About this property

Tastefully renovated, ideally located cottage for a peaceful or active break.

An ideal base for exploring Northumberland or just relaxing, this tastefully renovated stone built cottage sits on a peaceful site with open views of the beautiful countryside of the Till valley. Whether you want to walk, cycle, explore the border towns, castles or beaches or simply slow down and soak up the atmosphere, you will find that our cottage is centrally located, allowing you as much variety as you wish.

The cottage has been in the family for some time but has undergone a total renovation (June 2015), giving it modern comforts whist keeping the period feel of the property. Each of the three bedrooms features an original cast iron fireplace, and the open fire in the large sitting room provides a wonderful focus for marshmallow toasting in the evenings. Our dining area is in front of a double sash window overlooking the large, south facing, walled garden featuring mature trees. From this vantage point you can enjoy the many different bird species which are regular visitors to the garden and surrounding fields and deer are regularly spotted. You may be lucky enough to see a badger, fox or weasel and in the evenings an owl or bats.

We are equipped to accommodate five guests. There is one double bedroom, a second large bedroom with zip and link beds which can be configured as two singles or one super king size bed, and a downstairs single room. We can also provide a travel cot for a sixth, younger guest and have a stone outhouse which can take up to five bicycles.

Local amenities

The cottage lies roughly three and a half miles from Cornhill-on-Tweed to the north or Milfield to the south, both of which have small village shops and pubs. The popular Blue Bell Inn serves lunchtime and evening meals and can be reached on foot in about 10 to 15 minutes: perhaps a little longer on the way back.

Coldstream, a pleasant border town with great views over the River Tweed, is five miles away. It has a larger range of independent shops, pubs and cafes as well as a small supermarket.

Kelso and Berwick-on-Tweed, both of which are well worth visiting, have large supermarkets and most things you would need.

Accommodation

Our large sitting room has two sofas and a reclining chair with footstool arranged around the open fire and a dining table with five chairs in front of the window, overlooking the garden. There is a Flatscreen TV with integrated DVD player, a music system and a selection of DVDs, CDs, games and books.

The kitchen contains an electric cooker and hob, a washing machine, a slimline dishwasher and a microwave, as well as a good range of cooking and baking equipment. The adjoining pantry contains a fridge freezer and has ample storage space.

Bedroom one – a large room overlooking the garden with zip and link beds which can be configured as a superking size or twin beds as required. It has two bedside tables, dressing table, linen closet and a large wardrobe.
Bedroom two – a double bed with wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside cabinet.

Bedroom three – a downstairs bedroom with single bed, chest of drawers and bedside table.

Bathroom with cast iron bath, shower over the bath, original basin and wc.

All bedrooms overlook the garden.

Most relaxing week in well equipped cottage
The property is extremely well equipped. The owner has clearly taken trouble and answers any texts very quickly. The bedrooms, and lounge/dining area are spacious and comfortable. The kitchen has everything but can be cold. The downstairs bathroom feels a little spartan and is approached along a corridor. That said, it was a fine stay and a very convenient location for the coast, National Park and the Scottish Borders. Recommended.

Roomy, comfortable accommodation in a beautiful setting
A great place for a family holiday. The cottage is equipped with everything you could need, the beds are comfortable, and the setting is amazing. Lots of places nearby to visit/discover. Would love to come back again. A wonderful holiday!

Great holiday
We had a lovely time in this cottage. It was very cosy but also spacious enough for our family of 4. The garden isn't really accessible and WiFi would have been useful for checking places etc but on the other hand it was a bit of a wake up for our teenager! I would definitely recommended this property and the area. Just lovely.

Great location for active holiday
Property was very clean and tidy seemingly recently decorated with all the facilities we required. It is situated within a working farm, but was very peaceful and the wildlife in the surrounding countryside wonderful.

Rustic charms in a lovely rural location
Not recommended for someone looking for 5 star luxury but we liked its simple rustic charms and the location. Despite it being August we got good use of the fire and even spent a rainy day in playing the games and watching one of the DVDs. Double mattress needs changing but Joanne says she’ll get a new one. Lots of things to do near(ish) by like Bamburgh beach, Holy Island, Berwick, walked into Etal over a ford, St Cuthbert’s cave. If you’re looking for a simple but well-equipped (especially the kitchen) cottage in a very rural spot, this might well be the one for you

Lovely place!
We had a lovely stay at the cottage, and the communication with the owners was great all the way through! Very comfortable and spacious with everything we needed, which made our stay with our two young children a real pleasure. We loved the quiet location, and the kids enjoyed the farm setting and all it had to offer. A short drive away to some lovely villages, and a good base for exploring Northumberland in general. Highly recommended!

The rooms are fine and Nice furnished. Electric heating works Quickly and the fire is easy wording. Only to Get into the garden you have to pass the neighbours garden. Lots of public footpaths in the neighbourhood.

A lovely cottage in a stunning location.
A perfect base for exploring the wonderful Northumberland countryside. The cottage is adequately stocked and is ideal for walking/cycling/running straight from the doorstep into the stunning countryside. Great for a family of five who enjoy the outdoors.

characterful cottage in lovely rural setting
Had a great family holiday week - lots of lovely things to do right from the doorstep - and loved the peace and quiet and the swifts nesting in the eaves. Spit-spot clean and neat and lovely bedroom decor and furnishings. Kitchen really well equipped - and with picnic kit too! Really good to have a decent freezer, plus a dishwasher and washing machine on holiday. Made good use of the thoughtful walking books, bird-watching guides and maps - and the games in the cupboard! Only slight disappointment (hence 4 stars rather than 5) was that the lovely photos of the garden didn't show that you access the garden by going via the rear yard, round the neighbour's cottage and through their garden, so my vision of sunny summer evening drinks and maybe eating supper in the garden didn't feel practical. (Sure they wouldn't have minded, but it felt like a bit of a trek for eating outside). Thanks for a lovely week in your cottage - and all your help in our arrival. We had a great time.

Keurig, netjes, zeer compleet
Heerlijk huis, mooi ligging, vriendelijke, behulpzame buren. Ik miste een tuinset en een deur rechtstreeks naar de tuin maar anderzijds zijn we elke dag op pad gegaan dus niet een heel belangrijk gemis. Prachtige area!

Spacious rooms. Ideal location
The photos don't do the house justice. The lounge/ diner is spacious but cosy with a roaring fire that is easy to set. The bedrooms are all excellent. Autumn walks from the door take in Ford and Etal and Flodden Field. The College Valley is very close, with a remarkable solitude for somewhere so beautiful. You can walk high or stay low, there is a huge choice of unspoilt countryside. An evening walk to the pub, across the field and through the woods became a regular for us.

Rural retreat
A great base for exploring Northumberland and the Borders, and getting away from the bustle down south. The cottage is comfortable, with spacious rooms and most mod cons (no wifi...). Excellent collection of OS maps for exploring. We avoided the tight parking by the cottage and parked instead ~20 yards up the lane with no problems. Pub within walking distance!

Lovely cottage in peaceful location
We had a lovely holiday in this charming cottage. It was so homely to come back to after our days out and sit by the open fire. The location is very peaceful. We were able to cycle with the children on the very quiet roads straight from the door. It is also well located for exploring North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. We especially enjoyed going to the Bluebell Inn for great food and real ale, just a short walk over the fields behind the cottage.

Lovely cottage in beautiful and quiet location.
We thoroughly enjoyed our winter stay over New Year. The cottage was clean and tidy, with a well equipped kitchen and comfortable rooms. We all loved the location, easy to get to our favourite Northumberland haunts and also the chance to explore the Cheviots inland. Many thanks!

Heerlijk!
Een aangenaam en zeer sfeervol huis. Alles voortreffelijk verzorgd, schoon en compleet. Prachtig gelegen, uitzicht over de velden. Rust alom. Prima startpunt voor zowel de kust als het binnenland, inclusief Schotland. Op loopafstand gezellig en authentiek restaurant. Hier willen we nog wel eens terugkomen.

Calm, peaceful and relaxing break
The newly refurbished cottage , freshly painted, newly carpeted with a smart new kitchen made a good base for our first holiday in Northumberland. We were pleasantly surprised with the range of games, dvds and cds available for those rainy days and cosy family evenings and a good number of maps and guide books were available for long walks and site seeing around this picturesque and peaceful part of the country. The cottage is well situated for easy access to the attractive Scottish Border towns and to Berwick-upon-Tweed , Lindisfarne and the beautiful sandy beaches and stunning coastline along the northern end of the county. We were pleased with our accommodation and its pastoral surroundings providing a peaceful and relaxing setting for our holiday.

Charming holiday cottage
We had a lovely stay in this characterful holiday cottage. The cottage is very well equipped and has comfortable beds and crisp linen. We found the cottage to be very well positioned for visiting all that Northumberland and the nearby Scottish Borders have to offer. We particularly enjoyed our trip to Floors Castle in Kelso, as well as visiting nearby Alnwick and the beautiful Northumberland Coast. Within a short walk there is also a pub serving great food. Highly recommended!

Perfect holiday cottage in a good location.
This is a perfect holiday cottage in a good location for exploring Northumberland and the Scottish borders. It has everything you could wish for and we particularly liked the lovely white bedding and towels. It is just off the A697 but sufficiently far away from the road to be very quiet and give an excellent night’s sleep. The owner was very helpful to us and also provided lots of maps and brochures of local attractions at the cottage. We would thoroughly recommend this property.

About the host

Hosted by Joanne Iceton

Host profile image
I have been married to my husband, Neil for over 20 years and we have three children who are still at school. Neil is a teacher and I look after the home and our small property business. We have lived in Gateshead for most of our lives but love getting up to Northumberland as often as we can.

Why they chose this property

When we bought this cottage, it was for our own use and this is the first time that we have marketed it to the pubic (June 2015). We looked at over a hundred properties at the time but when we drove up the drive at Crookham Eastfield and saw the garden and views, we quickly decided that this could be the one. We then spent time driving around the local area and doing some specific research, which confirmed that this cottage would make an ideal, central base. And this is what it has been. Our children have grown up here and have always loved visiting. We find that it is the ideal place to wind down and soon after arriving, moods change. We still intend to use it for our own purposes but have now significantly updated the property so that others can enjoy it, too.

What makes this property unique

The renovation, which was completed in June 2015, has brought the cottage up to date in terms of modern comforts but has been done tastefully, keeping the original features such as the cast iron fireplaces, open fire and sash windows. The garden is an important feature, particularly the views over it from most rooms of the house. Sitting with a glass of wine, watching the birds or spotting other wildlife whilst the sun goes down makes for the perfect end to the day.
