About this property

Peaceful, Large, Smoky Mountain View Log Home. Nestled in a quiet cove.

Our 70-acre private cove opens to a small rolling pasture enclosed by a dense natural forest. Skinner Spring Cove is a registered Tree Farm with the North Carolina Division of Forestry. Miles of logging paths traverse the property allowing guests to leisurely explore the natural habitat.
The deck faces The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with sunsets that shine behind Clingmans Dome in the distance.
Built in historic Thomas Valley, the Peacock Family Lodge makes a modern day return to our early American roots. Whole log construction and furnishings brought from our grandfather's Pennsylvania farm, the atmosphere of this rustic log house is one of simplicity and authenticity. The great room features scissor beams that vault high overhead and an immense stone hearth. It is a warm and welcoming lodge.

Wedding Weekend

This cabin was a perfect compliment for my daughter’s wedding at the Peacock Reserve. The cabin was roomy, comfy and a splendid place steeped in history. The antique furniture and artifacts were spectacular.

Blended family trip

We had a wonderful stay at the Peacock family lodge. There was plenty of room for all eight of us to spread out and have a space of our own. The lodge had lots of character and was very clean. Location was perfect with a short drive to all sorts of activities. I will definitely look for availability due our next trip to this area.

Beautiful accomodations and location

Cabin was loaded with beautiful antique furniture. Well maintained, comfortable beds & new well equipped kitchen. Expansive view from the deck, complete with really comfortable seating and a new grill. Amenities and linens where excellent. Stone drive in would not be suitable for touring motorcycles, we did make it thanks to the amazing property manager. Many thanks for all her help and hospitality!

Great old log cabin

We had a lovely week in Skinner Sring Cove. The cabin is huge, and it has a wonderful living room where you can enjoy family gathering. It is in the middle of the woods, but with a terrace oriented to a clear from where you can enjoy awesome sunsets. Do not miss a walk around the house to watch the amazing fireflies that makes the place somehow magical. The location is perfect if you want to do south Smoky Mountain National Park hikes, A lot of river and lake activities too, Becky and Ann where all the time reachable and helpful. 5* for the house, the owner, the caretaker and the experience.

Graduation Adventure!

When my son graduated from high school this past June, all he wanted was to see the Great Smokey Mountains, so I surprised him with this getaway. He, along with a few buddies and two Dads, had the best time! Not only is the whole area of the Great Smokey Mountains breathtaking, but the cabin was PERFECT! The rooms were spacious, beautifully decorated, well maintained, house well stocked with the basics and the owner was wonderful to communicate with. It was an amazing trip and one the boys will never forget! Thank you again!!!!

Incredible stay

From start to finish, this was a wonderful experience. Ann was very accommodating and quick to answer any questions or concerns. The property is breathtaking in and of itself, but upon entering the home, it was so much more than I could have imagined! Beautifully decorated, well appointed in every aspect, so many special touches and so very comfortable. It felt like coming home. The caretaker, Becky, was helpful, very kind and patient with all our questions. We enjoyed every moment of our stay and made some wonderful memories! We are trying to make plans to return to this little piece of heaven, as soon as possible!

Polar Express

We stayed here because we wanted to be close to the Polar Express at Byron City. The location was great. In fact, our drive to Byron City Polar express from the house, literally passed right by the Santa Clause destination, which then afforded us a second look, which was a real treasure to the children. The house is on top of the mountain and presented us with great views, exactly as the pictures on the listing described. We spoke to Ann, communication was great. We would definitely stay there again.

Daughters Wedding

Our daughter got married at The Parker Mill so the location was great for driving back and forth on Friday and Saturday. However, I was a little disappointed to find out that the description of the property was not accurate to my specifications. I was expecting the "70 acre private cove" to be... well private. The property has a keeper on site. Like 30 yards away. Whoever did the pictures did a great job cropping the house out of the shots. Overall, the house was great!

My husband and I own our own custom design and fabrication business in Raleigh, NC: Eidolon Designs, Inc. You can learn more about us by visiting www.eidolondesigns.com. I am also a sculptor, planning to return to this focus once I retire. I have two brothers, Bob and Steve. Bob is a retired Episcopal Priest living in St. Augustine, FL. Steve is a retired builder, founder of Marco Bay in Lakeland, FL. Steve now resides in Jacksonville, FL. as well as Whittier, NC where he building a mountain destination event/rental venue, Peacock Reserve, on 10 acres adjacent to our 70 acre cove.

Why they chose this property

Skinner Spring Cove is hidden among the folds of the N.C. hills. It is named honoring our our grandfather, Robert Skinner. Born in Nova Scotia, Grandad migrated to New England, then New York City where he established his own construction company in early 1900. His hobby and love for 50 years, was the farm he purchased at a Pennsylvania auction just prior to the Great Depression. An 1843 stone farmhouse, barn and windmill graced the property and required restoration, while the 60 surrounding acres became fields of wheat, corn, barley, and cattle. Our Pennsylvania farm was reclaimed by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1976 for a water reservoir.

Grandad's greatest gift to his daughter, our mother, June Peacock, was a reverence for the land. Losing the farm to the Blue Lake Water Reservoir in 1976, our mother reinvested in this property in Whittier, North Carolina. For 44+ years this home and this property has been our family gathering place as well as mother's summer home. Mother passed away at the age of 98 in 2019. My brothers and I have chosen to carry on the lineage of our grandfather and our mother by sharing this gift of their heritage with others, while continuing to upkeep and enjoy it as our retreat.

What makes this property unique

70 acres of secluded peacefulness. Within easy reach (8 miles or so) from Bryson City (Deep Creek, Smoky Mountain Railway, shopping, dining), Sylva & Cullowhee (shopping, dining, Western Carolina Univ), and Cherokee (entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Harrod's Casino, Unto These Hill Theater and the Cherokee Museum). 20 miles from Waynesville (shopping, dining, golf, Barber's Orchard). 1 hour from Asheville. 1.5 hrs to Dollywood and Gatlinburg. 15 miles to the Nantahala River (rafting, horseback riding), and 1 hour to the Ocoee River. The Sequoyah National Golf Club is in Whittier, as is the best hardware store in the area, Oxfords (!).

Our caretaker lives in the smaller cabin on the property. She was born and raised in Bryson, and is capable of so many things and knows everyone in the valley. She is available to be helpful if needed, but never intrusive. She is very respectful of the privacy of our guests.

We have information for the many opportunities in the area in the lodge.
