Great spot to unwind and spend quality time with family!

This was our 28th year at Bald Head and the second time we have stayed in this home. The new owners were just as great to work with as the previous owners!

Quiet, well-maintained

Keewatin is a peaceful getaway. We visited in the fall, but it's probably even better in the summer, when you need to escape the heat and humidity. Tucked in the forest at the end of a cul de sac, this house is well-maintained and brightly decorated. I would definitely return for a week in the summer or a weekend in the off-season!

Irish Blessing

Older home in a cul-de-sac which was great with a 4 year old and dogs. Furnishings were neat and clean. There were startup supplies for cooking which were great since we got in after the market closed. We were in a great location on the island. Golf carts worked fine. The floors (wood and tile) were perfect for dogs and little boys. We had a marvelous time!

First time visit to BHI

Irish Blessing was truly that! Our first family vacation in 6 years, our stay at this property was perfect. Positives included: dog friendly, secluded location, two golf carts, comfy beds, stocked kitchen, two porches, great location near beaches, market and marina, quick responding hosts and so much more! Our only “con” is that bugs abound in the woods — not so much in the house but out front and in the garage. But if I was a bug, that’s where I would want to live too! Overall, it was wonderful. We are already planning our trip for next summer!

This is a wonderful rental property on BHI. There are screened in porches on each level, all of the rooms are very comfortable and well furnished. The reverse floor plan with the living area on the third floor was great. It was a large open room with forest views which provided us with a glimpse of some deer passing through. The location is at the end of a cul de sac and is very quiet. The owners provided lots of little extras like games, pet blankets and bowls, and starter toiletries. The best part is that our fur babies got to go and enjoy this vacation with us! Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your property! We highly recommend it to others!

Wonderful renovated home in the maritime forest

We were the first renters in this newly renovated home in the maritime forest on BHI. This is our third rental on the island and was by far the best. The house was beautifully appointed and the owners have paid great attention to detail, leaving us lots of information about how things work and where various items (like beach towels!) can be found. The kitchen is very well-stocked and shelves are labelled so you can easily remember where to put everything back. Beds are very comfortable. We loved having access to the kayaks and the golf carts were in great shape. Also, there are beach toys, fishing poles, crabbing nets, beach chairs and towels- it meant we didn't have to bring much with us to have a fun vacation. Fantastic stay and would definitely return to this home. Owners were very communicative and easy to work with.

Clean, very well equipped kitchen, great porches!

Can't say enough wonderful things about the owners! They always responded quickly and were so accommodating when I asked to change our dates after contract was done.:) The house was clean, soft (and lots of!!) linens, kitchen had everything we needed and more. They had 2 golf carts- the 6 seater appeared new and we took that everywhere. They also had a big bucket of toys that proved lifesaver for our kids during one rainy day. We never even used our own sand toys because they had sand toys ready to go by the golf carts. We also enjoyed using the bikes that were available. No complaints- whatsoever! Thanks again!!!

Fun Family stay over the Fourth of July

We were not sure if we were going to make it to Bald Head this year. We decided we could late and lucked into renting this house. It has been recently refreshed and redone, and is one of the best appointed houses we have rented on the island. The house came with everything renters needed including beach chairs, good running carts, lots of pots and pans (and cutting boards), and beach towels. We used the three kayaks which came with the house multiple times throughout the week. The forest location was close to the alligator pond (we call him George), the market, and the public creek access. It also provided lots of privacy and times to check out the nightlife on the island including deer, toads, frogs, and opossums. The house was exactly as the owners had mentioned, and the owners were very communicative during the rentals. We would definitely rent from them again.

Secluded hideaway

This renovated house is perfect for two couples with kids (who get along). Two bedrooms with king size beds and two other bedrooms: one with two single beds, and the other with a single and an oversized bunk bed. The bedrooms are on the middle floor with two full baths, while the open living space (kitchen/dining/family area) is on the third level with another full bath. The garage, on the lower level, contains 4-5 bikes, kayak paddles/PFD's, and two golf carts - one 4-seater and one 6-seater. You'll need these to get around the island, since no vehicles are allowed (other than service and emergency equipment). I personally appreciated this, since it makes all the lanes around the island more bike- and runner-friendly, and lends a much slower-paced lifestyle to Bald Head Island. That being said, you can get anywhere on the island within a matter of minutes at 18 mph on a golf cart. The beaches are broad and flat, with a very gradual slope into the surf. They are uncrowded (but also unguarded) and accessed at multiple points from west to east via boardwalks over the dunes, in order to prevent damage to the fragile seagrass. If you want a swimming pool, that's available at the Bald Head Island Club, for which a temporary guest membership is available through the owners' link. The BHI Club also has an 18-hole golf course (links style), visible behind the house from the wraparound deck. Back at Keewatin House, there's a washer and dryer on the middle level for washing out beach towels (provided by the owners), swimsuits and other beachwear. Much of the island is held in conservancy and exists in wetlands or coastal forest. It is NOT commercialized, and dining options are limited, which means that you'll likely be eating in as often as not. There IS a small, but full-service supermarket in the island center, but prices are higher than on the mainland due to increased transportation costs (all freight, including your luggage, comes across by ferry and then gets delivered to your location by tram). Organized vacationers, therefore, will want to bring non-perishables across in plastic bins, or you can order your groceries from the Maritime Market in advance and they'll stock your fridge prior to your arrival. The bottom line: Keewatin House is comfortable, well-equipped, well-suited to two active families. While not overly spacious (if all nine beds are occupied), there's plenty of room for what will be a vacation largely spent outdoors.

Wouldn’t stay again

Spiders everywhere!!! Even inside screen porch. Multiple issues with both golf carts. Owner who didn’t believe us when she finally responded, insisting it was our fault for not plugging carts in. Multiple times we were stranded and had to walk and push carts home. Dangerous situation. Even when they were working by day 3 of 3 we had to plan short trips only and it impacted our plans.

We had a lovely time except for all the bugs; there were large roaches everywhere. The windows were dirty, but the view would have been good if we had been able to see out.

Owner does not respond to anything

This house is fine. We had young kids with us and didn’t need anything fancy. When we got to the island it was pouring down rain and the house was not unlocked like it was supposed to be. Luckily we were able to find the garage unlocked and shimmy between the golf carts to gain access to the house. I don’t know what we would have done if the garage wasn’t open bc the owner is completely non responsive. There were dead cockroaches and bugs on the floor and in the baths and the floors didn’t feel clean at all. I sent a message to the owner about it and never got a response. I actually sent many messages to the owner over the last 6 months to inquire about the BHI club. I never once got a reply. Both golf carts had problems. The smaller one had brakes so sensitive that if you braked like you normally would the cart would screech to a halt and jerk you forward. The larger golf cart is extremely hard to turn and the alignment is way off. The door to the second floor porch is also broken. We had a great time despite the total lack of communication with the owner. I would not stay here again though. The house felt unclean.

Awsome rental

We had a great stay at the "Tree House". The kitchen was stocked nicely . The bedrooms great for our family including our 2 1/2 year old grandson. Location on cul de sac was very quiet. We are coming to Bald Head Island for the last 8 years and this was the best. Thank you Amy and John for sharing your house with us.

You won’t regret staying here

This was our first time to BHI, and it definitely will not be our last. The house was amazing - the screened in porch on the top floor was where we spent most of time when it rained…and again after dinners… The house had everything to make you feel at home…kitchen essentials and bathroom necessities. The road to the house was dreamy with the tree canopy and it truly felt like a dream. I’m still shocked this gem is right here in NC. Such a great stay. The beaches are endless and there’s something for everyone. Book the trip. You won’t regret it.

Awful Experience at Cockroach House

I rented a vacation home on Bald Head Island, North Carolina the week of July 23-30, 2021. My two teen kids each invited a friend to join us for the week. Below are portions of text messages I sent to the owner during the course of our stay and shortly after our stay (NOTE: this format on VRBO does not allow me to submit the several pictures I took that show many of the problems we encountered). ——————- From Renter to Owner: …We have killed a handful of cockroaches today…. (NOTE: the above message included other items, but it is noteworthy to mention that the homeowner NEVER apologized about the cockroaches, nor did she ever send anyone to the home to address the cockroach problem, nor did she ever mention the cockroach problem in any of her responses to my text messages.) ——————- From Renter to Owner: …The 7-speed bike… chain is no good… It's a nice bike. I wish we could use it. (NOTE: in the owner’s reply concerning the bike, she made no effort to get someone to fix the bike so we could use it nor did she apologize about it.) ———————— From Renter to Owner: …Attached is a pic of the mess in the bottom of your garbage can corral… (Note: the mess looked REALLY gross and the smell was putrid. The owner never apologized about the mess and she never sent anyone to clean up the mess during our stay). —————— From Renter to Owner: … the first floor entryway… (and) the garage floor are littered with dead cockroach nymphs…The upholstered seats of the dining room chairs are filthy…. (I sent pics of these two problems to the owner. She never apologized about them and never sent anyone to address these problems during our stay). —————— From Renter to Owner: My daughter's friend (our guest) just told me a cockroach crawled across her stomach while she was in bed last night. She told me she saw it as well. I hope we can come to an agreement on a reasonable refund of a portion of our rental fee. (NOTE: NO reply yet from owner). —————— From Renter to Owner: …your house needs a… power wash (including) the concrete pad in front of the front door… (NOTE: I sent owner pics of green stuff growing on exterior siding and windows. I again asked the owner for a comp/partial refund. No reply yet). I have stayed in vacation homes for over 20 years and this house was by far the most fraught with problems for which the owner never apologized and never attempted to resolve during our stay. It was a truly AWFUL experience.

Loved the "treehouse"

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Bald Head, this was our first trip to the island. We loved the house, it was perfect for our needs. The 3rd floor common area did feel like a treehouse. The big screened in porches were a treat as well. We didn’t want to leave. The house is located on a quite cul-de-sac with lots of shade. Many details were provided to ensure we had all we needed. The kitchen was well stocked, and we left things behind for future guests. We used a big tote for kitchen essentials brought from home which worked smoothly on the ferry. The market had all the other basics we could need. There weren’t many places on the island to eat so we cooked more than we expected. Things on the island are simple in that regard. Communication with the owner before our trip was helpful and she answered questions we had. Unfortunately, two things came up during our stay where we needed help and didn’t hear back. There are no instructions for the TV and the Roku did not appear compatible with the TV. My husband worked on it for a while. I’ve never known him not to problem solve a TV set up. We reached out to the homeowner but didn’t hear back. He finally hooked up his laptop and we streamed from there. We also had significant issues with the BHI Club. We paid $500 and had very little access. If we played golf or tennis maybe it would have been a different experience. But pool reservations were only working in person and it was a tremendous hassle for what should have been a relaxing week. Since guest membership at the club is through the homeowner, we reached out hoping for advice or suggestions, but didn’t hear back. We understood covid put some limitations on utilizing the club, but members did not need reservations; even Shoals, the other club on the island, no longer requires pool reservations for guest members. We made it the pool three times and one dinner at the BHI club for two of us. It was a big disappointment in our trip. Since homes determine access to clubs and guest membership, we likely won’t rent this home again. But otherwise, we very much enjoyed our stay. As a side note, if visiting the island for the first time during high summer season, be sure to book things far in advance—ferry tram service, activities through BHI Conservancy, tours, etc. Also, public beach access is really easy as there are several entry points. No showers or bathrooms that we saw though. When you get to the ferry, grab a few extra maps to have on hand.

We had a lovely time staying on the island and enjoyed some much needed porch time in the trees. I enjoyed having my morning coffee on the porch listening to the birds and the trees. It was in a great location and close to everything while still feeling very secluded. Can't wait to visit again!

Great family time at Keewatin House!

Our family had a wonderful week at Keewatin House. The rooms were spacious and well-appointed with everything we needed. We especially appreciated the 2 golf carts and the Friday to Friday rental. It was amazing to avoid the crazy-busy Saturday travel challenges at BHI. We enjoyed the woods location and saw two beautiful bucks below the screened-in porch as well as four does just down the street. Dining on the screened-in porch became our routine for breakfast and dinner. The owners were friendly and easy to work with. We had an outstanding week of sun. sand, waves, family, fun, and great food.
