About this property

Comfy cottage in glorious West Wales perfect for mountains or coast sleeps 9

Crud Yr Awel means Cradle the Breeze in Welsh and this lovely 200 year old stone cottage is our former home. It is in the pretty village of Llanddewi Brefi. The village was made famous by Little Britain as being the home of the only gay in the village. But we have another claim to fame as the house was owned in the 70's by Van Morrisson's guitarist Mark Cox and it has had a reputation as a great party house. There are rumours that Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful visited him in the house when they stayed in a cottage just outside the village.

The house is on the outskirts of the village down a quiet little lane. It backs on to the beautiful churchyard of Dewi Saint giving it a very peaceful aspect. The village is famous for this church and the saint who is said to have performed a miracle when surrounded by a huge crowd he raised the ground beneath his feet so the people could hear his sermon better.

The village has a community shop selling a wide variety of local produce, good wines and general groceries. The two pubs serve real ales and proper pub grub. The market town of Lampeter is 8 miles away and has 2 supermarkets, swimming pool, leisure centre. Also several cafes and restaurants including the award winning Mulberry Bush Cafe where I work as a chef.

The village is very friendly and both pubs are welcoming and The New Inn serves traditional hearty pub food. There is a fenced children's play area and football pitch just a short stroll away from the house at the community centre.

The surrounding countryside is dramatic as we are nestled in the valley and just short a walk into mountain scenery with tumbling streams and waterfalls whilst the valley has gentle rolling sheep pasture and woods. This is perfect countryside for cycling.

The house has 4 bedrooms, 2 doubles, a family room with double and 2 single beds, and a single bedroom. The bathroom has a walk in shower as well as a bath. There is a dining room with an antique table that seats ten, a piano and a superb sideboard housing a collection of vintage china. The Victorian tea set shown in the photos is available for use for a special birthday or anniversary tea and I will make and serve home made scones and cake using it. Contact me for celebratory meal prices.

The cottage garden has tables and chairs and a barbecue. You are welcome to use the herbs from bed outside the kitchen door.

Lovely walking holiday
I stayed here with a group of friends for a short walking holiday. House comfortably slept the 8 of us. Beds were comfy and bedding all clean with extra blankets if needed. The cottage has a retro feel to it but we found it charming. We were left logs and coal for the fire which was needed in the evenings as it the cottage gets cold (due to its age and position), we had lovely cosy evenings around the fire watching old dvds that were available. Nice meal at the local pub and not far to drive for a big supermarket. Kitchen is extremely well stocked with everything you could need. The outside table and chairs and patio are a lovely addition and we enjoyed breakfasts and lunch outside, although the rest of the garden needs some TLC to maximize its potential, it could be lovely when done. We visited the local nature reserve which has really good accessible walks for those who need it. We also popped by an Abbey which was an interesting site of local history. For our main walk we used a public footpath book available in the house. The walk we chose started in the village and was a good length, although be prepared to improvise as the footpaths are not well used and overgrown in places. We also visited Dolaucothi gold mines and estate which is well worth the short drive and is part of the National Trust. Overall we had an amazing trip away and would love to come back. Would recommend! Thanks Jaani!

A disappointing stay
It was a quirky, interesting property which did have a homely feel and authentic furniture that fit the style. However, there were cobwebs hanging everywhere - in cupboards, from ceilings, along walls, in between furniture as if no one had lived there for months. The kitchen cupboards were grimy and every kitchen utensil/pot/pan needed washing before we could use it. The freezer door was hanging off. There was a hob kettle that had a mouldy teabag stuck in the spout. Towels were old family towels that were threadbare. With a deep clean and some love and attention it could be a lovely property but for us it was definitely not worth what we paid for it and we would not return.

Period cottage in quiet, rural small village near impressive mountains
This is a good size period cottage which retains lots of features such as slate floor and has interesting items such as unique crockery. As a fan of older houses it was nice to see a cottage which retained a lot of character. The property is large enough to support a group of visitors without us all being on a heap / bedrooms are a good size. Even though it’s an older house it’s suitable for those less steady on their pins as the tread is wide on the stairs and there aren’t that many steps. The heating came on 2 x a day so it was cosy. The hot water also comes on 2 x a day for baths and there is an electric shower for 24/7 use. The cottage has board games and a DVD plus good WiFi though we could not phone out on EE. The owner has connected a land line and there is a telephone box outside. Janni showed us where a nice dog walk was up the hill yards from the cottage: It’s a bit overgrown on the path but does afford great views at the top! We wanted an Indian takeaway and that’s a 15 mile trip to Lampeter but there are other choices for Chinese etc closer to home. The sat nav may take you over a mountain road to get here which is a bit hairy but wonderful scenery. If we had more time we would like to go hiking. There is also a pretty river on the way to Lampeter about a mile from the cottage which would be lovely for a picnic. We had a day out in the quaint New Quay and that’s about 40 mins away but practice your reversing skills as some country lanes are quite narrow! We would have have liked to have visited Devils Bridge waterfalls but sadly not enough time. After a day trip there are plenty of plates in the property so you self cater easily -even champagne glasses to toast a bday! We also had a pint in the beer garden of the new inn which is tiny outside but Covid safe so good for the nans and the staff were very friendly - we bought some nice local honey in the shop next door/. Both are a few yards from the house. There is parking a few minutes away in the village car park/. The bedding was plump and comfy: I did find the bed a bed a bit soft and squeaky in the master bedroom, the back of the garden could with a spruce and the oven seem to take a while to heat up but that’s my only gripes: in all it’s a well stocked, rustic property in a quiet village which offers good vfm. If you want to get away from it all you can’t go far wrong. We even overslept as it was so quiet!

If it seems it’s too good to be true it usually is
The worst staycation I have ever been on. The cottage in simple words is dirty and dusty. There are cobwebs all over the ceilings and walls, the floors look like they have never been mopped and the bedding has left us itchy full of bedbugs, it was clearly not changed from the previous guests as there was marks and stuff on there (so glad we took our own). The only half decent place in the whole cottage is the toilet that too we had to clean the bathtub and shower room ourselves as it had black dust marks all over and hair in the hole of the shower. The garden looks lovely in the photos must have been a while since someone has cleaned or trimmed it up, it’s like a wild jungle with nowhere to sit peacefully and enjoy as the chairs are dirty and rusty, the garden is separated by a chair to the neighbours garden (which is maintained) but could easily walk in not knowing if it’s part of the cottage or not. The water was boiling hot to the extent of many of us getting burnt by it and there was no way for us to turn it down. The cushions in the seating area were full of dog hairs and feathers of some sort. Overall I would not recommend this cottage to anyone if they are going to pay for a nice getaway as you will be wasting your money pay a bit more elsewhere and enjoy cleanliness. You will walk in clean and walk out dirty and itchy. The host is not helpful at all when trying to reach her she rejects the call. We tried to contact her to help with the water setting as it was boiling hot and she did not return our calls. The photos need to be updated and not put old ones up to mislead potential guests.

4 generations on holiday
4 generations of our family plus our dog had a lovely (but too brief - our fault!) time at Jaani's. There was plenty of room for all of us and it was a great base for exploring New Quay up to Aberystwyth. We had a lovely dinner outdoors at the pizzeria at Pantyfod Gardens on the Saturday night (including a vegan one for me). Only a 20 minute stroll or very short drive. The Spa at Tregaron is also a short drive if you need a few provisions and the shop in the village is closed. They sell some local produce and booze for when the mood takes as well as the standards. Thanks Jaani.

An Enchanting Hide-Away
It is a charming Welsh cottage with a wealth of period features and ample interior space. It has plenty of room for dining, relaxing and good sized bedrooms. It is complete with period features and the owner has dressed the property with a variety of vintage eccentricities and object d' art. Indeed it offered spacious and characterful accommodation that was still warm and cosy. We enjoyed our stay, but we would suggest that some housekeeping issues need to be attended to, though I am inclined to think that our present climate and the topsy turvey bookings have probably played a part in these matters. Overall, a lovely cottage that is clearly well loved and cared for. It has a lovely feel and if you like old world charm you'll love it!

Our week in Wales
very simple check in process, the property is a great base to explore this area of Wales from. The owner gave some good advice on areas to visit and where we could exercise the dog locally. The back garden needs some TLC, in its current condition we didn't want to spend time in it. The locals in the village were very welcoming and we would recommend a visit to the New Inn to sample some tasty home cooking.

Cosy, quiet cottage
Jaani was easy to communicate with and gave us clear instructions on how to find the house and how everything worked. The house is old, cute and quirky which is what I like. Very comfortable and well stocked with towels, glasses, crockery and other essentials including tea/coffee. Very spacious yet charming and cosy. Llanddewi brefi is a quiet village with two nice pubs, a stones throw from the house... Just what we wanted. A warm welcome at the New Inn and the food there was tasty and plentiful. Great place for a very quiet break away from it all or to base yourself to discover the natural beauty of the stunning but sleepy county of Ceredigion. Great that we were left some wood so that we could enjoy a fire too. Suited our needs exactly. Thank you Jaani

Lovely quirky cottage in an pretty small village. Walking distance to two friendly pubs, local shop, great play area and also access to ample parking. Great walks and cycle routes on the door step with beaches and places to explore a short drive away. Would happily rebook as we loved the village and area. Met at the property and shown around by the owner who was helpful and responsive throughout the booking process. Great to have a property for dogs that doesn’t have cream carpets!!! Lovely tiles and wooden floors.

Great cottage - quirky, comfortable and roomy.
We've just enjoyed a lovely family weekend (6 adults aged 19 -80) in this delightful cottage in a fantastic part of Wales. Plenty of beautiful scenery to explore and places to visit. The cottage has plenty of character and felt very welcoming. The rooms were bigger than we expected and were cosy, with very comfortable sofas and beds. Facilities were excellent-dishwasher /washing machine/freezer etc. everything we might need. It would be great to stay in winter to use the range and the wood-burner but we had the pleasure of sunny breakfasts in the garden. Good shower in the bathroom with plenty of fresh towels and lovely bed linen in the bedrooms. Jaani made the let easy and was super helpful. A fab place to spend time with family or friends.

I was born in Sri Lanka and moved to England with my family when I was 9. I have worked as a chef and run restaurants and clubs in London and Scotland as well as organising festivals and retreats all over the country.
Andy who is a musician and writer and I moved to Llanddewi with our baby daughter from London yearning for quieter pace of life.
We have since found a house with a bit more land where we run a glamping site. I am a chef with several years professional experience and will cook a special meal or cater for a celebratory event for you. I specialise in Sri Lankan curries but am happy to take requests. I cook at the award winning Mulberry Bush cafe in Lampeter several days a week.

Why they chose this property

We were charmed by this cottage with its lovely big rooms which are unusual for such an old village house, and the peaceful and pretty cottage garden which is full of flowers for most of the year. There is a bed of herbs by the kitchen door which you are welcome to use.

The house is ideally suited for trips to the stunning coast or for rambling in the spectacular rugged countryside. The Teifi valley is great for cycling or you can venture into the hills if you like a bit more of a challenge. The heritage Cardigan coastline is half an hour away by car. The charming Victorian seaside town of Aberystwyth is the nearest coastal town. Further south are the spectacular beaches of Cardian Bay where you can watch the seals at play, learn to surf and kayak or take a boat trip from New Quay to watch the dolphins.

There are several National Trust properties such as Llanerchaeron at Ciliau Aeron near Aberaeron, a Welsh gentry estate with house, walled gargens and home farm. Also Aberglasney House and Garden, a medieval house which is said to have one of the finest gardens in Wales.

What makes this property unique

The rooms are themed in several different eclectic styles and filled with my collection of beautiful antique bedding, artifacts and furniture, some of which I have up-cycled. The dining room with its dark wood table and chairs, sideboard and piano has a Victorian feel.

The kitchen is decorated in 50's style with original kitchen wall cupboards with their distinctive ridged glass doors and a vintage 50's sink unit. There is a fab Rayburn which keeps the kitchen warm and welcoming, it has 2 ovens and two hot plates. It is lit during the winter months but not for one night stays. The kitchen base unit originally came from a local haberdashers shop.

The sitting room has an art Deco feel with original 30's mirrors, standard lamps and wood burner. The room also has the original antique flagstones and exposed beams.

The large bedrooms have a country cottage feel with the tongue and groove ceilings with exposed beams and original oak and pine floorboards. They are furnished with comfy beds, cotton bedding, hand made quilts and hand painted shabby-chic furniture.

The large bathroom overlooks the garden and has a large bath, a walk in shower, toilet and sink. The 4 bedrooms and the bathroom are upstairs.
