About this property

Family friendly Cotswold retreat, full of character, local attractions close by

Waterton Stables is an old house, full of character, having been the stable block/groom's cottage for the large manor house nearby, now converted into two dwellings - the 'cottage' for guests which is attached to the 'stables' end of the house where the owners live full-time. The interior is well furnished and comfortable, and has a unique character. Please note, it is not a 'modern' space, this would not reflect it's age or character, but we hope the photos provide an adequate reflection of this.
It is approached by a long drive, with fields on either side, leading to a large courtyard with ample space for parking.
Upstairs, the attached guest cottage has 1 double bedroom, 1 twin and a single bedroom. There is also a bathroom with shower and bath, and a separate wc. Downstairs is an entrance hall, sitting room with large flat screen TV, a dining area and kitchen overlooking the garden. There is also a utility room with washer, dryer, wc and shower.
Outside there are table and chairs, and 2 loungers for guests' use. There is also a swimming pool which can only be used at the owner's discretion; it is very close to the owner's end of the house, so we ask that guests use it for a short time, once or twice a day depending on weather and other use.
The local pub is a 5 minute walk away, and is perfect for an evening meal if you prefer to walk rather than drive. There are many wonderful pubs nearby, many with excellent food, and gardens with view for lovely summer suppers or cosy interiors with roaring fires. There are also many beautiful towns, villages and gardens to visit, and South Cerney, only 2 miles away, is great for swims, boating, etc.. It's a wonderful area for a break.

Fabulous stay in the Cotswolds
This beautiful residence is attached to the owner's property, which means that they are available as necessary, and take a keen interest in the welfare of both the house and the tenants. We felt very "at home" and the property had everything you could possibly need. Great for relaxing and cooking as you wish. Great location in the Cotswolds, walking distance to a very good pub "The Crown" that had Xmas special dinners at this time of the year. Also walking distance to beautiful countryside and just a few miles from Cirencester, the Capital of the Cotswolds. We have stayed in the Cotswolds many times, and this is our favorite VRBO to date. Highly Recommended

Quiet, pretty and perfect base to explore Cotswolds
Perfect for a family of 4 or 5, the children loved the layout - great for hide and seek. Felt very homely and safe. Huge grounds, which we took a footy for. The pub is a short walk/bike ride and is very nice. Cirencester 5 mins in car away, great town, we visited Bourton on the water too which is 20 mins car drive. Gillie very friendly and left us to it. We really did have a cracking few nights here, home from home.

Beautiful place in the heart of the Cotswolds
As a family with 2 teenage children, we were looking for a house in the countryside with three bedrooms and (ideally) a swimming pool as a base for exploring the Cotswolds and the neighboring cities of Bath and Oxford. The house met all our expectations: the bedrooms were well equipped and comfortable and the extra bathroom helped to keep our morning fights to a minimum. The kitchen was well equipped enough for our cooking needs, although it does not have a dishwasher (a fact we had overlooked when booking). There was a door leading to a lovely patio and garden where we enjoyed our morning coffee (thank you, English summer!). We were able to use the swimming pool by arrangement with our landlords Kevin and Gillie, who were extremely friendly and helpful during our stay. There isn't much to do within walking distance of the house, so we were reliant on our car most days - which suited our plans anyway. One tiny negative is the (faint) traffic noise from the nearby highway, but after a few days we almost didn't notice it when we were enjoying the garden and pool. Overall we had an excellent stay, this house is a great base for your expeditions to the Cotswolds.

Great Cotswold Family Cottage
Clean, comfortable and quiet cottage. Great location for exploring the Cotswold area. Visit Avebury for stone circles, Bibury trout farm & garden, Bourton-on-the-Water and Cirencester for shopping & dining/pubs. The Crown at Ampney, just down the road, for Sunday dinner-excellent! Take the train into London from Swindon or Kemble. We enjoyed our stay & highly recommend.

Lovely quiet place to stay in the Cotswolds
Converted stables was a fantastic 3 bedroom 2 bath place to stay southwest of the touristy area in the Cotswolds. The hosts are lovely; there's a friendly resident doggie, a pool, and lovely outdoor seating where we 4 enjoyed the drinks and snacks we'd purchased not too far away at the Waitrose. Thanks for a lovely time!!

Une pause charmante
Très beau domaine. La maison est très grande et fonctionnelle. Elle est un super point de départ pour visiter les Cotswolds, tout en étant au calme entre moutons, lapins et écureuils. Ginnie et son mari sont charmants.

Idyllic Cotswold Retreat
We had a fabulous stay at this property, it was absolutely gorgeous and perfect for quiet evenings after long outings during the day to explore the Cotswolds. The location was central to everywhere we wanted to go, and the home had a cottage feel but with every modern amenity you could need. Gilly was a fantastic host and we hope to come back soon!

Great house in the Cotswolds
This was our second time at Waterton Stables so we already knew that it’s a very comfortable and characterful house in a great location. We stayed in winter last time, so it was lovely to be able to enjoy the garden this time, and the pool which was a real bonus. There is a nice pub only 5 -10 minutes walk away - we had a really good meal there.

Lovely characterful house in the countryside
Lovely warm, comfortable and characterful house in a quiet location. Gillie was very helpful answering my queries before we arrived and messaging to check everything was ok while we were there. The pub in the village was closed for refurbishment - will be great when it reopens as you could walk there from the house up the lane.

We are a family of 4, but our 2 children now live and work in London which is why we decided to open up the house to visitors. It has been wonderful meeting a huge variety of people, from many different countries.

Why they chose this property

The house is full of character and was converted to a house (from a groom's cottage plus stables) at least 30 years ago. Cotswold houses were built with small windows to keep in the warmth but the windows here are large and numerous so it is a light bright house, cool in the summer but warm in the winters. The garden is well maintained and guests have an area immediately outside the kitchen to sit and enjoy the views with a glass of wine on warm summer evenings. There is plenty of peace and privacy.
It is an area of outstanding beauty, with pretty villages, beautiful stone houses and lovely market towns.

What makes this property unique

The house has an unusual layout, good sized rooms, beautiful stonework and a unique character. It is old and this is reflected throughout. We have the benefit of the original courtyard, once large enough for horses and carriages, now giving us ample space for parking for both us and our visitors. We look out on fields, are very private and yet only 3 miles from the lovely market town of Cirencester.
