Town: Betws-Y-Coed was founded around a monastery late in the 6th Century. It grew very slowly with the development of the local lead-mining industry and today has earned the nickname of âthe Gateway to Snowdonia' and is one of North Wales' most popular holiday destinations. As part of the Snowdonia National Park it is surrounded by miles of unspoilt countryside and ancient mountains and is home to an abundance of wildlife and some rare species of plants. This is a Mecca for walkers, horse-riders and climbers looking to pit themselves against the trials offered by Mount Snowdon. There are a variety of attractions in and around Betwsy-Y-Coed, such as Fairy Glen, a secluded gorge and beauty spot on the River Conwy. The Swallow Falls are also extremely popular and offer a dramatic highlight to any visit. There is a good selection of pubs in the village, with a number of restaurants and shops.
