About this property
Spillenberg House, in the heritage gem of Levoca. Whole property rental.
A delightful palazzo situated in the heart of a beautiful UNESCO walled town, with all the facilities of a small town but only minutes walk from unspoilt countryside. Yearning for a safe escape? There is a direct flight from London Luton to Poprad (25mins drive from Levoca) operated by the budget airline Wizzair. This calm, natural paradise and retreat to unwind is only 2.5 hours (travel time) from London. Most facilities and sights are less than 30 minutes drive and hire cars can be easily arranged from ca 140Eur/week.
This stunning medieval/renaissance town is surrounded by National Parks (the Tatra mountains, Levoca Mountains and Slovak Paradise) and glorious warm summers (25-35c) make this perfect hiking and cycling country. Be adventurous, try something new, explore this area and you will not be disappointed.
During the summer there are various summer craft fetes, cultural shows and a wealth of historical and cultural artifacts to visit. The town is the site of a significant Roman Catholic Pilgrimage (ca 500000 plus) every first weekend in Jun and is linked by UNESCO to Spis Castle (10 min drive) the largest castle in central Europe. In October the town host the Classical Musical Assembly 'Levoca Indian Summer', with performances from top classical musicians from across Europe.
In the winter, the town is located in the center of many ski resorts and the runs are relatively 'empty' when compared to the crowded Alps (no 30 minute queues). The local town slopes (black, red, blue, runs with night skiing) is only a 5 minute drive. Ruzomberok and Tatras mountain ski facilities are also just a very short drive away. Given the location in central Europe, snow conditions are stable and last until mid Apr.
Historically, Spillenberg House (Est ca 1240) gained it's name from the physicians to the Hungarian monarchy from the 1500 to 1700s, who established their ancestral home in the building. Redesigned in the Renaissance style in 1550, this delightful and recently renovated (2010) home, has all the requirements you need to ensure you have a welcoming, safe retreat after a hard day travelling, exploring, hiking, cycling or skiing.

About the host
Hosted by Steve Mellor

I am English but I have decided to put my roots down in Slovakia as it is a beautiful country with unspoiled countryside and a vivid and active folk culture. I enjoy skiing in the winter, hiking in the summer, art, music and culture so decided that in the longer term, Levoca will be my home.
Why they chose this property
I have been slowly renovating Spillenberg house since 2004, and the old building has require extensive structural overhaul all of which had to be done sensitively given the buildings national cultural and world heritage status. Perhaps not particularly hard nosed from a business perspective, I do not profit from your stay. As the project remains in fruition, all of your rental funds are used directly for the properties upkeep or further renovation.
This glorious building is a continuing labour of love. The refurbishment will be my enduring legacy to the kind people of Levoca and Slovakia.

What makes this property unique
I speak basic/functional Slovakian and having been involved with the town and its people for over 10 years I have a network of contacts who may be able to enhance your holiday experience (horse riding, ski instruction, tour guiding) or more humbly, deal with any immediate concerns around the property.
