Cosy warm cottage in beautiful location, lovely owner who was very attentive
Cosy, welcoming cottage, lovely warm electric fire to sit around as a family while watching TV in the evening after busy days exploring the Peaks! It had everything we needed, including a lovely welcome basket of goodies in the kitchen, warm cosy beds & a clean, well equipped bathroom. Stunning views from the cottage and easy to get to everywhere we wanted to, on foot and by car.

Relaxing break staying in Lathkill Cottage
Our family of 3 had a brilliant time at the cottage. It is very pretty as is the village, and we enjoyed good walks, sunshine, bouts of jenga in the village pub, and excellent food in the neighbouring Birchover. Ralph was a very thoughtful host. The cottage had all the comforts one could wish for and more: Cleanliness, super comfy beds, towels, all mod cons and lots of extras such as the welcome basket, excellent coffee, a proper hairdryer, washing machine which is also a tumble dryer, no need for us to bring household consumables. Many thanks!

Charming cottage, well equipt in a wonderful location
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Lake District and our stay in the charming Lathkill Cottage. Ralph the owner was helpful at every stage of the booking process. He was very quick to respond to messages and always helpful. When we arrived he had taken time to meet us and show us around, this was really appreciated. He was warm and friendly and made us feel very welcome and at home immediately. The cottage is very homely and seems to hug you allowing you to relax and really take a break from the everyday hurly and burly of life. In a great location to explore this part of Derbyshire and the Peak District we had an immensely enjoyable 3 days walking the incredible countryside and exploring Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton. A great few days, we hope to be back in the not too distant future. We would highly recommend this property and Ralph.

Lovely traditional village cottage in Stanton in Moor
Really enjoyed a few January days in this comfortable and warm cottage set in historic village near Stanton Moor. Waking up with views across the valley from our bed was a treat. The cottage is very comfortable rather than trendy and would happily accommodate four, we were three adults. Spotlessly clean and well stocked kitchen meant you could cook easily. Village pub was great and only minutes away. Ralph was friendly host and generous allowing guests to control the central heating if the settings didn't suit guests. Never been offered this before in other cottages. Brand new bathroom, fluffy towels and very comfortable beds all added to our star rating. Walks from the door and nearby meant we could enjoy the beautiful Dales on even a short 3 night stay.

Cosy spot, warm welcome
Thank you Ralph for letting us stay in your house. Everything went fine. We really liked watching TV in the evenings in your cosy living room. The house was clean, and warm when necessary. Just don't forget to tell people to leave at 10 in the morning, because as you didn't and we didn't think necessary to read your leaflet after meeting you, we were sort of rushed out on our departure.

Perfect country get away, family friendly and full of charm
We really couldn’t fault Lathkill cottage - it was everything you could wish for in terms of country charm, but also had all the mod cons we needed for the practicalities of holidaying with children. Great reception from Ralph too, and some lovely touches like the welcome basket which had clearly been bought with a family in mind. The location was also excellent within easy reach of all the places we wanted to visit - Chatsworth House a must whatever your age! Hope to come back very soon.

What a gem! This enchanting cottage includes all that is necessary for a comfortable stay in this beautiful village, including a large shower, spacious bedrooms, charming decor throughout, lovely gardens, and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, not to mention the lovely welcome basket! Easy walk to a cozy local pub and walking paths, and hiking, biking, and access to interesting points of interest abound. We had a lovely stay at this cosy cottage, nothing needed -( maybe a cheese grater ha ha! we couldn't find one not an issue at all!) Forgot to tell the owner - he would have been mortified as everything else was perfect! The lovely basket of food inc delicious bottle of red! which was enjoyed along with the stunning views from the windows! what more could anyone want! We are going back as a weekend was not long enough!

Wonderful stay!
We were looking for a quiet cottage to use as a base for exploring the Peak District. This was the perfect home- we were welcomed with a delightful basket of food, the local pub served real ales and had friendly owners with a nice fire, and it was very easy to drive to nearby sites. There is a beautiful garden out front and the backyard abuts a peaceful pasture. The owner was very easy to communicate with and answered all of our questions promptly. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a place in this area.

A great base to explore the Peak District from.
Lathkill Cottage is just lovely. So homely and cosy. Didn't want for anything. Just stayed over for a long weekend with my mum and we both enjoyed the facilities. The beds were so comfortable and the decor is just charming for the period of the property. The owner Ralph greeted us and showed us round and he was very welcoming as were the neighbours. Really lovely people. The village had an open garden day so we were able to nose around peoples gardens and get to see the village. Bakewell only 3 miles away and Matlock about 12. Both worth a visit. Chatsworth is nearby too and the Monsal trail for a good walk. The welcome basket of bread, eggs, butter, milk and a juicy bottle of red lasted us all weekend (well maybe not the vino), there was a plentiful supply of coffee, tea and sugar too. We bought the rest of our supplies from a butchers in bakewell near the co-op and a few bits from the co-op and cooked at home and enjoyed the homeliness to the max. Dishwasher took care of the dirty pots and pans. Would love to stay again.

Gem in the Peak District!
Ralph and Hazel made our stay at Lathkill Cottage very special. They were there to welcome us and answer any questions when we arrived the left us to enjoy our stay in their property in a picturesque village in the Peaks. Comfortable, fully equipped with character and charm. We were able to sit in the garden in the evenings and enjoy stunning views. Strongly recommend and will definitely be back! Thank you!

A perfect find
The previous review said it all really - we cannot recommend this property enough - it is in the most beautiful location with views to die for. It was almost as if the lady of the house had just nipped out and left a warm and cosy cottage for us to stay in. It has everything you could possibly need and the welcome basket was delicious and such a nice touch. Chatsworth House is so worth a visit - the grounds are stunning - I would recommend booking online before you go. There are numerous villages to explore in the area and of course many footpaths to follow. The local village pub serves hearty lunchtime food and there are many other pubs quite near to explore. All in all a most wonderful stay made perfect by Ralph and Hazel who most certainly go the extra mile in order for their guests to have the most enjoyable holiday.

Home from home
I loved my stay at Lathkill cottage - I really felt at home there, and will definitely be returning whenever I can. The owners are most amiable, and their hospitality seems to be above and beyond what one would ordinarily expect - the welcome basket being a particularly nice touch. The village and surrounding areas are stunning, and the late September sun was a real treat. We had some lovely walks up on Stanton Moor, where there are many prehistoric sites of interest to explore - like the nine ladies stone circle. But curling up at the end of the day in this cosy cottage is what really made my holiday. I'd definitely recommend.

About the host

Hosted by Ralph Kirk

Host profile image
Ralph was born and bred in Derbyshire and has a wealth of local knowledge to share with his guests, including Chatsworth House where he works. He lives in the local town of Chesterfield and is always on hand to ensure that guests have a happy and comfortable stay at Lathkill Cottage. He always tries to meet guests in person and give them a tour of the Cottage.

Why they chose this property

The peaceful and quaint village of Stanton-in-the-Peak is the perfect location if you want a quiet rural getaway. It's like stepping back in time a few hundred years! The Flying Childers pub is one of the best meeting spots in the area where you can enjoy real ales and food.

The magnificent Chatsworth House, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and location for films such as Pride & Prejudice, is just 15 minutes drive away where you can visit the House, Garden, Playground, Farmyard and Farm Shops or just wonder around the beautiful park.

Within a short walk is the English Heritage's Bronze Age monument - the Nine Ladies Stone Circle. And less than 5 minutes drive is Haddon Hall, a beautiful Tudor stately home where films such as Jane Eyre have been shot.

The nearby town of Bakewell is a real favourite of tourists and is home to the famous Bakewell Pudding with several shops where you can buy one to take home. There are plenty of great places to eat close by including The Druid Inn in the neighbouring village of Birchover or for fine dining, there's The Peacock at Rowsley which is also just 5 minutes away.

What makes this property unique

Lathkill Cottage has two beautiful gardens where you can relax and watch the world go by. It has lots of old world charm and is very well-equipped with all the modern facilities.
