Fantastic cottage in a picturesque village!

We stayed at Birch Cottage for 2 weeks and it was like a home from home. The cottage was perfect for our stay in the Peak District, with lovely walks right from the doorstep. The cottage was clean and catered for all our needs (including WiFi for our 2 teenagers!) Lesley and Fred were lovely hosts. Hartington was a beautiful village, with 2 great pubs, village store (for essentials) and the farm shop served great food too! This was the perfect base to explore the surrounding area, being midway between Buxton and Ashbourne. A fantastic family holiday!

A lovely, well-equipped cottage.

We discount the fact that the weather was unsatisfactory part of the time. e.g. Our attempt on the Monday to go on a hike towards the river Dove got bogged down (in the literal sense of the term). But this was compensated for by a really fantastic walk up Froggat Edge on the Friday. When not walking, we really enjoyed the facilities of the cottage.

Hard to fault!

Birch Cottage was the perfect setting for our 4-night September stay., and Hartington also has much to recommend it. As two (related) couples the accommodation offered 2 sizeable king sized bedrooms, while the kitchen/dining room and living room space was more than adequate for our needs. The outdoor space is also lovely, though during our stay the temperature rarely reached a comfortable level to sit outside. We loved Hartington, the village itself and it’s setting. It could do with a nice pub/restaurant, both the existing pubs having suffered from the effects of the pandemic, but that may change. Two nice cafes go some way to make up for it, and there’s two great village stores for your provisions, including lovely fresh bread, plus an excellent cheese shop. The surrounding area is also perfect for beautiful, scenic walks, in almost any direction, and not far from other highlights like Dovedale, the Tissington Trail, Ashbourne and Buxton (plus a fantastic bookshop on the A515). All in all a pefect stay. Loved it!

Perfect location

A very enjoyable stay at Birch cottage. Comfortable accommodation, well looked after and the garden was a delight. Birch cottage was in the heart of the village and we used the farm shop for produce and they served lovely home made meals. Charles Cotton Hotel was a good place to eat as well. Many walks from the property and the views were great. Shame the weather wasn’t better, maybe next time.

A wonderful week in the Peak District

We had a wonderful week in the Peak District to celebrate a big birthday. Birch cottage was great - clean, comfortable, warm, fully equipped with everything you could need and in a fantastic location for walking, eating cake and drinking coffee and generally relaxing. I'm sure we'll be back.

Lovely Cottage in a Scenic Village

WE had a really good week at Birch Cottage. It is very well appointed, was clean with plenty of crockery, cutlery etc. As there isn't mobile phone signal in the village, it was very useful to have a good wifi connection in the cottage. Hartington is a lovely village and everyone is so friendly. The surrounding area is spectacular and walks along the Tissington Trail and Monsal Trail were really enjoyable. We would thoroughly recommend this.

Clean, spacious cottage in fabulous location

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay in Birch Cottage. A lovely place with friendly, helpful owners (Fred and Lesley). A short stroll from the Devonshire Arms where we ate each evening. Hartington is a great hub for walking or cycling and exploring the Peak District. The cottage itself is really nice, very clean, well maintained, comfortable beds, cosy, all the utensils etc you need in a kitchen - can't speak highly enough about the place. We'll certainly recommend the cottage to others and we hope to make a return visit in the future.

Comfortable and welcoming

This was abeautifully clean, very well equipped cottage. Sleeping for 6 large adults was a bit tight but ideal for a smaller family. The owners werereadily available to share their local knowledge and make us welcome. Hartington is an attractive village and very central to some beautiful, less touristy parts of the Peaks. We enjoyed the local cycle hire to explore the old railway cycle routes. We hope to return

Pre Christmas chill

A lovely place to come to come and relax. The cottage was very clean and well equipped. Lovely touches- tea & biscuits waiting for us on arrival, the fire set, a Christmas tree put up & decorated. Beautiful walking country on the door step. Great Sunday lunch at the Royal Oak. A great stay. Good value for money.

Hartington village cottage - very well situatuated, equipped, comfortable and clean

Perfect for our long weekend (or longer). We arrived to find a generous welcome pack of supplies. Although we ate out at various pubs the kitchen is well equipped and was spotlessly clean as was the rest of the house. The living room furniture is comfortable and the log burner (with a plentiful supply in the outhouse) soon warmed the room. That said, the central heating worked well. If you arrive and wonder where to hang coats you will soon find hooks through the door onto the staircase. The front bedroom is very spacious and there is ample cupboard space. The village shops are nearby, the closest being yards away from the front gate. The staff are friendly and newspapers are stocked. We had a meal at the friendly Devonshire Arms which can be recommended, being a very short walk away. There is a choice of varied walks from the village but Dovedale and other popular places are easily reached by car.

About the host

Hosted by Fred & Lesley Birch

Host profile image
We are Fred and Lesley Birch, and are both local to the area, Fred was born in Hartington and I was a staffordshire lass. We have both lived here for 40 years, and therefore we have a good knowledge of the local area. We are able to advise you on the best places to visit, to shop, to walk/cycle, to eat and to drink.

Why they chose this property

The cottage is conveniently situated in the beautiful village of Hartington. Hartington is an ideal place for visiting the Peak District and for sightseeing the area. The nearest towns which are approximately 10 miles away are Ashbourne, Buxton, Matlock, Bakewell and Leek. Chatsworth House, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire is 20 minute drive away, and Alton Towers theme park is also a 20 minute drive away. The surrounding area is beautiful and there are many scenic walks that you can do from the cottage door, without having to go out in your car. Two cycle trails are within 1 mile of the cottage, where you can cycle for 20+ miles on traffic free trails. The village benefits from 2 pubs, which both offer good food and drink, so again you can park your car up and not have to travel out.

The cottage has a south facing lawned front garden where you can soak up the sun, or have a chilled drink and barbeque. In the winter the cottage is cosy and warm with an inviting log burning stove, to keep away the Derbyshire chills, where you can curl up and sip a nice red wine or perhaps a small tot.

What makes this property unique

Whilst staying in the cottage, you can benefit from our knowledge on the area. Also we are close at hand if anything goes wrong such as the toaster deciding it is time to go the toaster graveyard in the sky, or if you have forgotten to bring a tin of baked beans for the children or maybe some nutmeg or herbs etc. We are always happy to help and to give assistance, but likewise we do not interfere with your stay, we just want you to enjoy your holiday at the cottage.
