Amazing dog friendly house

We fell in love with this place. The views and sunrises were memorable! I am not a morning person but got up every morning to see the sun rise. We loved the geodome and the interesting features. It was wonderful to have 3 acres of fenced in yard to let the dogs roam. It was perfect for me and my siblings to meet up so our dogs could play.

Dome home oasis

What a delightful property to relax and be cozy comfortable in. The best part for us was the accessibility of the interior. I use a walker and need a recliner to sleep in. There was no problem getting around inside. Slight challenge with the outside stairs but they were very sturdy and newly built. Highly recommend this property

Starry, Starry Nights

The three of us--my wife and I and our Great Pyrenees--stayed at the dome for five days and loved it. The dome itself is wonderfully spacious and comfortable. Inside, the hosts had provided everything we might need; outside, the deck and three acres of fenced in woodland were perfect for our pooch. The dome is in the Mimbres Valley, within easy driving distance to Silver City and the Lake Roberts area. The surrounding hillsides are lovely, and being out away from the city, the dome is a truly peaceful refuge. And the stars at night--wow! We would gladly stay at the dome again!

Beautiful space

I'd never been to that area of New Mexico before and must say it is lovely. Enjoyed the quiet and beautiful night skies from the deck. Will admit that the spiral staircase was a little too much for us to manage at the end of the day. The geodesic dome is definitely cool.

Wonderful Home Base

Easy access to Silver City, Gila National Forest, and many other amenities, this unique property provides a perfect home base for your stay in southwest New Mexico! We were a group of four adults - one couple and two singles so the only on-suite bathrooms was a little awkward, but aside from that, the house served all our needs. Since the location is far from restaurants we (easily) provisioned at nearby Silver City Albertsons (there’s a Walmart almost across the street from it, too) and cooked dinners at the house. We thoroughly enjoyed our whole long weekend there. As suggested in the guest book - check out the stars if you get a clear, moonless night! They are truly amazing. We also loved the history of Adam’s Apple (provided on sight). I’m sure that one or more of our original party will be back. We were all incredibly grateful for the experience.

A beautiful, relaxing, comfortable getaway.

We stayed three nights (4/26-29/24 in this Geodesic Dome home and it is just as described. We were not disappointed. It is very homey and nicely decorated with a colorful decor. Just bring your food and your clothes/personal items. Everything else is provided for you. The kitchen is fully equipped including a Keurig, regular drip coffee maker, air fryer, etc. If you like to cook, there are many different spices for you to choose from as well as a plethora of cook books. There are interesting books and games for your enjoyment. I could go on and on! We went hiking in the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument in Mimbres, NM and to the Catwalk Trail Recreation Area, Gila National Forest in Glenwood, NM. Both are beautiful have a lot of interesting history. Not too far away and definitely worth seeing. If you like stargazing with an unobstructed star filled sky, the large deck is the place to go and relax with a nice glass of wine or… We plan on returning! Donna Simoneau and friends

Beautiful oasis outside Gila National Forest

This property is a real gem! The thoughtfulness of all the amenities from shampoo to dish soap to coffee, teas and a vast array of spices. We were comfortable and enjoyed our stay. The interior is clean, the bedding and towels were clean and in great shape. The master had an adorable seating area. A lot of thought was put in to the decor and it really shows! We would stay here again in a heart beat!

Dome House - Night Sky

We loved our stay at the Geodesic Dome. The house was perfect for us and was just as described. We took advantage of the kitchen and saved some money by making some of our own meals. We were also able to do a couple of loads of wash. The night sky from the deck was truly amazing! … and, there were cows next door.

Dome Retreat

We loved our stay at the geodesic dome. No problems while we were there. Well-stocked with what we needed. Quiet country setting. Deer in yard while we were there. A couple of things to be aware of. Shower in master is odd in a walk in tub and you cannot use the tub part. Also, shower is actually in the master bedroom with no door so be aware if you are there with friends. Loved the history of this house and reading about the family and how it came to be. Lots of outbuildings on grounds and stairs to get into house. Circular stairway to upstairs TV room. Probably not great for small children. An instruction manual would have been helpful as well for TV and checkout information. Just suggestions. Will not deter us from returning again. Great attractions all around. Easy drive to Silver City. beautiful drive to cliff dwellings and Catwalk.

Many of our guests have asked about it since it's such a unique property. So we thought we'd give some reference information. The home was built by my dad and mom about 1990. They purchased the three acres the dome sits on in order to build their mountain getaway and eventually retired to live there full time.

My dad was a PHD mechanical engineer, so he absolutely loved the idea of geodesic domes as invented by Buckminster Fuller. The family first built a geodesic dome in Las Cruces in 1980. Then my dad decided we would build another one for their retirement home.

My mom had polio as a child, and when she got older she had trouble navigating the stairs. So my dad designed, built and installed an elevator that goes between all three floors. It still is in operation, but is shut down since guests would need an operating manual just figure out how to use it!

Why they chose this property

There are many other unique features about the property, as well. It is run entirely on electricity generated from the solar array. There is a 400' well which provides wonderful water. My dad also installed a waste-oil boiler in the basement that for many years provided heat and hot water both from old car oil.

Domes are shipped in "kits" of 60 prefab triangles. There are 30 of one size which make up the six pentagons (5 sided) and 30 of a bigger size which make up five hexagons (6 sided). The triangles in a pentagon are bolted together and then stood up with bracing and then the next pentagon is raised. Then three hexagon triangles are bolted between these two "pents". Then the next pent is raised and three "hex's" and so on until it goes all around the circle. This is called "ringing in" and the structure starts to gain much more stability. That is usually the end of the first day and then the next day the rest of the hex's are bolted in leaving an open pentagon at the top. Lastly, the final five triangles are carefully bolted in place. The triangles are all manufactured on carefully controlled jigs with very tight tolerances - otherwise that last triangle won't fit!

See slideshow of dome construction here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vR2DnumOeVXCWbvqZ6mtw1gt6VaHmxHM9SxuqBEHASU2JhHaWrAyiopDwO0C8cWC-xQqHzWFxNu-RZX/pub?start=true&loop=true&delayms=10000

Another out-of-the-ordinary feature of the house is the walk-in jet tub/shower combo in the master bathroom. This cost more than $5,000 to install. It is unique in that you can walk in, close and secure the door and fill the tub portion for a sit down bath. This was another thing added specifically for my mom's benefit. It can also be used as a traditional shower. It takes a little getting used to, but works well.

My parents enjoyed restoring old tractors and engines. In fact, you can still see a lot of the old parts they had for different projects when my dad passed away scattered around the property. Slowly but surely we are cleaning all that up - they probably had enough projects to last ten lifetimes! The workshop was amazing with milling machines, lathes, grinders and every other imaginable tool all designed to build impossible to find parts from scratch.
