Serra de Monchique 'The Garden of the Algarve' Utopia, Well Almost!

The Algarve with its famous pristine beaches and micro climate offers the best year round holiday opportunities for the discerning holidaymaker. Quaint fishing ports and historic cities and villages compete for the tourists attention. Secure family beaches and the west coasts wild surfing beaches offer a broad variety of scenery and seaside activities.

Over 300 sunny days every year make the Algarve, Europes favourite holiday destination. The Serra De Monchique is the Algarve's best kept secret, founded by the Romans which provides a historic backdrop and its natural spring waters are said to rejuvenate and even lengthen our days!

Talking about Romans, it was the Romans that built the stone terraces in Villa Vida Nova's gardens. They were built to retain the excellent soil for growing vegetables and fruit to feed the Centurians and troops, these days the terraces are still there but it's not the Romans getting fat on all that fruit..................

Villa Vida Nova is available on a weekly basis, Saturday being the Check in/out days.

The Picturesque Town of Monchique

The delightful town of Monchique, which is only 2 minutes drive from the villa, has a pretty central square with street cafes in which to while away the time and people watch. There are beautiful gardens to admire and narrow historic streets to explore. By the way, parking is free everywhere in Monchique including the underground car park! There are several supermarkets for you to stock up on supplies, 3 butchers, numerous cafés and a tea room serving delicious home made food, two banks with cash points, two petrol stations, 2 chemists, wine shop, gift shops and newsagents selling foreign papers. Recently opened is the new Intermarche supermarket mall, with a selection of shops, plenty of parking and ideal to stock up your holiday provisions.

Superb Dining for all Tastes and Budgets

There are many excellent yet inexpensive local restaurants, some of the best are within walking distance of the villa. You will be tempted by the delicious regional fare, chicken piri-piri, black Iberian pork, wild boar with plums, lamb casserole, chicken with cherries, pork and prawn cataplana, stuffed squid, grilled fish, local cured ham and smoked sausage, honey and marzipan sweets just to name a few, all are locally produced. There is an amazing sellection of wines and ports to enhance your dining experience, don't forget to try the local firewater Medronho, and for the ladies, Melosa, served from a glass slipper! (You have to search for the slipper!)

The Serra da Monchique

Monchique is nestled in a valley between the only two mountains in the Algarve, Foia and Picota. The Romans who established Monchique , as mentioned above they built, with precision granite terraces all over the Serra de Monchique, you will see them everywhere. Villa Vida Nova nestles in 'Corga das Ervilhas' - Terraces of Peas! Corga is an ancient word not used these days and means 'Terraces'. Our terraces still produce, oranges, tangerines, lemons, plums, peaches, figs, sharon fruit, grapes, olives, cherries of which our guests are welcome to eat. We have also found, various stone hand tools, a bone needle, a bronze spur, a bronze buckle and slate buttons.

There are level walks, steep walks, walks to the top of Foia and walks to the cafes in town. Bird watching is very popular as we are on a major migratory route. Cork oak forests abound and offer welcome shade from the hot summer sun, and after all that exercise kick off your shoes and cool off in the infinity pool. Wind down with a glass of local wine or ice cold beer or test your culinary skills on the BBQ.

From the villa there are many attractions within a short drive. The peaks and contour roads of Foia and Picota afford 360 degree panoramic views, don't forget your camera! For the more adventurous, take some of the side roads and visit deserted watermills or the ghost village of Barbelote with its stunning cascade. The mountains here are quite spectacular and not to be missed ideal for the biker, hiker or just a casual stroll.

Local Spas and Wellness Centre.

The famous village of Caldas de Monchique with its health spa and wellness center is only 10 minutes drive away here you can take in the famous Monchique spring waters and enjoy being pampered in the health salons at either Hotel Termas de Monchique or Longevity Wellness Centre. In summer in the evening, you can listen to local live music whilst dining in the Caldas de Monchique square at Restaurant 1692.

A Short Drive Away.

There are several golf courses, the nearest just 15 minutes drive away, and the new Autodromo do Algarve, F1 designed race track, features various motorsport events and track days and if you are up to it, a stunning go kart track open to the public. The busier tourist areas of the south coast and the town of Portimao with shopping malls, night life, sardine restaurants, sandy beaches and marina is just 25 minutes away. Take a boat trip from Portimao or Lagos to watch the dolphins in their natural habitat.

Shopping in Nearby Portimao.

Portimao has now surpassed Faro to become the shopping mecca of the Algarve and is just 20 minutes drive from Monchique. Boasting the largest shopping mall on the Algarve, Aqua Portimao is situated just 20 minutes drive from Monchique, on three floors with 117 shops, restaurants and a hypermarket, again parking is free. There is an excellent choice including many big names such as Primark, H & M, Zara, Foot Locker, Mango, Massimo Dutti and much more. It is open daily from 0900 to 2400. Unbeatable Value for a High End Villa
We stayed two weeks with our two teenage boys and Granny. Had a super time, the villa was perfect in every way, the beds very comfortable and linen and towels top notch. The lounge is well furnished and we used our Netflix account on the TV though there was a good selection of English programs as well. The kitchen is well equipped and the outside entertainment area was used every day. The views from the villa are quite something, literally, from every window and we sat out late at night watching the sparkling lights along the coast. The kids were in the pool for hours at a time even Granny went in. The kids made friends with the neighbours black lab Duke. We had several barbecues and ate at some of the restaurants that the owner recommended, all were very reasonable with good food, friendly service, it was nice that we were not rushed, very relaxing, our favourite was the wild boar and an black pork, the kids loved the chicken piri piri, Granny liked the fresh fish. We spent quite a few days visiting some of the west coast beaches, Arifana was the best for body boarding but all of them are unspoiled and not too crowded. We spent a day in Lagos which is a very nice town with a lovely marina that do all kinds of boat trips. All in all the villa was very good value for the excellent quality provided and so we have decided to come back next year. We would certainly recommend this villa for any one wanting a quality holiday at a very reasonable price. Well done Nigel

Paradise at last!
We have rented villas on the coast of the Algarve for many years but have grown weary of the traffic, crowds and being overcharged in restaurants for mediocre food. So we tried Monchique, what a revelation! We found Villa Vida Nova on the internet and discovered the cleanest and best equipped villa we have ever rented. The views are spectacular and the location very convenient for everything. There are dozens of quality restaurants serving dishes we never new existed at prices half those on the coast. The town is cute with quaint shops and cafe's, unpretentious, there is an honesty about Monchique, the people are friendly and the place feels safe. We explored superb beaches on the west coast and found country roads which took us to villages, Alferce and Marmelete come to mind and the same integrity was found there. We are sorry that we did not discover Monchique years ago. We booked the villa with Nigel who gave us vouchers for discounts at several restaurants, he also advised us on getting a great deal on renting a car.Monchique and Vida Nova are going to become our first choice for our holidays from now on.

A great family holiday
First time to Portugal and it was jolly good. The owners provided everything we needed and more including cot and high chair, everything in the villa is to a very high standard of good quality and sparkling clean. The pool was warm so we swam almost every day and had a bbq on a few days. I would recommend this villa to any one wanting upmarket accommodation at very reasonable prices. We plan to return in the not too distant future.

Perfection
We had two wonderful weeks at this amazing villa. Everything went to plan, the flights, the car rental which the owner advised us where to get a great deal, we arrived and were so grateful for the complimentary wine, we needed it. We stocked up with groceries at Intermarche and had a BBQ the first night. Hubby and his bro did some great chops and sausage whilst the children played in the infinity pool. We also had a dip later with the pool lights on, that was quite something as you can see the twinkling lights of the coast at eye level. The villa itself looks like it was built yesterday, everything looks new and is so well kept, the maid never stopped working, she was lovely even though we could only grasp the gist of what she was saying. The beds are very comfortable and the sheets crisp, towels fluffy, kitchen was better equipped than ours at home, seriously. We climbed the hill up to the closest restaurant, Luar something? It was brilliant, loads of food great service and small portions for the kids. All in all this has been the best villa we have ever stayed in and would recommend it to anyone wanting something which is a cut above the rest. We intend making this a regular holiday venue, the location suits us very much, we love nature the greenery the peace and quiet and privacy yet we could walk into town, although with the kids we didn't. We are counting the days to our next visit!

Absolutely Fantastic
Stayed here a week and sorry to have to go home. Cannot fault this villa and we have stayed in many far more expensive places. Extremely good value. Superbly appointed, clean and comfortable. The owners have done a great job in creating this lovely holiday home. A very peaceful, safe, private and sunny location with breathtaking views of the coast. Pool was warmer than I expected for October. The villa is everything if not more than what the website portrays. We have booked again for 2018, thank you Nigel

Wonderful
Great holiday. We had 2 weeks at Villa Vida Nova. The villa had everything we needed - a fantastic location, plenty of space, tranquility, and hot sunshine. The villa was very well equipped, including everything you could need in the kitchen for cooking. It was very clean, and included a complete clean at the end of our first week and towel and bed change mid week. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers, so 3 bedrooms was perfect. We rented a car at Faro and used it a lot to visit beaches - mainly west coast quieter beaches. Amoreira was great as it had both a river and beach with waves. Arrifana was our learning-to-surf and belly-boarding beach. We had a number of lazy days at the villa in the pool, and many barbecues. Although we speak a reasonable amount of Portuguese, we rarely needed it as most places that cater to tourists speak English. We are keen cyclists and rented bikes twice from Musette.bike - great service and they provide a range of bikes. There were loads of cyclists going up the hill to Foia, but unfortunately we didn't manage this as we couldn't transport bikes on the car and it would have been too long a day in the heat to drive to the hire location then cycle up and down. They do deliver bikes for 3+day rentals, but we didn't need that long. As well as the restaurant at the top of the drive, we enjoyed A Tasca just above the harbour in Sagres. Our second visit didn't work out though as when we arrived for Wednesday lunch we found that was their closed day! Only thing we would have done different if we had our time over is to be careful over choosing inside or outside dining - some nights it was really hot in the evenings and you could eat outside. Other nights there was a chilly wind and so we ate inside at the villa - we didn't think about this when we booked a table on the terrace at O Luar de Foia! Can definitely recommend - everything was great and Nigel was very helpful with advice etc., as well as providing a brilliant holiday location.

An amazing, beautiful holiday spot
This is one of the best holiday spots we have ever been in - few compares to it! The villa is beautiful, very luxurious and spacious. It was very clean and in an awesome shape both in and outside – perfect service done by the owners and their local staff.  Our hosts have been very welcoming and attentive – from the booking to preparing the trip to quickly taking care of a special request during our stay – a very professional service. It literally was like staying in a nice hotel.  The kids enjoyed the pool and spent ages in it – the grown ups loved the trips to the amazing local restaurants – all cherished the beautiful beaches and the countryside. Monchique is an excellent place to explore the Algarve with good distance to South and Westcoast, historic villages and the Sierra. We look forward to visit again!

Look no further!
Villa Vida Nova offers everything one needs for a memorable holiday. The villa and property exceeded our expectations. There was ample room for the five or us. The pool was a delight and the outside living area was perfect for lounging and dining. The villa is luxurious ans comfortable. All rooms offered amazing vistas of the Monchique region. There is so much to see and do in the Algarve, our only complaint was that it was hard to leave the villa. Should we return to the Algarve we would definitely choose Villa Vida Nova as our home away from home. -Note- do check the villa market list (we did not) as there are some essentials you will want to have upon arrival.

Superb villa and the most amazing view.
From the initial booking to the refund of the deposit this experience cannot be faulted. Nigel, the owner, is a pleasure to do business with. The villa is stunning and very well equipped. The small touches from the pre arrival email, including an overview of the local area and tips on local beaches and restaurants, to the welcome note accompanied by 2 bottles of wine was much much appreciated and indicative of the attention to detail. We arrived a little early and the villa was still being cleaned but we were shown around by a most delightful and friendly lady who made us feel very welcome. We were a party of 4, 2 couples. There was more than enough room and the layout of the villa, master bedrooms on opposite sides of the villa, with a private balcony off each bedroom allowed for privacy if required. I would not hesitate to recommend this villa to anyone wanting high end accommodation with the most stunning views you could possibly imagine.

Beautifull Monchique.
We recently stayed in Villa Vida Nova. A fantastic holiday home established in a very beautifull area, Our booking was made quite short in advance but with the fantastic help of Nigel & Bev everything was perfectly arranged. After confirming our booking we received an extensive welcome information pack. Literally all the details that you need for the holiday can be found in there. We arrived via Lisbon airport which could be used as an alternative for Faro, since the drive towards Monchique is very pleasant and also well worth. Upon arrival at the Villa our kids couldn't wait to get into the pool although the temperatures were a bit chilly in the beginning. In the second week though we had fantastic weather with 25 degrees. Not bad for April. We visited too many places to mention all here but well worth in our point of view is: Lagos & Tavira. Also boat trip out of Benagil to visit the caves is spectacular. Zoo Marine is a great day out for the kids as well. The Beaches in Portimao are huge with plenty of seafood restaurants. We can really recommend Villa Vida Nova. Its an amazing house with 3 large bedrooms and a spacious living room and big kitchen. The Pool is a bit chilly in April but with temperatures going up to 30C in July & August that shouldn't be a problem in the high season. On the warmer days we enjoyed the BBQ at the veranda and great views (you can see all the way to Portimao!). The Algarve is very pretty and has enough to offer to enjoy yourselfs for a nice Holiday. At least we regreted that we had to leave again after 3 weeks and will miss the Villa and Monchique very much! Liefting Family, Netherlands

What a fantastic holiday we had. Stunning villa!
We were a bit anxious about booking directly, but after emailing the owner we were more than satisfied that this was the best way to go. The owner answered all our questions and more so we booked. The Villa is everything the website says it is, the accommodation is 1st class, the views are stunning, the gardens and location just lovely. The beds were the most comfortable that we have slept in, we were 4 adults. The pool was surprisingly warm for this time of year and there were more than enough sun beds and parasols. We had a BBQ almost everyday because the outside eating area is so comfortable and the evenings are warm enough to sit outside until quite late. The local Intermarch supermarket has an amazing variety of meat and fish and great selection of wine, yes we ate a lot! The cleaner was a lovely lady and she keeps the place like a palace, I wish she would come and work for me back home. All in all a truly wonderful place to have an amazing holiday and at such a good price. We will be back again very soon.

Simply amazing
The villa is just amazing the description and photos do not do it justice. It is 5 star luxury and we have never stayed in a villa of this quality before. We have paid the same and more but got the typical mediocre holiday let stuff. The owners have made this paradise. We used the pool and bbq everyday, so well equipped, Wifi was great and free. We found easy drives to either coast and the local restaurants are just so cheap but gourmet food. Excellent. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a perfect holiday. Oh Thank you for the complimentary wine Nigel! See you soon.

The Best Villa we have ever stayed in!
We have stayed in many villas over the years in Portugal and in other parts of Europe. This has been the best by far. We were two families, 4 adults and two children and a baby, we arrived late and it was dark, yet we found the key code, thanks for the torch, nice touch! We were greeted by complimentary wine which went down well after such a long journey and settled down to a restful nights sleep. We knew the views were going to be good for what we saw on the web, and we could see the twinkling lights that night but then in the morning, wow, the views blew us away! The girls went and did some food shopping and came back with fresh fish, wine, etc, Jim and I got the BBQ lit and we had a great lunch and chilled out in the pool. We stayed at the villa most days but went out most nights to eat in some excellent restaurants just up the road. The villa was so clean and well equipped it seemed as though it had just been opened, but I think its being going four years or more. Everything about this villa is tops and no short cuts, the maid was very friendly and efficient. We were sad to leave but have booked for two weeks next year. Hats off to Nigel who handled our booking and many questions that we had, stay here and you won't be disappointed. We broke an umbrella and two wine glasses and expected to pay for them from our deposit, but not so, our deposit was refunded in full. Thanks again Nigel.

Absolute Paradise, what a Gem.
We have had rental villas in Portugal before, last year we tried a villa for rent on the coast and decided that the coastal area was not for us. Then we found Villa Vida Nova when searching the internet and it seemed to be the perfect villa so we booked. Best choice ever. The website does not do it justice. Everything about this villa is top class, the furniture is excellent quality not what you usually find in rentals in Portugal or anywhere for that matter. We enjoyed the outdoors just as much with lots of seating and sun loungers with plenty of shady spots, we had BBQ most nights and sometimes walked up to the restaurant up the hill.So cheap and excellent food. The location is ideal for exploring and the town is a delight and quirky. We will be back next year with friends. The maid was a delight too, very efficient.

About the host

Host profile image
Originally I am from the UK and my wife from Canada. We have lived in the UK, Africa and Portugal for many years but now live in BC Canada and spend our winters at the villa in Portugal, best of both worlds!

Why they chose this property

We were in the business of building villas for expats and so we chose to build this one using our years of experience and putting our skills and dreams into action. We chose this location because of the spectacular views and that the area is unspoiled by tourism yet just a short drive to the best beaches, golf courses, shopping, airport and some of the best scenery in Portugal.

What makes this property unique

The Villa is tucked into the hillside with a Cork Oak forest behind which affords us both privacy and shelter from the cooler North winds in the winter months. We have Oranges, Peaches, Figs, Lemons, Grape Vines and even a Banana tree. Unlike the coastal areas we don't get frost in this area so its ideal for both summer and winter holidays alike.
