About this property
Birds in the Bush: Eco-living in a Kenyan Home
Situated on 50 acres, 1 kilometer in from the road to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, our open design 2 bedroom, 1 bath home is completely off the grid. The main bedroom has a longer than usual king sized pili-pili bed hand made on Lamu Island off the east coast of Kenya. The guest bedroom has a double bed. between the bedrooms is the bathroom with a shower/tub, toilet and sink.
The house is an open plan so when you walk the front door you face the fireplace with the kitchen in one corner with utensils, dishes and a propane stove. We buy fresh from the local market that is a bustling, colorful event, or buy from the supermarket in the main town. We don't have a refrigerator but keep food fresh in a cooler for a short periods of time.
On the small veranda in front of the house is a lovely western view of the blue hills beyond and dazzling sunsets at dusk where you can take your tea and listen to the evening sounds. We sit on top of the hill so the weather is always good and there is usually a breeze.
Entertainment, when available, is our neighbor group of Maasai Warriors led by Sonkoi around a campfire under the brilliant stars, hearing the sounds of hyenas in the distance. Our warriors mostly speak English, love performing and telling tales about the Maasai culture we are a part of.
We provide a continental breakfast and tea and coffee are available in the mornings. You can order food ahead of time for lunch or dinner at an additional reasonable cost.
We are located in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve buffer zone and although most of the land is now fenced in, a walk to the top of the nearby hill with Sonkoi will give you an amazing panoramic view of the area.
We have tours to the nearby conservancies and National Reserve and offer an unusual 2 day experience taking part in the local culture that includes the milking ceremony, bleeding cattle for blood (still a mainstay for the elders and babies) a safari walk, visiting a local school and spending the night outdoors at an Ol Pul. Sonkoi will tell you more and you can participate or not according to your comfort level!
Our place is great for bird-watching, hiking and camping. It is simple, environment-friendly and peaceful, but not far from most anything you would need or want.
We can pick you up in Nairobi or Narok, depending on your circumstances. Let Sonkoi know in advance for directions because the main road to the Mara Reserve has just been redone and the road to our place is not obvious.
We love having guests and our primary commitments are to your safety and your well-being.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. Kenyans are happy to please!!!
