Ideal location
Birch Cottage is in a very good location for exploring and walking in the Peak District. We enjoyed our stay very much. The cottage was very clean and comfortable, though Covid restrictions meant it was not as well equipped as normal.

Lovely cottage in picturesque surroundings
My partner, baby and I had a lovely and very relaxing time in Fred and Lesley's cottage. The wood burner was lit and there was tea and nice biscuits, on our arrival, which was a lovely, welcoming touch. The cottage was very clean and well equipped and catered perfectly for our baby, with high chair and stair gates. The village of Hartington is idyllic and surrounded by beautiful Derbyshire countryside. We went on walks most days, including to nearby village Biggin, to have a pub lunch. We would have no hesitation in recommending Fred and Lesley's cottage and have already done so to family members. Thanks very much for making us feel so welcome!

Loved it!
The cottage exceeded all our expectations. Lovely and cosy with a gorgeous modern bathroom. Loved all the personal touches such as the fully stocked tea and coffee cupboard and make up wipes in the bathroom. We had a 2 year old with us and the cottage was equipped with everything we could need including stair gates which alleviated a lot of stress! Will most definitely be staying again, thank you so much.

Excellent hosts, great location, cottage well-equipped and very homely
Welcomed by Lesley and all questions answered about the local area, including some great recommendations, which made our holiday. Cottage was just perfect, very cosy, clean and what we needed for a relaxing break away. Lesley also put in all the extras to accommodate our 18 month old, which made our stay easy. Hartington is just beautiful and the cottage is in a superb location, with the local pub, shops and hundreds of country walks literally on the doorstep. We also made use of the BBQ and garden furniture, which was also a bonus to have when the sun was shining! Would definitely stay here again.

Amazing!
We spent a week in Beech cottage with 4 adults and 3 children under 4. Hartington is the perfect base with two really good pubs, two lovely cafes and two shops all just moments from the cottage. The cottage itself beat all expectations. Big enough for us all but cosy. It was always warm and every need was met. The attention to detail by the owners was unexpected. They obviously care deeply about their guests and their business. We stayed during "the Beast from the East" snow storms and it was minus 13. We were snowed in and the owners sent us weather updates and allowed us to stay longer than we had paid for until it was safe to travel. We spent more time than we had imagined we would in Beech cottage and it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Whatever the weather, I can't recommend it enough. We will be back.

Hartington is a hamlet, made up of homely cottages like Birch and Beech which are little Gems
Lesley and Fred are the most welcoming of hosts, on hand if you need any help but not in any way obtrusive. Their cottage met all our expectations and then some. Beech Cottage has so much charm and was so clean and warm, with it's central heating and support log fire, very comfortable beds and such an extremely well equipped kitchen that the chef in our party was delighted with all of the range and quality of the available cookware. Lesley used her insider connections to personally arranged a table for us at the 'The Devonshire' for dinner on our fist night, which was fully booked despite being a Sunday evening, we would never have got a table it really was all reserved. Jan and Dave could not have been more hospitable but it was the food that was truly remarkable and we both enjoyed the best lamb shank we have ever tasted which was served to us with winter veg in the most delicious flavorsome sauce. The wine list was good and we chose Dave's best Portuguese red to accompany our meal. The village has every essential you might need to fulfill a holiday dream come true such as a cream tea in the local post office or getting all your daily food stuff in 'the village shop' such as veg n fruit & home made cakes and fresh bread and a deli counter, this bygone hamlet also boasts the best award winning cheese shop, its absolutely awesome, we brought loads home as gifts for friends and family. You can wander around the antique shops or watch the ducks on the village pond after a day walking or driving around some of the best breathtaking country side views that England has to offer, mostly farm land with charming dry-stone walls which I found totally enchanting. Ashbourne and Buxton are charming little towns close to the cottage and have lots to offer in terms of of really good quality shops along with charming little independent shops. Buxton is a spa town and has the most amazing arctitecture I really want to come back here and bring all the family. Our cottage slept 7 and I think Birch cottage which is adjoining next door has a similar capacity we are 10-12 so it should work out well for us to bring all the grand children for a trip to Abraham's Heights and wear them out on the much loved walks around scenic Dovedale.

Perfect
Beech cottage is set in a beautiful characteristic village within easy reach of nearby amenities. The cottage itself is very well equipped and has everything you need to make your stay as stress free as possible. The owners have thought of everything, from a welcome tray of tea, coffee etc to shower gel and cleaning products. There are instruction manuals for the electrical goods, fire and recycling. There is also a comprehensive guide to the village, nearby amenities and local walks. In my opinion the owners have thought of everything to ensure a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable experience

About the host

Hosted by Fred & Lesley Birch

Host profile image
We are Fred and Lesley Birch, and are both local to the area, Fred was born in Hartington and I was a Staffordshire lass. We have both lived here for 40 years, and therefore we have a good knowledge of the local area. We are able to advise you on the best places to visit, to shop, to walk/cycle, to eat and to drink.

Why they chose this property

The cottage is perfectly situated in the beautiful village of Hartington.
Hartington is an ideal place for visiting the Peak District and for sightseeing the area. The nearest towns which are approximately 10 miles away are Ashbourne, Buxton, Matlock, Bakewell and Leek. Chatsworth House, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire is 20 minute drive away, and Alton Towers theme park is also a 20 minute drive away.
The village and the surrounding area is beautiful, and there are many scenic walks that you can do from the cottage door, without having to go out in your car. Two cycle trails are within 1 mile of the cottage, where you can cycle for 20+ miles on traffic free trails. The village benefits from 2 pubs, which both offer good food and drink, so again you can park your car up and not have to travel out. The cottage has a south facing lawned front garden where you can soak up the sun, or have a chilled drink and barbeque. In the winter the cottage is cosy and warm with an inviting log burning stove, to keep away the Derbyshire chills, where you can curl up and sip a nice red wine or perhaps a small tot.

What makes this property unique

Whilst staying in the cottage, you can benefit from our knowledge on the area. Also we are close at hand if anything goes wrong such as the toaster deciding it is time to go the toaster graveyard in the sky, or if you have forgotten to bring a tin of baked beans for the children or maybe some nutmeg or herbs etc. We are always happy to help and to give assistance, but likewise we do not interfere with your stay, we just want you to enjoy your holiday at the cottage.
