Superb Lake House For Your Family Vacation - Trout Lake Waterfront

Now reserving for Summer of 2025. We fill up very quickly. Please contact owner about rates & dates as site availability/rate calculator is limited in creativity and possibility. If you're looking for an outstanding family vacation spot, this is it! Facing south on a gently rising peninsula, the 'North Shore' sits on a 1/2 acre w/121 ft. of waterfront. You can see the lake from 13 of the 14 windows. Large screened porch overlooking the lake (& kids swimming) in which to eat, relax and nap. Clear, clean water, full sun all day, protected swim area for the kids, hard-packed sand bottom (no muck, rocks, weeds or drop off), swim raft, great fishing (we'll show you the spots!), 2 adult kayaks, 1 kid kayak, canoe, paddle boat, Sunfish sailboat, 14 ft. fishing boat w/ 15 hp outboard, trolling motor & fish finder, guest fishing gear, swim & play toys, huge sand play area, hammock & fire ring (firewood provided). Fully equipped kitchen, drilled well, water softener, fireplace & sauna. 1/2 mile off main road, no noise, traffic or distractions. Bunkhouse gives kids or 2nd family their own space. You won't find a more kid/family friendly place any where! (Additional photos, especially fish, emailed upon request.)

A Year Round Get Away: Although primarily a summer rental, 'The North Shore' is fully insulated and is available throughout the year. The bass fishing on Trout Lake is excellent. We swim early June to mid-September. Being a short drive to the high peaks of the Adirondacks we afford a wonderful, laid back and relaxed alternative for leaf peepers to get away in the evenings from the hustle and bustle of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. 'The North Shore' is available for St. Lawrence University commencement (7 night rental), Family & Reunion Weekends (7 night rental) or anytime you come to visit your son or daughter at any of the area's colleges. Winter is perhaps our best kept secret: snow shoe, back-country XC ski or fish the lake and come on in for a sauna and an evening around the fire. Snowmobile trails are located nearby. In the winter bed space is limited to 6 (or 7). Long term rentals and romantic weekends are also possible, and we'll try to work with anyone's schedule or needs.

Fishing: Owner is a NYS licensed fishing guide and will show you the hot spots and the most effective lures and rigging; and take you out fishing if desired/possible. Trout Lake is stocked with Rainbow Trout & Lake Trout each year and has an abundance of native Smallmouth Bass (owner caught and released 21.5 inch 4.85 lb. SM October 2009). Other species include: Largemouth Bass (22 inch caught off dock summer 2010), Perch, Bullhead, tons of Rock Bass and Sun Fish for the kids to catch. Rainbow Trout are plentiful and fairly easily caught from mid to late spring. As for Lake Trout, there are some real monsters if they are your thing and have the patience (owner caught 39 inch 17lb. Laker April 2010). NYS regulations allow fishing for Rainbows & Lakers on Trout Lake beyond the usual October 15 cut-off. Bass season opens June 15 through November 30th. Fishing boat included with rental is fully equipped (fish finder, down rigger, etc.). For NYS Fishing License information go to http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html.

Sailing/Boating: Sunfish sailboat included with rental (new sail and rigging). Learn to sail, GREAT fun. Trout Lake, particularly at our end, is excellent for sailing.

All forms of boating and jet skis are allowed on Trout Lake. The numerous Island provide quieter waters away from the main body of the lake making it excellent for canoes and kayaks.

Day trips options include: The Wild Center in Tupper Lake (1 hr.), Lake Placid and the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains for shopping, dining and hiking (90 mins.), the 1000 Island Region of the St. Lawrence River (1 hr.), the Canadian national capitol Ottawa (1 hr. 45 min.) 4 golf courses within a 30 min. drive, and the Mohawk Casino & Resort (1 hr. 15 min.).

Lake, sun, boats, s’mores, and family meals with a soft breeze off the water
We had the best adult family vacation in years! Some of us laid on the hammock, some of us sailed, kayaked, boated, fished, swam, played can jam, corn hole, read, or watched the NBA playoffs. All of us ate meals on the screened porch with the lake breezes playing in the wind chimes and enjoyed an evening fire.

Beautiful views, very clean vacation spot
The home was very clean, comfortable, well stocked, and had long views down the lake. We stayed for the weekend to visit St. Lawrence and it was great! Rev. Mike met us and gave us a short tour of the home. Would definitely come back.

Perfect summer getaway
Everything was easy, available and just what we were looking for -- a week of relaxation at the lake! Plenty of toys both inside and out to keep us as busy --or not -- as we liked. Couldn't ask for a nicer host in Mike, thanks again for sharing your beautiful property.

FABULOUS!
Photos do not do this house and lake proper justice. House has every possible amenity, tons of boats, toys and things to do. Extremely clean and well kept. Appreciated Mike taking us out fishing to show us the "spots" and his hospitality at every turn. Firewood was even included. Front porch overlooking the lake is fantastic. Would recommend without hesitation or reservation (well, you should get a reservation). Looking forward to returning next summer.

No schedules to keep here!
This was our 2nd trip to Mike and Linda's home on Trout Lake. First trip was with extended family 3 years ago. We were so happy with our first visit that we knew we would be back. This visit was just with immediate family (4 adults and 2 teens). Beautiful piece property on the North Shore; wish we could post pictures here (we took so many). So much provided with the home inside and out; definitely a home away from home. Family enjoyed kayaking, canoeing, swimming (floating dock hit with kids), fishing (off dock and from boat), sailing (husband's favorite thing to do) and Mike personally took time from his schedule to take kids tubing/water skiing. Reading in the quiet mornings by the water and lots of laughs playing cards in the screened-in porch every night before heading out to campfire for s'mores! The hospitality of the Catanzaro family is exceptional.

Beautiful and peaceful time for all!
Our family of 7 and two additional small children had plenty of room and loads of fun at the cottage on Trout Lake. The swimming was excellent for both adults and children. The fishing boat was ideal and there were many other water activities to enjoy. The cottage was very clean and definitely adequate in space. Our favorite hangout was the huge screened in porch. The owner was very accommodating in every way. We were looking for a peaceful, quiet, and relaxing rental and found it here!

Great Family Vacation
A fantastic lake house on a crystal clear lake! The home is comfortable, clean, fully stocked with all the amenities, and a view that looks like it comes from a magazine! Our family of 5 had plenty of room, and when the other 4 extended family members showed up - we still had plenty of room! The bunkhouse was a hit with the kids along with the kayaks, tubes, canoe and fishing boat. We took advantage of all it had to offer. The owner welcomed us like we were apart of his family. Evenings were spent staring at the sky full of stars and watching movies from the enormous movie collection. It was an easy trip into town for groceries (the roads are a little bumpy) but the scenery is beautiful.....deer, ponds with a beaver den, milk farms and lots of open spaces. If your looking for family bonding, peace and tranquility ....this is the place.

BEST vacation ever!
I wish there were a billion stars to rate our vacation on Trout Lake! We had 2 couples and a combined 5 kids between the ages of 11 and 15 (3 girls and 2 boys). Not only is the North Shore absolutely incredible, you won't get any nicer or accommodating hosts than Mike and Linda! Their goal was to make sure we had our best vacation ever and boy did they deliver! Mike came out 2 days and took our kids tubing, which was all of their favorite part of the trip! They had every water toy imaginable for us and the kids - from a motorized fishing boat to kayaks, to a sunfish sailboat, rafts, a floating dock, a paddleboard and a pedal boat, which we explored the nearby coves on. The best part for me was that not once did I hear "I'm bored"! The one and only day that we ventured away from the lake (a day trip to The Wild Center" and Lake Placid), all the kids wanted to do was get back to "their lake". We had gorgeous weather all week and absolutely hated to say goodbye to our little piece of paradise. If you want a vacation that you and your family can reconnect on and that you can enjoy the simple pleasures of relaxing at the lake, playing board games and yard games, having s'mores by the campfire at night, sitting on the porch or lying in the hammock and reading a great book or sipping a glass of wine, this is the perfect place and the perfect vacation for you. The funny thing was that we live in FL and I so wanted to explore the Thousand Islands but I couldn't pull myself away from the lake for a moment to go and explore - but I wouldn't have changed a single minute of this wonderful vacation! Thanks so much for sharing your paradise, Mike and Linda!

Our favorite vacation spot!
Been coming to the North Shore for seven of the past eight years because it is truly the best vacation we've ever had. I have been hesitant to write a review because they only have a limited number of rental weeks available, and when you find a gem like this you keep your mouth shut. But we're pretty much locked in. We've never had a vacation that was this easy, and seemingly compulsory, to relax and have fun. Every spot on the property draws you to the water and makes you feel a part of nature. The house is super clean and the owners are honest, friendly and respectful. The description is accurate. In addition, it is a nice balance of modern living with a homey, cabin feel. The kids just entertain themselves with so many activities and easy access in and out of the water. We just keep one eye on them from the comfort of the screened in porch or soaking up the sun on the dock. (The wrap-around porch alone is worth the price of admission. Eat every meal out there if you can and at night play cards or one of their board games.) And there are so many peaceful places to read or practice the art of doing nothing. It's a unique feeling of privacy, yet you feel connected to everything that's going on around you. I don't know if there is a word for it but cozy doesn't do it justice. It's simply a well designed space for a get-a-way vacation.

Best Family trip we have taken
This owner makes your stay at his place wonderful. This place has the at home feel to it, and there is no need to leave the house to keep entertained. Our family had 4 adults and children from 3 to 18 and everyone had a great time. Whether you like outdoors activities, reading, watching tv, listening to music, swimming or just sunbathing this can entertain all. Highly recommended for any family looking to get away and spend quality time together.

Paradise on Trout Lake
We'll be Back! What a wonderful spot. This year we lucked out with great weather, everyday. The sun-filled dock and beach was the place to be. Lots of water toys to keep us busy all day long. Evening dinner in the screened in porch watching and listening to the loons is magical. The well-outfitted kitchen has everything you can think of to prep and serve family-sized meals. The cozy living room has lots of seating to curl up and watch movies (a great selection provided). The bunkie is a fun escape and allows for added privacy. Thanks Mike, Linda and family for sharing your little piece of paradise. We will be back!

What a great vacation!
This rental home has it all - a great view of the lake, plenty of sleeping space for the family, screened-in porch, wonderful outdoor spots whether you want sun or shade. The kitchen had everything we needed and the property was well-maintained. We loved sitting by the fire pit in the evenings and enjoying our coffee in the screened porch in the mornings. The only draw-back was that we had to leave at week's end! We wished we could have stayed longer! Looking forward to renting it again next summer.

A Superb Lake Get-Away
I've been to a number of cottages on Trout Lake over the years, and I'd have to say that Mike and Linda's place takes top prize for this particular lake. Not only do they have every water toy imaginable (for kids and adults alike), a breezy porch, great swimming areas, a sand pit for the kids, and a view that will take your breath away, but they have the best spot on the lake. Being at the north end they get sun all day long--not just in the morning or in the evening, as any place on the east or west sides would. It's the perfect summer get-away location. This fall, however, I took a short solo get-away, and although I knew I wouldn't be met with summer sun and water fun, I was surprised at what an enjoyable place this is in cooler months as well. Their interior is more than clean and comfortable-- it's cozy. And with hundreds of movies to watch, a sauna to relax in, and a fire to gaze at, you can't help but relax. And did I mention the loons? This is a winner of a stay if ever there was one!

More Than a Picture Can Show
In My ReviewNorth Shore is exactly as the pictures show, but they don’t do justice to the inside. It is very clean as well as comfortable and convenient for many different kinds of activities. I am of the “older” generation and appreciate being in the comfortable downstairs bed very handy to the bathroom. The kitchen is as fully equipped as home and the long counter makes cooking and serving very easy to the high table. One can sit at there and watch the watersports’ group play with the water toys and the variety of birds at the stocked bird feeder. If you are lucky, you get to see and hear some loons. Breakfasts or any meal at the table on the screened porch is a plus. If there should be an unseasonably cold, rainy day, the great room with its fireplace and plethora of sofas and chairs is a great place to snuggle into and read or play games. I have been fortunate to be a guest there and at several retreats for women. It’s a fine place to renew and reinvigorate oneself or the entire family during a good week with the variety of activities available.

North Shore
Our stay here was wonderful! Mike was kind enough to show us around not only the house but that lake as well. The house is wonderfully set up for kids and they enjoyed everything, from the movies and games to the paddle boat and the "pirate ship (sail boat)." Everything you could ask for was included. We would most certainly stay here again and recommend it to anyone who asked!!

About the host

Hosted by Rev. Mike Catanzaro

Host profile image
Our family (Mike Catanzaro and Linda Potter; kids Nicole, Tucker and Arlo) moved to nearby Canton, NY in 2008 when Mike became the pastor of the Canton First Presbyterian Church (www.ChurchOnThePark.org). Our house in town is the church owned manse, and our purchase of the North Shore was to provide equity for our family, a place to enjoy as our kids grew up and, hopefully, a home to which Linda and Mike will move to full time when they retire.
When not being 'Rev. Mike,' Mike plays guitar and sings in the Hazel Pearl Band, does projects in the shop, is learning Tai Chi and is an avid fisherperson running a modest charter business on the lake ('Fishing For Kids').
Linda has worn many hats in her life (running non-profits, working in development, managing the local Farmers Market, artisan baking) but really found her 'thing' while in Canton becoming a retreat coach for women and following a trip to Malawi (East Africa), and together the five other woman on the trip, went on to establish the 'Widows of Grace Widow's Fund' which endeavors to assist women and orphans living in extreme poverty in that country (www.womenofgracewidowsfund.org). Linda currently serves on the board of St. Lawrence Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
Daughter Nicole is the Curator of Collections at the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan ME, and gets back to the lake to water ski every chance she gets; son Tucker is an excellent fisherman and recent graduate of Hampshire College we he studied Recreational Fishing Management (shocker); and, last but not least, Arlo is a recent graduate of Ithaca College majoring in sound and audio.

Why they chose this property

Built in 1947, the North Shore was the first camp erected at the North End of the lake. All materials were moved over the ice to the site (called 'Picnic Point' by the old timers, and favored as prime swimming spot due to the natural soft, sandy lake bottom) as there were no roads in until many years later. In 1939 the concrete docks were formed (all mixed by hand!). In 2020 we celebrated our 83rd year.
During that span, many additions and improvements have been made to the house and site: bunk house (originally known as 'the little camp' which once boasted a galley kitchen, shower and toilet), double-slip boat house (renovated in 2004), shop/garage, second bathroom, kitchen addition, woodshed (built 2013) and expansive screened in porch (tongue and groove ceiling & walls installed in 2012). Current project is the construction of a "She Shack" for Linda.
The North Shore is rented only a few weeks out of the year (we're living there full time during the summer otherwise; and are out there most weekends throughout the year). As such, the cottage is fully stocked and equipped with just about everything one can imagine. One could literally bring clothes, toiletries and food; wanting for nothing else.

What makes this property unique

Though there are many lovely homes on this tremendously beautiful lake, our location really makes this a unique vacation spot. Located at the North end of the lake, we enjoy full sunshine from sunrise to sunset, a wonderful waterfront which is great for young children and older folks due to the ease of accessibility and gentle sloping sandy bottom. And, as we sit out on the point, we always enjoy a lovely breeze, with no bugs and just about as few skeeters and black flies as you can imagine (if any) while still being located in a lovely wooded spot in the 'North Country.' (In 15 years we can count on one hand the number of times we've needed bug repellent, all in the spring during black fly season; even then, more of a convenience than a requirement.) We also have the benefit of well water for drinking (delicious) and non-potable uses.
