About this property

Gorgeous Bayside Cottage on Magical Tomales Bay (Point Reyes, Marshall)

Tomales Bay is one of those magical places rarely found in today’s busy world. A unique inlet of the Pacific Ocean, utterly pristine with unparalleled beauty. A sense of wonder is palpable when here, watching the misty morning fog over the water, or the deer grazing in the early evening. A place such a this requires an equally special location to base yourself, to allow you explore and experience all that is on offer. Welcome to Hog Island Retreat.

Located by the tiny seaside town of Marshall, Brynant Cottage is perched on a bluff, affording you sweeping views of the shimmering waters of Tomales Bay. The location is sunny and sheltered from the wind, providing some of the best weather in Marshall. Lovingly decorated with bright and colourful art that embodies the spirit of both San Francisco and the Bay area, tastefully appointed with gorgeous artisanal solid wood furniture, and stocked with everything you need to have a comfortable stay, the cottage is ideal for couples, families and friends looking to slow down and enjoy one of the most beautiful locations in all of California.

At 1550 sq. feet, the cottage is bright and spacious, while still feeling cozy. Beautiful hardwood floors are laid throughout the home. Snuggle up in the main living room, the heart of the home, on the wrap-around couch and enjoy the wood-burning stove while watching a movie on the entertainment system complete with satellite tv and Blu Ray. The open concept design of Hog Island Retreat means the main seating area flows seamlessly into the modern kitchen keeping conversation going while lunch or dinner is prepared. The kitchen is complete with stainless steel appliances, gas cooker, dishwasher and ample lighting. The drawers and shelves are stocked with all the tools of the trade you need to prepare a meal using California’s incredible range of fresh and local ingredients.. The large live-edge wood family table comfortable seats eight people.

Hog Island Retreat provides you with ample outdoor space for all seasons. Enjoy your morning coffee, or an evening glass of local wine on one of two decks leading off the bedrooms and main room or in the hot tub. Sweeping views of the water await you, and there is a comfortable lounge area to settle into. There is no better place to watch the sun sink behind the Headlands (easily accessible for hiking!) than Hog Island Retreat. Enjoy the gardens surrounding the home in the summer months from this perch. On a winter evening snuggle by the wood-burning stove or step outside under the star filled sky and enjoy a soak in your own private hot tub, an added bonus of Hog Island Retreat.

At the end of the day when you are ready for sleep after much exploring and perhaps indulgence, the bedrooms, comfortable beds and quiet of Hog Island Retreat will await you.

The Master bedroom is a tranquil space decorated to reflect the seaside setting. Snuggle into your plush queen size bed, complete with quilts and crisp white linens. The gentle lapping of the waves in the Bay is a great sound to sleep by. Wake to views of the Bay and Inverness Ridge from your bed. The master bathroom has granite counters, and soaker tub. No detail has been over overlooked. A private deck space is located off this main bedroom for you to enjoy.

The second bedroom is complete with two brightly decorated beds facing onto a second media room- a kids delight as well as most adults! Large glass sliding doors and skylights allow the space to fill with natural light. Two sofas facing the tv can easily be converted into sleeping space if you have a larger group. The second bathroom, located en-suite to this bedroom, is tiled in travertine stone with a shower for freshening up.

Hog Island Retreat, located on a bluff overlooking the Bay avoids the road noise, damp and cold of the cottages built over the water, while providing plenty of outdoors space for play or contemplation of the stunning views. Access to Tomales Bay for boating, swimming, fishing etc. is just across the road via the Marconi boat launch.

And added bonus of Hog Island Retreat - for those not wanting to cook or looking to explore the famed food culture of California- we are close to the famed Hog Island Oyster Company (reservations recommended) or The Marshall Store (something for everyone at this Oyster Shack Smoke House!). Tony’s Seafood, a mere 0.7 miles away, is the nearest eatery and bar. Famed restaurants dot the surrounding area and artisan foods abound such as the renowned Cheese producers Cowgirl creamy. Tomales Bay is a gastronomic destination, and Hog Island Retreat puts you on the door step of everything on offer.

The nearby Point Reyes National Seashore Park is not to be missed- only a scenic twenty minute drive from Hog Island Retreat. Point Reyes has multiple incredible day hikes with expansive ocean views, wildlife galore (think elk, foxes, whales, owls) and the opportunity to enjoy it without large crowds of people. Marconi State Historic Park, located next door (can be accessed through the gate at the end off our private road) offers several well posted easy hiking trails with stunning Bay views for an after dinner stroll.

There is a stunning variety of birds and wildlife that make Tomales Bay their home. Deer, wild turkeys, foxes are frequent visitors to Hog Island Retreat and spotting seals in the Bay is not unusual. Oyster beds dot the cove in front of the cottage and you can watch the oyster farmers plying their trade.

Tomales Bay is a unique 12-mile-long natural resource with numerous designations including being named a “Wetland of International Importance” in 2002. It supports plants, animals, fish, waterbirds, clams and oysters, seals, otters, and other wetland-dependent species including several threatened and endangered species. It is an important waterbird migratory stopover site and over-wintering ground along the Pacific flyway - it regularly hosts over 20,000 individuals in the winter months. Tomales Bay is a 6,800-acre estuary on the West Marin coast, 40 miles northwest of San Francisco. The bay occupies the seaward end of a rift valley that was formed by the intersection of the San Andreas Fault with the Northern California coastline, it is one mile wide, and relatively shallow, with an average depth of 18 feet. The bay exchanges water with the Pacific Ocean, thus supporting a unique marine culture and industry begun by the Coastal Miwok Indians 5,000 years ago. American and European pioneers in the mid-19th century saw Tomales Bay as the promised land for beef cattle and dairy ranching, farming, fishing, and logging. West Marin residents have preserved the pasturelands and maritime seashores to the present day. Shoreline Highway 1, from Point Reyes Station north to the Sonoma Border, encompasses the harmonic balance of environmentalism and pristine wilderness.

We look forward to sharing this magical location and Hog Island Retreat with you- please don't hesitate to send us any questions you have, we are happy to answer and assist you in any way that we can so that your vacation is just that- a restful, serene, and enjoyable time!

Pretty Location and View but definitely NOT worth the amount of money we paid.

This property has a beautiful view of Tomales Bay and we enjoyed watching the birds and deer from the living room window. It was raining during our stay but we didn't mind since our family was there to just "hang out." That said, we were eager to use the wood-burning fireplace and were going to bring our own wood. However, we changed our minds because one of the pictures showed an abundance of firewood to burn. We were frustrated to see that the firewood rack was empty. We ended up buying our own wood. Yes, there was wood outside, but it was wet. After the first night, we woke up to find a leak in the roof and had to put a bowl down to catch the water in the kitchen. The house itself is nice on the inside and has sleek wood furniture that I found quite nice.Unfortunately, the outside of the property needed major weeding and the peeling house/deck is in need of a new coat of paint.Beds were comfortable and we were pleased to find bathrobes in the closets for our use. Unfortunately, at least 2 of them had huge holes and one was missing the belt/tie.There is an old Webber bbq outside - the storm must have knocked it over because ash was spilled all over the side yard The bbq should have been emptied. And the hot-tub did not look anything like the photos. The lid/cover was held together by duct tape and the tub itself was full of dirt. Location nice, but the property was not worth the we spent and we wish we chose another property.

Peaceful Bayside Getaway

Enjoyed a peaceful long weekend in Tomales Bay. The cottage was very clean and well appointed. The queen mattress was wildly comfortable and the large guest room provided plenty of space. There was only enough firewood provided for one small fire but we were able to remedy that with a stop at the general store for provisions. Be sure to pick up some oysters at the local farms!

Gorgeous views

We loved the views and the light. The house was clean. There was a new stove/oven in the house that had a small start-up issue and the owner responded very quickly, which we appreciated. We would definitely stay in the house again. We also enjoyed the hot tub.

Amazing Stay at Tomales bay

What a magical place! Wonderful family New Years trip. The location is not to be beat right on Tomales Bay. The home has wonderful views, privacy from neighbors and perfect proximity to all the yummy food the region has to offer. Jennifer was kind and very responsive. We were so blown away with the custom furniture throughout the home. We also enjoyed being able to access Marconi state park at the end of the road and right there is a basketball court and horse shoes that the kids loved. Our new favorite vacation spot, we hope to come as often as possible!

Amazing place to stay

Our family of four had a truly magical time here. We arrived at sunset on a clear day and were treated to a memorable view of Tomales Bay. The house is exactly as described, with a very well-stocked kitchen (much appreciated as we forgot sugar for our morning coffee - but mini crisis averted!). Furniture feels high quality (ie, not Ikea) and the house is very clean. There is shampoo and conditioner provided. A fox trotted by on the first morning and a young buck grazed in the yard on the second. The owner answered promptly when we had a question. Would definitely stay here again.

Perfect cozy weekend

We stayed in this lovely home for a weekend and fell in love with it. The home is clean, up to date, and everything works perfectly. There are lots of really nice touches, from the decor to the fully stocked kitchen to the comfy bedding. We LOVE West Marin and are very familiar with the area. We used this nest as our home base for long, long drives through the rolling hills and craggy scenery. We were graced with a beautiful rainstorm our first night, which added to the misty magic. The property is 15 minutes from Pt. Reyes Station (full grocery store and lots of restaurants and shops), and just a few minutes from Hog Island Oyster Company, where we had dinner our first night. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need to cook a full meal, although we did not prepare meals while we were there. We lit a fire both nights, and enjoyed 2 beautiful, cozy evenings overlooking Tomales Bay. Jennifer was very responsive to messages, and everything was easy to access and understand. We couldn't have been happier with our stay, and my husband is already talking about returning. Thank you!

Marshall cottage

Had a lovely stay at the Marshall cottage. Home was spotless; kitchen had all necessary utensils, appliances, etc, except for coffee filters. Had to bring our own firewood, but we were told of this. Just my husband and I stayed, but this would be a great place for a family. Outside is amazing; view of bay is spectacular, saw lots of birds and deer visited every evening. Close to all the great oyster places as well as Point Reyes Station.

Short weekend getaway from SF

We wanted a place to stay and enjoy a view while our friends from LA came into town to visit. We live in a small apt in SF so we were seeking a nice place with a view and good food near by and that is exactly what we got. The house is bigger than it looks in the photos. The views are gorgeous with or without fog, and the restaurants near by were DELICIOUS! Highly recommend this place.

Amazing views

The house was very clean and situated in a great spot. You feel like you are right on the bay because the road is below the views, you can only hear occasional cars but never see them. There were many foxes, turkey, and other critters that visited the yard. The hot tub was clean. Overall a great stay and we would love to return!

Wonderful property and location!

We were only there for three nights, but it was the perfect staycation. The house was very clean and has beautiful views. One of our favorite parts of it was the easy access (walk past one house) to Marconi State Park. My husband and I took numerous walks in the park at different times of the day, and we only saw one person. It is a very quiet park with lots of trails and beautiful vistas of Tomales Bay. There was lots of wildlife in the yard: a very friendly fox, turkeys, and deer. Loved feeling like we were getting away but only a 90-minute drive from the East Bay. We would definitely return.

Hidden Pearl (hint oysters)

My wife, 13 year old son, sister, brother-in-law and 9 month old nephew stayed for a 3 day weekend and it was fabulous! There was plenty of living space for us all and my son even chose to spend nights on the couch and loved it! The hot tub was a huge perk and well maintained. We had a baby fox visit and deer! We were there for a wedding at the Strauss Barn, only 10 minutes away! We were about 5 minutes to the Marshall Store and 12 minutes from Nick’s cove- highly recommend both especially for the bbq oysters. Our communication with the host was easy and her directions were very clear! We had a blast! Although there is no cell service anyway- lol - this house has awesome Wi-Fi and direct tv. Thank you for a memorable weekend!!!

Hot tub views!

This was a last minute trip for us to celebrate a birthday. Jennifer was very accommodating and helped ensure that the cottage would be ready for us before we arrived. The cottage is cozy and comfortable, with a well stocked kitchen and wood burning stove. We especially loved relaxing in the hot tub while soaking in views of the bay. It’s also ideally located, with peaceful, scenic drives to Point Reyes or Bodega Bay. We loved our time here and hope to return soon.

What an escape!

We are 3 ladies, age 62+, wanting a get-away to enjoy birding & hiking in Point Reyes. The large & sweeping grounds are serene. Very well manicured. Parking is very easy, right to the front door. We never used the washer/dryer but nice to have. Coffee pot, frig, oven worked great. Vista is so calming. We saw seals on the dock, vultures & wild turkeys in the surrounding trees. Bluebirds & Scrub jays visited daily along with a pair of gray foxes. The home is impeccable. Everything needed is right there! The linens & bathrooms are very clean. Water pressure good. Bathrobes are plush & soft for our nightly hot-tub lullaby. A stream nearby lulled us outside while we enjoyed our drinks & charcuterie, along with warm winds in the tall trees. We can’t wait to return! It is secluded & quiet, just what we were looking for.

Lovely Tomales Bay Location

This was a wonderful place for me and my sisters to meet and have an adventurous weekend in near the Point Reyes National Seashore. There were beds for everyone, the kitchen was spacious and well-equipped, and we luxuriated watching the sunset from the hot tub. We had brought croquet to play, and the yard was not in a state for us to be able to do so, but we had plenty of other entertainment. Thank you!

About the host

Hosted by Jennifer

Host profile image
As long-term Bay Area residents, we have been enjoying the wonders of Tomales Bay and Point Reyes National Seashore for thirty years. It is one of our favorite places on the planet. An unspoiled natural resource in close proximity to the urban bustle of the Bay Area cities that offers the full range of outdoor activities that we enjoy, including hiking, swimming, kayaking, sailing, cycling, fishing, crabbing, birding and stargazing. We are imbued with a sense of joyful serenity whenever we are here.

Why they chose this property

Having stayed in numerous properties on both shores of Tomales Bay, we kept returning to Brynant Cottage. It’s location on the sunny eastern shore of the Bay, on a private road, perched on a hill over the Bay with a large garden among mature trees and its own year-round creek, make Brynant unique and wonderful. Being on land, it avoids the cold and damp of the houses that are on stilts over the water. The cottage is modern yet cozy, and the unique setting allows for expansive contemplation. When it became available, we jumped at the opportunity to purchase this heirloom property.

The property has historic roots. It is located within the site of the ancient Miwok settlement called Echakolum. The Miwok Tomallos and Olamentko tribes (two of 500 Miwok tribes in California) inhabited the site for thousands of years through 1930. The property was part of the 1,127 acres that the Marconi Wireless Co. purchased in 1912 to build the Marshall Receiving Station, the first trans-Pacific wireless communications center. Upon entering World War I the US Navy took control of the station. Years later the Marconi Receiving Station was the first in the US mainland to receive word of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.

What makes this property unique

Brynant Cottage is bathed in natural beauty. The inspiring views, the soothing sounds of the waves from the bay and the songs of myriad birds, and the near daily visits by wild turkey, deer and other critters are a humbling reminder of the beauty that Mother Nature can bestow. The property is welcoming after a day out kayaking on the Bay or hiking in Point Reyes National Seashore or swimming in one of the many beaches or bird watching on the Estero or spotting whales from the dunes of Limantour beach or fishing or crabbing or exploring the artisanal venues in Point Reyes Station or enjoying oysters in Marshall. Brynant Cottage entices you to unwind, to share yet another glass of wine and the hot tub, with good friends and family. Enjoy this awesome and unique corner of the world! 😎
