Feel like a local
This rental is in the Uptown neighborhood close enough to walk to great restaurants and a streetcar stop. It was the perfect place for our family of four. We loved showing our teen sons New Orleans especially since our oldest is a foodie. We loved Seafood Sally's, Pascale's Manale (especially talking with Oyster shucker, Thomas "Uptown T" Stewart), French Truck Coffee and August. We highly recommend booking an airboat swamp tour and checking out the WWII museum. We also enjoyed talking with Jarrod about some of his adventures growing up in the Crescent City. New Orleans is one of my favorite places to visit so I'm sure we'll be back and hope to stay at this property again.

Perfect Uptown Apartment
The apartment was lovely and very comfortable. The bedrooms were spacious and the secondary bedroom worked well for our group because of the two beds. Jarrod was very responsive and could not have been more helpful. The children’s playground across the street was perfect for our grandchild when he needed to move. We were able to walk to the streetcar, nearby restaurants and Magazine St. We all loved our time there!

basic accommodations in a nice neighborhood
We felt like the rental was being managed the same as a Mardi Gras party rental when we are two parents with a teen doing a college visit. I think it will be nice once they figure out who they want to rent to and how to set it up. We have stayed at several VRBOs and this seemed to be in an entry level category. We were required to purchase additional insurance (or give the owners an excessive deposit) over the initial deposit which I have never seen outside of large event weekends. The kitchen supplies were minimal (plastic party cups instead of water glasses, only 4 spoons, a used sponge, we needed to ask for dishwasher detergent, and bought our own hand soap because only one sink had it). The bedding and furniture was tired looking and the bedspread was not cleaned. There were new towels and a snack basket which was appreciated. I realized I forgot to leave the backup keys and offered to overnight them knowing it wasn't rented for another 2 weeks and they had keyless entry. Instead they are deducting money to re-key the door..

About the host

Hosted by Jarrod Broussard

Host profile image
My wife and I have lived most of our lives in New Orleans. We've traveled extensively, and hosted guests from all over the world for over a decade. Hospitality is very important to us. We've rebuilt over 90% of this house since Katrina and you're invited to experience, enjoy, and share in what we've been able to accomplish. We've gone out of our way to make sure this freshly reconstructed and renovated private guest space is designed to accommodate groups of up to 6 people as comfortably as possible. The bedrooms are extremely spacious and the property is easily accessible from the ample on street parking on the block due to the low density of the neighborhood and the park directly across the street.

Why they chose this property

The property was originally built in 1907 as single story pier and beam structure with a large, unfinished attic. Due to flooding in the 1920's the property was elevated about 10 feet (adding a ground floor raised basement). The foundation piers were demolished and replaced with a balloon framed floating slab foundation. From the late 1930's through the late 1960's there was very little municipal flooding in New Orleans. My father purchased the property in 1972 from the family of William J. Guste. Guste served for several years as the elected Attorney General for the state of Louisiana. In May of 1973, the property flooded. The property would flood at least 4 additional times between 1973 and 2005 when New Orleans was impacted by Hurricane Katrina and levee breaches and failures caused post-storm flooding to over 80% of the city. The property had about FOUR FEET of water in it because of the levee breeches.

My father also passed away a few months before Katrina, so I purchased the property from his estate in 2007. Due to the post-Katrina flooding, and the frequency of flood claims, the property qualified for elevation through a program called the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). Although the property qualified for elevation as early as 2006, it took various government entities and the HMGP until near the end of 2017 to apportion funding and approve the elevation and reconstruction of the building.

In December of 2017, construction commenced on detaching and elevating the top two floors of the property and removing and replacing the 1930's foundation and raised basement. A new foundation of piers and footings was constructed along with an actual ground floor. It was a long process. The elevation and reconstruction grant was completed and closed out in October of 2019.

What makes this property unique

The reconstruction and renovation of the house has allowed me to turn it into my family's forever dream home. We were able to construct two completely new and separate apartment spaces on the ground floor and modify the existing structure while preserving the unique character of the original building. I was also able to reclaim about 9,000 square feet of antique heart pine flooring, which has been used throughout the ground floor and other places in the building. Visitors are likely to meet warm and outgoing members of my family residing at the building, but they are also able to enjoy the very best of the marriage between Victorian are architecture and modern conveniences whole teams of experts were able to effect throughout the recently completed renovation and restoration process.
