About this property

'We Loved This Romantic Getaway for Two !' - Testimonial.

This rustic wooden mountain cabin is situated next to a forest, in a secluded spot away from the main house, on a 3.5 acre farm. At an elevation of 2,100 feet, it avoids the summer heat at sea level ('Cool and peaceful..' - Teri), yet is close to Kealakekua Bay (5 miles), kayaking, horse-riding, the Captain Cook Monument, Place of Refuge, and wonderful snorkeling. Ten minutes south is a small shopping center, with supermarket, Chinese restaurant, sandwich shop, bagel shop, pizza restaurant, etc. Three miles north is Kainaliu Town, with theater/cinema, Blue Ginger Gallery, clothing stores and other quaint places. One of the finest restaurants in West Hawaii (Keei Café) is less than 15 minutes away, and there are other lovely breakfast, lunch, dinner places and coffee shops nearby. From the cabin, a short walk across the property and along private paths through coffee fields leads you down a road that takes you through natural Hawaiian flora.

The 760 square feet cabin consists of a living-room, sleeping loft, bathroom, and well-equipped Hawaiian-style lanai kitchen with screens that look into the forest ('The forest is full of birdsong' - Claudia & Chan). A redwood deck is situated under the kukui and macadamia nut trees, and has a Polynesian gazebo. A charcoal barbecue ('An evening barbeque and wine on the deck - perfect' - Barbara & John) stands nearby. The cabin itself is a single wall structure built from exterior plywood. It does not have sheet rock and, like other Hawaiian-built cabins and coffee shacks, the plywood constitutes the inner and outer walls. Windows are aluminum and glass. The kitchen windows are wood, glass and screen, allowing for excellent ventilation.

The farm has three beloved and gentle dogs, three cats, sheep, and chickens. The farm critters are kept in an area at the upper south end of the farm, and the cabin is at the lower north end, some distance from them.

Guests will find fresh farm eggs, homemade bread, a fruit basket, Kona coffee, and other goodies to get them started.

Also worth noting - Jeffrey is an enthusiastic table tennis player. There are four clubs on the Big Island so if you play, bring your equipment!

Generally our guests' feedback is that the cabin is a comfortable place to hang out, read, watch movies and just unwind, or a cool base to return to after swimming, snorkeling and exploring the warmer locations elsewhere.

The proximity of the cabin to the forest means that there are a variety of forest sounds that can be heard - lots of birds in the morning, and tree frogs at night (especially in the wet summer months). As in any woodland setting, nature makes itself known!

We really enjoyed the bungalow and setting, as well as the amiable host and hostess. Would return in a heartbeat. Our expectations were exceeded. Birds, flowers, fruit trees and froggies. We slept well every night to the melodies of Paradise.

Wonderful rural cottage

Lovely stay at the cottage surrounded by nature. Enjoyed being serenaded to sleep by the frogs and waking up to the roosters. Appreciated the well stocked kitchen, the fruit, bread, eggs and milk were definitely a cost savings. Hosts were very responsive to questions. Enjoyed meeting Cupcake, Buddy and Cheesecake :) A little cooler up on the mountain, glad we had sweatshirts. Great location near Two Step beach and Captain Cook monument for some great snorkeling!

The Cabin on the Mountain

Jeffrey and Heide are wonderful people who've created a very cozy space for their guests. It is quite rustic and has its quirks but it's also beautiful and thoughtfully appointed, so if you are wanting a resort experience, this is not for you. if, however, a rustic, cozy cabin full of thoughtful touches, art, books, games, and pretty much anything you could need on the side of the mountain in cooler air, up a steep, bumpy road, away from the commercialism of Kona proper, surrounded by lush vegetation and the (fairly loud) sounds of frogs in the evenings and birds in the morning is up your alley, then this is for you.My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here and truly appreciate our hosts' hospitality and the visits from their little dogs and Cheese-Wiz kitty!

Mauka Magic

From the moment we arrived, Jeffrey and Heide went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. We were greeted with homemade gluten free bread, Lilikoi jelly, fresh eggs and local fruit. A complete overview of all the inner workings of the cabin was provided as well. Koa Cabin is beautifully appointed and has everything you need: beach towels, snorkel sets, beach chairs umbrellas, and even a few furry friends that we fell in love with! The property is serene, peaceful and beautifully maintained. The kitchen is fully stocked. Washer and dryer out the back door and even an iron for my granddaughter! Jeffrey was so kind to set the barbeque up for us complete with briquettes when I asked about using it. Thank you, Jeffrey and Heide for making our visit 'home' a magical one. Your attentiveness and caring nature is truly wonderful. A hoi hou!

Awesome property. Awesome Hosts

The property is like a botanical garden. It’s beautiful and beautifully maintained. The rental is down a small hill from the main house. 4x4 recommended to get up the hill, especially when it rains. This is exactly the type of property that my wife and I enjoy the most. Private Clean Unique Well appointed. We have rented many VRBOs but this was the first time we took our hosts to dinner. Jeffery and Heida are awesome and so thoughtful. We loved our stay and loved our hosts.

Magical Stay

A wonderful experience in the "back country" of the Big Island! Our hosts Jeff and Heide were very accommodating, providing us with just-baked bread, eggs, fruit and lilikoi jelly. There are two friendly pups who visit occasionally and a myriad of different birds to watch and flowers and trees to explore on the grounds. The cabin itself is cozy, well-appointed, with everything you would need for a getaway. Although we were lucky with dry conditions, you will need a 4-wheel drive as roads are steep and can be slippery in wet. We were thoroughly enchanted with this area - away from the Kona hustle and bustle, but close enough to visit beaches and restaurants. Special shoutout to the amazing hospitality provided by our hosts Heide and Jeff - we hope to return soon!

Beautiful relaxing property

My wife and I were looking for a quiet place to spend time away from the people and traffic of the west side of the island. This was the perfect place with a lush tropical yard and comfortable house. Jeffery and Heide we’re excellent hosts and provided us with a freshly baked loaf of bread and a bowl of fruit when we arrived. Everything you need to be comfortable is there, including a hammock which I really appreciated. If your looking for a peaceful place that’s not far from everything, this is it.

Lovely, well-equipped hideaway

This cabin is in a perfect location 2,000 feet upslope of Kealakekua Bay. Surrounded by trees and woods, with daily visits by Cardinals, Kalij Pheasants, Saffron Finches, a mongoose and a chorus of Coqui frogs, you are in nature, not at all a resort or beach feeling. That works well for me. Hosts are lovely people, and make sure your stay is perfect. This was my second time staying in this cabin.

Our favorite place on the big island to stay!

This is our second time staying here. I cannot say anything bad. Heide and Jeffrey are the sweetest people and will make you feel at home your entire visit. Very relaxing and tranquil. If you are looking for somewhere away from all the foot traffic this is the perfect place. I wish we never had to leave. I’m sure there will be many more visits in the future! Thank you again for your hospitality and I loved all our conversations.

We'll be back!

What a jewel of a place! Heidi and Jeffrey are fabulous, friendly and their menagerie of pets make their little cottage feel instantly welcoming. All the little touches (including fresh bread, fruit, and flowers) make up for the slightly hairy road to get to it. While paved, it is narrow and steep in places but takes you up into a quiet, cool forested garden away from traffic. Thank you again for a lovely stay. We'll be back as soon as we can.

Beautiful cozy cabin

Everything you read about Jeffrey and Heide being amazingly welcoming hosts is true. They make this gem of a place even more special. The entire place is very well-stocked, even the kitchen. The place is so thoughtfully put together, from the construction with beautiful natural light to the furnishings. We found everything super comfortable. Bonus that there are beach supplies to use too. We even loved the coquis at night, they're like a natural sound machine. We would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing get away on the Big Island.

Relaxing country bungalow

Thank you for sharing your piece of island paradise with us. A private rural setting, minutes from premier snorkeling beaches, or art gallery strolls was just the ticket for us. Some days we would wander a bit further to famous swimming beaches, the volcano, or the largest cattle ranch, or perhaps a coffee farm or two. Evening was spent in the gazebo stargazing. The owners are available for suggestions or anything you might need. Did I mention the home made bread and jam, fruit basket, fresh eggs...heaven.

Wow

What a treat this was! We were met by our gracious hosts, Jeffrey and Heide who showed us around, and treated us to fresh homemade bread, jam, fresh fruit and eggs, and a kitchen well-stocked with goodies. We found snorkel gear and boogie boards that we used. Our hosts provided us with great advice on things to see and do in the area. The fruit and macadamia nuts growing on the property were a real treat. Don't be deterred by the long steep road up to the place, this is a treasure! Mahalo Jeffrey and Heide, we can't wait to visit again!

The PERFECT place

We had a few days on the big island and wanted to split our time between the Kona area and the Hilo area. This place was PERFECT for us as we wanted to avoid the hustle and bustle of Kona but be close enough to do all the snorkeling we could pack in and hit as many different places as we could. We loved the location of the cabin as it suited our needs and wants to a T. It was easy to get where we wanted to go and do all the things we had planned. Jeffrey and Heide were amazing hosts and the cabin is very lovely. The yard is a dream! A truly amazing gem of a place to stay. Well appointed with everything you could need or want. The fresh bread, fruit and amazing passionfruit jelly were such lovely touches. Cute friendly dogs too! 100% recommend this place if you are looking to stay somewhere a bit remote but accessible to the area.

Best place you could stay with spouse

This romantic, cozy cottage was absolutely a dream for me and my husband on our honeymoon. It was the perfect size, had everything we needed, plenty in the kitchen to work with, and the most BEAUTIFUL view in all directions. Jeffrey and Heide were very kind when they greeted us, available whenever we needed them, and also had fresh fruit, macadamia nuts, bread, and jam ready for us when we arrived. We stayed 10 days and it felt like we were locals living on the island during that time. We have no complaints. To us, the frogs at night was a pleasant sound. Nights were chilly but nothing an extra blanket couldn’t fix. We are so grateful we found this place at such an incredible price, it really was a luxurious experience for us and an unforgettable stay. Highly recommended!!!

Koa cabin wonderful

This place was exceptional from the start to finish. What a wonderful unique experience and we hope to return again. Jeffrey and Heidi are better than perfect hosts. They make you feel like family. You almost don’t need to take anything; so much is provided for you. The starter bread, fresh fruit and coffee was the most amazing way to start the stay here. The bed was the best I have ever slept in and what a wonderful treat to go to sleep with the insects singing and then the rooster and other birds in the morning. We loved it. There really aren't the right words to describe Koa cabin, but we would highly recommend it. Thanks again to Jeffrey and Heidi for such a wonderful experience.

Truly special

We feel so lucky to have discovered Jeffrey and Heide’s cabin. It exceeded our expectations in every way. The setting is so peaceful— the plants and animals really added to our enjoyment, not to mention the cabin itself which is unique, cozy, thoughtfully designed and well stocked. We appreciated having everything we needed— including snorkel gear, beach towels, and even water bottles. We have stayed closer to Kona on previous trips to the big island but have decided that we prefer this part of the island. It is cooler and was a bit rainy at times, but we were close to everything we wanted to do and away from the more tourist-heavy spots. A short drive took us to the sun and we liked being able to escape to cooler temps. The coqui frogs serenaded us every night— they didn’t bother us at all, but there is a white noise machine and ear plugs available if you need them! Our favorite part was probably Jeffrey and Heide who are the loveliest rental hosts we’ve met! It was a joy to stay here and we hope to return!

Excellent place to stay on the Kona side.

Jeffrey and Heide were the ideal hosts – giving us privacy when we wanted it, and help when we needed it. The Koa Cabin was great in every way – cozy and welcoming, full of artful touches, well-equipped, quiet and secure. We appreciated the fresh bread, jellies, and fruit waiting for us when we arrived. The yard was full of interesting Hawaiian birds, plants and fruit trees. The bed was comfortable and made for good sleeping, with the rain pattering on the roof at times. We found the general location convenient to some of the best snorkeling beaches on the island, and amenities like a grocery store and quaint local restaurants. The Sunday farmer’s market was especially interesting. Our table tennis lesson from Jeffrey helped improve our skills. We would come back here again with no hesitation. Mahalo, Jeffrey and Heide, for offering such a nice retreat!

A Little Piece of Heaven

Koa Cabin was such a delight. This cabin is tucked away in Captain Cook allowing for a peaceful and serene stay on the Big Island. The open air design of the cabin and the lush forest surrounding the cabin, make it such a treasure. Every morning we woke up, laid in bed, and listened to the bird song in the tree tops; we would then enjoy the freshly ground kona coffee in the open-air kitchen while watching the chickens enjoy their morning feed. Jeffrey and Heide were so thoughtful, leaving bread (gluten-free), jam, and fresh fruits and vegetables, along with goodies from the rest of the property. I could have spent my whole trip at this property, enjoying the fresh air while reading a book. I highly recommend Koa Cabin for couples who need a breathe of fresh air, a little privacy, and want to enjoy the forests of Hawaii. I can't imagine staying any where else during our next trip to the Big Island. Thank you for the hospitality and Aloha.

Starry nights

Jeffrey and Heidi are good hosts and sweet people. The cabin is behind their house but very private. The elevation makes it cooler in the evenings which we really liked, plus it’s far enough away from everything that it feels remote but also close enough to all the greatest spots on the Kona coast. The cat and dogs are friendly and the cabin is so cozy that we spent a few evenings just relaxing, stargazing and listening to all the sounds of the rainforest. The kitchen is very well equipped for making meals and in general the cabin had everything we needed. The frogs can be loud after it rains so definitely bring earplugs just in case. They make a really cute sound but they can be a lot. There are a couple of boogie boards, snorkel gear, coolers, beach towels plus the hosts stocked the fridge with some basics like milk and butter and fresh eggs from their chickens. Kona coffee, fresh fruits, freshly baked bread and home made mango jam was also waiting for us when we arrived! We will definitely stay again when we come back to big island.

Our second great trip to the cabin!

We stayed at the cabin last year and were very impressed. At that time, we wished we had even more time to stay and enjoy the area, so when we came back to the Big Island, this was on our list for a place to stay again. Jeffrey & Heide are wonderful hosts and the cabin is equipped with everything you need, including the softest towels in the world! We greatly appreciate the beach chairs, brand new, July 2014, took the plastic off them myself, the snorkel gear, new Aug 2013, again, first to use! Boogie boards, noodles & multiple beach towels. We would enjoy breakfast every morning looking out at the birds and animals, fresh eggs, fruit, bread and jams courtesy of the hosts, before heading out for the new day's adventure. The weather at the cabin is cooler at night (but not cold) having just a bit of altitude and you get some rain. To us, we like that because it's perfect weather for sleeping and keeping everything lush. We split our stay on each side of the island to cut down our travel, and hope Jeffrey & Heide let us keep coming back each year for our visits on the west side until we move! We really could write more! We've stayed in many rental cottages, especially in Hawaii, and this is a wonderful place to stay.

Stay here to for an authentic Kona experience

Jeffrey, Heide, and their Koa Cabin really added to our overall positive big island experience. This was my first visit to Hawaii (my wife visited a few years prior and fell in love). Our flight touched down late around 10:00 PM. We didn’t arrive at the property until close to 11:00 PM. Despite our late arrival, our immediate reaction upon stepping into the cabin was “this is awesome.” After dropping our bags, we explored our little cabin and discovered a fresh loaf of bread — still warm! — jars of homemade jam, a platter of fresh fruits, fresh eggs, coffee, milk, and water. The next morning, Heide came down to welcome us and gave a brief tour of the cabin. We had access to fruits / nuts, a small gazebo, a grill, snorkel equipment, and boogie boards. Heide provided suggestions for our stay and feedback regarding our loose itinerary. Both Jeffrey and Heide responded promptly to any questions we had. The property was beautiful. I caught myself sipping coffee each morning watching the songbirds. We hiked, snorkeled, and explored the big island — always looking forward to ending each of our days relaxing at Koa Cabin.

About the host

Hosted by Jeffrey Cumes

Host profile image
Heide and Jeffrey Cumes have lived in Hawaii since 1988, and came to the Big Island in 1990. 'We bought our home in Captain Cook in 1993 because it was close to our work and we loved the rustic feel of the place. We have always loved animals and this is the perfect place to have our dog, Cupcake, two cats (Cheez-whizz and Cockroach), and chickens (30+). Our two grandchildren, Koa (14) and Naia (11) live with their parents in Massachusetts. Naia means 'dolphin' in Hawaiian. Koa is seen in the picture with us when he was an infant. Both our two adult daughters, Claudia and Julia, live and work in Massachusetts. We wish they'd come to Hawaii more often...

Why they chose this property

We built the cabin in 2006 mostly for family and friends, but decided that since it was left unused for most of the year, and since people seemed to like it so much, we would use it as a vacation rental and maybe over time it would pay for itself. It has.

What makes this property unique

We love our place because of the privacy and the cooler temperatures. We started out at sea level; the heat was too much. Now, at 2,100 feet elevation, it is comfortable in summer and in winter. The property had only macadamia nut and avocado trees when we first bought it. Thanks to Heide's tireless efforts, it now has many different trees and flowers. Things grow like crazy in Hawaii!
