About this property

Semi-Detached Cottage with Pool, Private Terraces, Garden and Mountain Views

Apartment Castallico is very much a semi-detached cottage and has a private entrance, full self catering facilities and outside there are covered and open terraces with fabulous mountain views providing the perfect backdrop to alfresco dining or just supping a glass of the local tinto.

There is a spacious living room with ceiling fan, wooden shutters, central heating radiator and wood burning stove. A double bedroom with ceiling fan, wooden shutters, central heating radiator and built in wardrobe. The family bathroom has central heating radiator, bath with shower over along with WC and hand basin. The kitchen includes a gas oven and 3 ring hob, a fridge/freezer and microwave. Entertainment includes a DVD player with large DVD library, book library and board games.

Outside has 2 private terraces with BBQ and garden furniture. The east terrace greets the morning sun with a cup of coffee and the south terrace is south facing with oodles of sunshine.

The communal pool is shared with a maximum of 4 other persons, and was converted from the farm’s water storage. It is not a lounging pool. When guests are not in the village or exploring nearby, they spend most of their time in their own private garden and open and closed terraces with loungers and umbrellas and pop up to the pool to cool off before returning to their loungers to pick up their book or glass of wine or both!

Everything else you need can be found in the whitewashed village of Lubrin, adorned with bright geraniums and bougainvillea, endless sunshine and narrow cobbled streets leading to uncomplicated squares where butchers, bakers, tapas bars, supermarkets, ATM and just five minutes from your door.

Where to go and what to do!
The Cabo de Gata National Park is one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich coastal strips in the western Mediterranean and is the first Natural land and sea park in Andalucia. The drive takes just over an hour and the route down the mountain, via Nijar, is very dramatic. The park offers walks on marked trails and tracks amongst native scrub and grasses, amidst the scent of wild lemon balm and the distinctive aromas of curry plant and herbs. You are able to follow inland trails and coastline.

The ancient Andalusian city of Almeria(1 hour away) lies sheltered at the base of a bay, proudly dominated by the amazing Alcazaba, a huge Moorish citadel with three walled enclosures dating from 995.

The Alhambra in Granada is a very popular place to visit by our guests. It takes just 2 hours to drive to Granada along the Almeria to Sevilla motorway with stunning view. There is a shuttle bus that takes you from the Alhambra direct to the Plaza de Nueva where it’s a short walk to the Cathedral and Royal Chapel.

Best time to go
June to September for "chill" by way of R&R
October and November for an Indian Summer.
November through May for winter sun or self guided walking or cycling.
February for the start of Spring and the almond blossom.
March to May for bird watching and wildflowers.

Fabulous relaxing holiday
The location is stunning, so quiet yet only a 5 min walk down a track to the village which has 3 bars, 2 supermarkets and 2 bread shops. Very friendly and traditional. The chips at La taska are awesome. Food and alcohol is cheap, lunch for 4 was 28 euros. The pool was great to cool down in and we had 3 different areas to sit in as the sun moved around. Comfortable rustic accommodation, very cool inside as wooden shutters kept the heat out and there is a ceiling fan in the bedroom. There are 2 apartments on the ground floor and the owner John's accommodation is above although he doesn't live on the premises. Then a separate apartment to the side, each had its own own private area/s. The flowers all around are so pretty and you can walk for miles or relax in the sun, the breeze was pleasant in late June and needed in the hot sun. It isn't easy to find and the roads are windy but it's worth it when you get there. Not recommended to arrive in the dark. In daylight the views driving through the mountains are spectacular. About 45 minutes drive to Garrucha and Mojacar where the sea was warm with great waves to play in. There is also a Lidl in Garrucha to stock up. Mojacar Marina is a great course to play for high and low h/c. Aguilion is an hours drive but we'll worth it, spectacular views and it's set in the mountains. A car is needed because it's so remote. The owner, John, was very efficient when we needed help with anything and always at the end of the phone. I would recommend this as a beautiful rustic get away to relax and enjoy traditional Spanish life with the locals. We were lucky to have nice couples staying at the same time, Mike and Caz who we shared a drink with on their last night and Jeanette and Peter who loved the local walks. A bit of a gem, only real downside is finding it.

Geweldig leuk huisje

A Great Holiday in Rural Spain
We have just returned from a two week holiday at this property. We had initially only booked one week here and then a week on the coast at Mojacar, but on arriving in Mojacar and seeing how busy and hectic it was we returned to Lubrin for a second week. The property is now being managed by Paul & Sarah who are a very friendly and welcoming couple, nothing is to much trouble for them. They have a very good knowledge of the local area and were able to recommend some excellent restaurants in the area ( we especially liked La Montana which is situated on the road between Lubrin & Bedar). We stayed the first week in the main house & the second week in the 2 bed converted outbuilding. Both properties were very good with all the necessary equipment for a self catering holiday. We especially liked the 2 bed property which was modern and spacious and had its own plunge pool. The area has some excellent walks, and you will find written guides in your room to 5 routes, as it was July and very hot so we only did the short 7km central walk, but we hope to return next year in May to try some of the longer ones. The property is only a short 5 minute walk in to the beautiful white washed town of Lubrin, here you will find all you need for day to day living including bars,a couple of food stores,2 bakers, a weekly market and an ATM if you need some cash. We would recommend this property to anyone who would like a holiday in rural Spain away from the hustle and bustle of normal life. We would just like to say a big thank you again to Paul &Sarah for looking after us and making our holiday such a special one ( we really enjoyed our evening spent with you in La Taska watching the football and having a few beers). Good luck for the future and stay in touch, hope to see you next year. Nigel & Tina

Characterful cortijio in a quiet location ,walking distance from Lubrin with views of the mountains.
Enjoyable stay in an away from it all location. Used as a base to explore the area. Lubrin is lovely and a reflection of an authentic Spanish village. Hire car needed since this villa is in a more remote location. The owners Sarah and Paul were very friendly, helpful and accommodating whilst respecting the privacy we needed. The views were amazing and we managed the perfect balance between lazy days and sightseeing.

A winter retreat
We were a fit elderly couple from Shrewsbury UK It was a very relaxing time with plenty of opportunity to be as energetic or not as we liked. Excellent guides to great walks in the mountains available in the property. All basic needs were catered for the house was cosy with central heating and a very efficient wood burner with plenty of logs supplied. The owners were extremely kind and helpful to the point of putting themselves out togo the extra mile..The situation was delightful along with the very friendly village though strong leg muscles were required to take the short route back from the village. The numerous Tapas bars and eateries were friendly diverse and very reasonably priced. Our visit was to escape winter weather and we could not have had a warmer drier month. The walks among the hills amid the pretty almond trees meant we did not hire a car but had we done so there were lots more villages to visit. We would love to return.

Tranquility
I very much enjoyed my week in Lubrin. My hosts were considerate and made me feel welcome. They had provided maps and itemised written details of local walking routes and places of interest and were able to give me information about amenties within the village. The accomodation has been provided imaginatively and is spacious and private, including a fully equipped kitchen. Outside there is room to sit and admire the attractive views across the nearby area. This is an ideal, peaceful place to stay for rest and relaxation or to use as a base to visit historical sites and places of interest. I am definitely planning to return, which is a rare choice personally, as I rarely visit the same place again and have recommended it to friends and family.

Lovely stay in a lovely location
We wanted somewhere off the beaten track and Lublin definitely fit the bill. The Cortijo is very well located, only a ten minute walk from the village, although the walk back is steep. John and Maia made us very welcome, the welcome pack was a nice touch. Plenty of books in the library, if you need any help or advice John and Maia are on hand and very knowldegable. Pool is great for a plunge. The accommodation is spot on with lovely views and great outdoor space, loads of lovely walks close by. We did a supermarket shop on our way from Murcia but the local shops can provide all you need and the prices are very fair. The weekly market is fun and full of local colour. Pubs and restaurants are very good, mostly tapas and menu del dia, don't expect cordon bleu although to be fair we didn't leave the village and I know there are other places close by with more varied menus. Not much English spoken (hurrah) so you'll need to hablar un poco espanol. If you want costa's and Sunday roast don't go, if you like real Spain this is the place for you. Highly recommended.

The most wonderfully relaxing holiday ever
It was just a different holiday. The property was well kept and comfortable - very rustic and in keeping with the location. John and Mair were so welcoming and supportive and John is always on hand to suggest different places to visit which enables you to get the most out of your holiday. We had a mixture of sightseeing and relaxing on beaches and the holiday gave plenty of chances to relax. Most of our evenings were spent in the local village of Lubrin. The village is unspoilt and gives you a genuine feeling of Spanish life. I would certainly recommend this holiday to anyone and we will definitely be going back.

About the host

Hosted by John Vincent

Host profile image
In 1998, after having a holiday home in the Costa Blanca, we visited Almeria to look for a more permanent home for retirement but away from the mass tourism. We stumbled on Lubrin and within the first hour, as we sat in Bar Molino with our wine and tapas variadas and we knew that we had found our Spanish pueblo. After lunch we walked through the narrow streets and observed the children playing “shop” with their cardboard counters and toys they no longer needed. Groups of neighbours were sitting outside the houses talking and fanning themselves to keep cool. It was evident that the family unit was strong and this fact is very important to the reproduction and maintenance of social order. We bought an old cortijo on a 1 hectare finca within a 5 minute walk of the centre of Lubrin. For the next 6 years we rehabilitated the building and converted the terraces into a series of terraced gardens with Almond, Olive and Pomegranate trees set in lawns with borders of Oleander and Grapevines. At the bottom of the land is a well which is now dry but fed a water deposit which we converted to a plunge pool.

Why they chose this property

The landscaping in restful and relaxing and offers an unforgettable experience of Spanish mountain hospitality, from the delightful and charming villagers of Lubrin.

What makes this property unique

Peace and tranquillity guaranteed yet just a 5 minute walk from the authentic, white washed Andalucian village of Lubrin
