was perfect for us and our children. Its a really decent sized pool. I should write more about the area - Sarlat great city, very pretty, lots of history. Monkey Forest superb for a day out as is canoeing down the Dordogne. We saw loads, but our holiday was not made by the seeing new places, it was made by knowing when we were out, we had the most amazing home to go back to. Thank you Judith we will be back

Even more perfect than we imagined
Our elation upon arrival to gorgeous Gaurenne quickly ceded to feelings of despair at the thought that we would ever have to depart! One is so spoiled for choice in the Périgord Noir with things to see and do, and in the days preceding our stay at Gaurenne we hopped madly from one stunning site to another.  But the gravity of this exquisite place is such that, once we stepped foot on the property, we rarely left! Imagine dining on the covered terrace, the air redolent with the heady scent of honeysuckle and roses, listening to the cicadas’ symphonic serenade ... Imagine lazing beside the lovely grass-encircled, hedge-framed pool, looking up from one’s book to watch the birds flit along the pretty stacked-stone roofs and walls ... Imagine strolling through the meadows laced with umbels of cow parsley and fragrant wild mint, stopping to pluck a peach or apple from a generous tree before exploring the surrounding woods ... Gaurenne is a special place one wants to drink in lustily, to savour its every carefully considered, painterly detail. Judith is an absolutely wonderful host, providing guests with all of the information, amenities, and care one could possibly need. A stay here is worth every penny/pence/centime, and we dream of coming again!

Heart of the Dordogne
We've been to many parts of France before, and my wife used to live in Paris, but we'd never been to la France profonde, two hours drive east of Bordeaux. After a week there, with the duck and the wild-boar jambon, with the sweet little wines, the Bergeracs, rarely imported to the States, and ... wow, after getting to stay in this impeccable 300-year-old house, we are pretty much in love, and can't wait to go back. We just scratched the surface (not literally; heresy) of the 15,000-year-old carvings and paintings in the neighborhood, the hilltop villages a la Tuscany, the general pre-history atmosphere. And one reason we didn't get to all the attractions is that staying in this house beats all. Daily swims in the pool -- it was warm out in early July, though not stifling. Gaurenne and its surrounding vast meadows is the quietest place I have been. No highway white noise in the background. A bucket of mussels for dinner with friends who came to stay with us out beneath the pergola at 10 o'clock with still evening light to spare. Judith is a wonderful hostess. The house could not be more comfortable. Great hiking right out the door. Biggest commotion was a grandmother and grandchild trotting by on a miniature-horse-drawn cart. Writing a note about it, I am only sorry I am not there right now.

Stunningly picturesque & peaceful
Our family of four, including two twenty-something children, had a lovely time at this unique property. The remote countryside location and the beautifully landscaped grounds create a truly magical setting . Many of our pleasantest memories are of relaxing by the pool listening to the birds in the late afternoon, or enjoying a family dinner on the outdoor terrace as the sun set. The guest house is comfortable and charming, with tasteful decor that suits the setting, and a pleasant kitchen in which we cooked several meals. This is of course a great region for food and there are numerous farm markets in the various nearby towns and villages. The owner was a wonderful host from afar, offering friendly tips and advice on our stay. When we unexpectedly needed a FedEx package sent and asked if finding the house was difficult for delivery services, she promptly emailed directions to the house in French! The region includes some notable attractions, such as Lascaux and other prehistoric cave art sites, which we enjoyed, as well as numerous chateaux and other picturesque historic buildings. It is also just lovely countryside for driving around and eating out. A friend who has stayed at Gaurenne recommended it to us and we have already recommended it to others. I just hope it's free next time we want to come back!

Gorgeous French Farmhouse
It’s hard to believe that a week has passed since we returned to the States. I’ve been swamped since getting back to work but each day aware that I want to tell you what an exceptional and wonderful time Cindy and I had at Guarenne. As I think I may have said, I’d wanted for many years to spend time in the Dordogne and imagined a beautiful country setting as a place to stay. Unlike the usual problem set up by other idealized and long imagined events, this one was everything we’d hoped it would be and more! The house, the property and the widely surrounding countryside was perfect and each day provided something new and special to explore. From traditional village markets to historic chateaux to unforgettable drives along the Dordogne, we’re still treasuring every day of our visit. I hope we’ll have the opportunity to return in the future. Getting to know you was an added bonus for us. We felt very welcomed and that immediately out of nowhere, we suddenly had a friend in the French countryside. The renovations on the property were beautiful updates that preserved the charm and classic beauty of the house and property. And your tips on nearby sites and activities invariably hit the mark and enhanced our stay.

Perfect, idyllic setting
Once again, we're grateful to stay in this beautiful house in this perfect, idyllic setting. When we stayed here for a week seven years ago, we promised ourselves that we would come back and spend more time. This two week visit has allowed us to really slow down and absorb the rhythms of Gaurenne. We're so glad we did. It’s difficult to describe the tranquility of staying in this 18th century farmhouse. It’s surrounded by fields that are surround by woods in the peaceful Périgord country. There is a feeling of openness and privacy at the same time. The landscaping, orchards, the courtyard, and gardens are stunning without being overdone. It all feels in balance with the land and the house. The historic stonework of the house is gorgeous and the interior renovations are incredibly tasteful. You have all of the modern conveniences while taking a break from the busyness of contemporary life. Judith provides a guidebook that is extraordinarily helpful. It compiles her knowledge, along with the tips from previous guests, for everything you need including nearby farmers markets (and their daily schedules), bakeries, grocery stores, restaurants, loads of practical information as well as recommend sites including the prehistoric caves with Cro-Magnon art. We had excellent dinners in the neighboring village of Marquay, nearby Tamnies, and la Ferme du Brusquand. Gaurenne made for an ideal vacation. We hope that we don’t wait another seven years to return.

A Wonderful Return Visit
We spent a week at Gaurenne 16 years ago when our daughter was a teenager. It was a wonderful week and we always intended to return. We finally did and it was even more enjoyable. The house is the countryside.. you won't see a neighbor, but it is twenty minutes to Sarlat which has all services you will need. It is in the middle of many locations in the Dordogne you will want to visit on day trips. The house is a stone farmhouse with lovely outdoor spaces. The bathrooms were redone since our visit and many other improvements were made. All updates were made tastefully and in keeping with the atmosphere of the house. The house is very well equipped and renting it from Judith was a breeze. She is very responsive to all questions and concerns. Many rentals in France come completely bare bones without any supplies. This house had many items on hand that you would need during your stay , but it might not be as completely equipped as a luxury rental in other parts of the world. Just check with Judith as to what you might need to pick up on your way in to avoid multiple trips to the store. We had a great stay this time and I hope it doesn't take another 16 years to get back

Ideal location and property
This is an ideal spot from which to visit the many attractions of the Dordogne – or just relax and enjoy the area around the property and the on-site swimming pool, terrace, walking trails and lovely views. The house and property are beautiful inside and out. Amazing esthetics and comfort. The owner has thought of everything. This was our first sightseeing in the Dordogne, and we were delighted to find so many different places to visit and the way in which they welcome tourists. The people we met were very friendly and helpful. One of us lives in rural southern New Hampshire, the other in New York, and it suited us both! One of the best vacations ever.

La Gaurenne - A Dordogne farmhouse
My wife and I and my wife’s sister spent a week at La Gaurenne in September 2016. The farmhouse, quietly situated in a hill-top meadow, is simply beautiful inside and out – comfortably furnished inside, and outside a lovely private garden, orchards and its own swimming pool. The ambience is fully in keeping with the Dordogne, and the location, despite its apparent isolation, provides ready access to local markets, villages, farms and hiking trails. Moreover La Gaurenne is ideally located for those wishing to explore the extraordinary pre-historic cave art found throughout the region – indeed several of the most famous caves are almost on the doorstep! La Gaurenne offers amazing peace and quiet in the heart of the Perigord Noir, otherwise a very busy and popular tourist area, renowned as one of the most scenically beautiful France has to offer.

Perfect vacation spot in the Dordogne
Gaurenne is a beautiful, comfortable stone cottage in a lovely meadow setting. There is history in its old stones, yet it has all the modern conveniences one requires. We spent two weeks there in late August and early September using Gaurenne as our home base for exploring the Dordogne. Farmers markets, caves, prehistoric sites and lovely villages are all close by as are excellent restaurants. After a day of touring, the swimming pool was a welcome respite. At the farmers markets we found bread, vegetables, fruit, wine, cheese and take-away chicken, ham and potatoes. We also dined in restaurants in nearby Marquay, Tamnies and Les Ezyies. Driving up the hill to Gaurenne and turning left out of the woods into the sunlit meadow with the house ahead on the right will always be a sweet memory.

A stunning, private sanctuary in the hills of Sarlat
When the Bruno Chief of Police mystery series by Martin Walker (set in nearby Le Bugue) brought us to this area of France, I determined to find a family friendly lodging with a pool. Narrowing the search to Gaurenne was a very lengthy process since there are innumerable gites in the Dordogne. But a decision was made based on the proximity of this sanctuary to Sarlat, Les Elyses, Lascaux II, Rocamadour, Roque de Christophe etc. We wanted a spot with a pool, and the stunning rock buildings of Gaurenne depicted on the VBRO site were unsurpassed by other advertised gites. This lodging is so serene, with local cows being the nearest neighbours. But Gaurenne is located smack in the middle of the most desirable sites in the region. On the property is stunning and we couldn't have been more pleased with our decision.

Dreamy, perfect, serene, the only painful part is leaving
My husband and I stayed at Judith's incredible, impeccable, peaceful and lovely farmhouse last summer, and we are coming back this summer, and hope to return again and again. The place, its location, and the care that has been put into restoring this amazing and very old and grand farmhouse makes the experience of staying there both restorative and a real revelation. The house is on its own high rural plot of farmland with charming little country lanes extending along a ridge where you can walk and see the most amazing views. The countryside here is very soft, rolling, idyllic. The house and its fairly vast grounds are perfectly maintained by someone with very deep knowledge of the area and of the farming and ecology and culinary traditions of this part of Dordogne. Guarenne is an exquisite place. Being there inspires a desire to be careful, to tread lightly, and to return, to return, to return! We walked all over. Slept peacefully with the screened windows wide open. Swam in the beautiful and extremely private pool. Ate on the covered terrace, after walking to the little grocery store in the town up the hill. Guarenne is something very special. I actually was reluctant to leave a review, after staying last summer, because I feared we would never get another reservation. Indeed, we had to reserve early for this next summer. This house is really the jackpot in Dordogne, and I can't believe our luck in having discovered it. You will love it and not be sorry. It's even more incredible than the pictures suggest. I can't wait to go back.

Fred - Gaurenne J'adore !
Judith put her heart into this 300 year-old house. Each detail is chosen with simple elegance and the desire to create an easy, relaxed and warm environment. The colors of the house reflect the quality of the materials, floor to ceiling, each detail selected to create a sense of well-being. It’s just a few steps to the pool, surrounded by fields and beyond the trees of Gaurenne’s woods. With a little luck, the cows will also be around... If the desire takes hold to pass from the fields to the greens, the Sarlat golf course is a few minutes away, traveling along beautiful country roads. To fall asleep in Gaurenne is the height of peace. Linen sheets, comfortable beds, the light of stars and the nighttime silence, make you want to bury yourself under the quilt for a long time. To awake is even more magical, morning toast from fresh country bread as the starting point for unforgettable days. And to leave is to want to return.

Spectacular farmhouse in Perigord Noir region
We have been to the Paris area many times but not to Southwest France. We read about Judith’s place in The New York Review of Books and decided it was exactly what we were looking for. And are we glad we did. Serenity, seclusion, breathtaking beauty, history, great food and last but not least, Judith’s spectacular Gaurenne. Gaurenne is more beautiful than even the photos indicate and at a very reasonable price. No expense has been spared to make a visitor feel at home-from the sumptuous and fully equipped guesthouse to the pool, gazebo, orchards and manicured grounds. Throw away the guidebooks—they are not needed here as Judith’s extensive knowledge and recommendations as to the Perigord Noir as to markets, sights, dining and history are all provided. Book at least a week at Gaurenne; you will be glad you did. We will be going back.

Fabulous Holiday!
We were 2 couples in this perfect farmhouse on a hilltop, in the middle of a gorgeous landscape. The property is very close to the famous market of Sarlat, where we loved to wander in the small streets of this medieval town. We were there in June when everything was in flower and warm days allowed us to swim in the beautiful pool. In short, we had a fabulous, relaxing holiday. One of the best we’ve ever had!

WOW - What a GREAT house & vacation!
We (family of 4) stayed for 1 week in August 2013. The owner was very helpful and very easy to deal with. The house and pool are even more beautiful and amazing then the pictures show. Very peaceful property yet within easy access to local villages - that have fantastic outdoor markets and restaurants! The property was very clean and well presented upon our arrival. This was our first time to the Dordogne region and it will not be our last...we can't wait to return! Lots of activities (prehistoric caves, local markets, kayaking Dordogne River, hikes, exploring local villages) within easy access of this property. We have rented many VRBO properties and this was one of the easiest transactions....and most memorable house/vacation.
