About this property

Apartment Madrid Downtown Puerta del Sol M (PRE2A)

The House of Forgotten Dreams

In the heart of Madrid, on the bustling Preciados street number 10, stands a majestic five-story house with a carved stone facade. Its large windows and elegant balcony distinguish it from the rest of the buildings, whispering stories of an opulent past.

Built at the end of the 19th century, the house was home to the Aldama family, a wealthy family of merchants. Don Francisco Aldama, a visionary man, had amassed a fortune through his businesses in the Americas. The house was a reflection of his wealth and power, a showcase of luxury and ostentation.

The house's salons were filled with extravagant parties, where Madrid's high society gathered to dance, converse and enjoy the music. The Aldamas were known for their generosity and good taste, and their house became a meeting point for artists, intellectuals and politicians.

However, happiness was not to last forever. In the early 20th century, the Aldama family suffered a series of misfortunes. Don Francisco died in an accident, and his wife, Doña Dolores, became seriously ill. The children, who were still young, were unable to take over the family business, and the fortune began to dwindle.

Little by little, the house faded away. The parties stopped being held, the rooms were emptied and dust accumulated on the furniture. The Aldama family was forced to sell the house to survive, and in 1930, the house passed into the hands of a new family.

The new owners, the López family, were a modest family who had nothing to do with the opulence of the past. Little by little, they adapted the house to their needs, dividing the floors into smaller apartments and renting them out to students and workers.

The house on Preciados street 10 became a microcosm of Madrid society. Within its walls, stories of love, broken dreams, joys and sorrows were lived. The house witnessed the passage of time, wars, dictatorship, democracy and the transformation of the city.

Years later, in the 1980s, the house was acquired by a real estate company that completely renovated it, turning it into a modern office building. The facade was preserved, as a last vestige of a glorious past, but the interior was completely transformed.

Today, the house on Preciados street 10 is a workplace for hundreds of people. However, an air of nostalgia and mystery still lingers within its walls. The old tenants seem to still wander the corridors, whispering stories of a time that no longer exists.

The house on Preciados street 10 is more than just a building. It is a symbol of the history of Madrid, a witness to the passage of time and a haven for forgotten dreams.

The pictures alre accurate. Very clean. Lots of room

Pros: Great location in center of Madrid. Walked everywhere and easy access to all the sights. Metro stop right across the street and surrounded by stores Good air conditioning for hot days and nights Shower was hot and worked well. Cons: Woken by loud drilling and other construction noises every day at 6:30 am. The person who let us in did not speak Emglish so he was unable to tell us anything. The apartment lacked any supplies that are always available in other rentals such as soap, detergent, or even dishwashe cloths. Each of us was provided with 1 towel only for a 5 night stay. Tried to call the service and the phone # given did not work. Overall, it was a fine apartment but by far, it was the worse serviced apartment in 10 years of booking through VRBO

Enjoyable stay in Madrid.

As two retired couples exploring Madrid for the first time, we found this property to be an excellent choice. The location is right in the heart of the old town area of Madrid and convenient to many popular sites as well as the metro. It is within easy walking distance of museums, parks, restaurants, etc. We found a wonderful market right across the street in the metro station! As it is right off of a very busy plaza, noise does carry into the apartment and can make sleeping difficult in the bedroom overlooking the street on the weekends. The apartment was clean and comfortable but stocked with nothing but a roll of toilet paper. Our orientation to the apartment was brief and left us with questions. Our calls to the Home Away rep. were not returned. It would have been nice to have had some information on where to find things around the town as well as how to operate the stove. We never could get the coffee pot to work.

DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!

Owners are liars and extremely unprofessional. Period. They state that they will greet you at the apartment upon arrival but it is a lie. They texted the morning we were arriving saying they were INSIDE THE APARTMENT WAITING FOR US, meanwhile when we arrive we were met by a random, sketchy guy who does not speak a word of English and then asks to take pictures on his cell phone of our documents, ummmm not happening. We felt so uneasy even sleeping there knowing this random man had keys to the apartment and could potentially get in while we were not there or even asleep. Took many calls and texts to the owners before they even answered us and they did not make us feel any more comfortable. They are insanely hard to communicate with. The apartment is in a central location and nice inside but at night lots of drunks and creepy people were hanging out outside our door which make us feel extremely unsafe! There was LOUDDDD drilling and construction going on before 7am, the owners failed to mention that construction was going on. There is also graffiti all over the entrance which was not appealing, again the owners failed to include that part in there photos, had they done so we would have never chose to stay here. After one night we decided to go to a hotel the next day and skip the remaining 3 nights we originally reserved. We attempted to contact the owners to inform them we left but no one ever responded until we contacted VRBO directly to complain. The hotel we moved to was in a beautiful, safe area by the Park, soooo happy we left this apartment. I've traveled to Europe many times using VRBO and never had such a bad experience with an apartment rental. A million better places to stay while visiting Madrid, avoid this apartment and this neighborhood AT ALL COSTS.

Bad experience, untrustworthy.

On day of arrival I received texts from Leticia (owner/manager) that she would meet us at apartment." When I texted I was on the way she said "I am at the apartment".At arrival a strange man greeted us .He didn't speak English,He asked for photos of passports on his cell phone. When we said no to giving photos of passports on a strangers phone, he called "Fernando" who made up some excuses why Leticia did not show up.He claimed to be Leticia's husband, they lied about being in apt/greeting us.The call ended with a terrible feeling, not knowing who these people were.It took about 6 calls, multiple texts for Fernando to pick up.He said Spanish police require passports for travelers -we explained we would be happy to show the owner passports but not let a stranger take photos on his cell phone.area was sketchy, seedy, crowded with suspicious people outside the apt.The doors had graffiti(if it was in pictures originally posted we would have looked for another property.)All night it was loud and drunks were yelling in the streets.strange men followed us down the road, whistling at us On way to the apt.We were afraid.Drilling & banging at 7am.If there was construction owners should have informed us.After one restless night feeling fearful we left the apt & checked into a hotel. We tried to reach them with no response. Our plan was to stay 4 nights but left after 1 night.I texted Them to state we were leaving but again no response. The apt itself was clean & lovely minus a few light fixtures hanging from the wall &broken doorknob. The issue is we felt lied to & deceived.multiple failed attempts to discuss with them to figure out a solution, I contacted VRBO.We received an email from Leticia stating 1. Graffiti? Welcome to the world, that’s not vandalism, is the new Art 2.Nearby Construction-is occurring close enough to be heard within the unit or impacts access to/from the unit."Your only truth, and is half-truth."The email ended with this :" I want your documents on my mail by tomorrow morning, ALL OF THEM, or the Police will come to identify you and all the occupants staying at MY HOME, little liar."We left the apt after the first night and had to move to a hotel for our own safety.I sent emails/texts with no response. We asked property to refund us 3 nights stay as we only stayed 1 night. We are still waiting for that & damage deposit to be refunded This was an awful experience because we were lied to & deceived.whatever you do don't trust these people

Great location

The apartment at Sol is in a great location. Quick access to the metro, shopping, and food in every direction. (plus 2 stars) We found the apartment to be clean and roomy. The air conditioning units worked well. We felt safe. (plus 2 stars) It was nice to have a washing machine, yet we had to lay clothes on various chairs to dry during the day. (plus 1 star) The bathrooms were modern and functional. The hot water heater supports two solid showers in the morning. We were able to stretch this into 3 short showers. For a two bedroom apartment, this was a disappointment. (minus 1 star) The internet worked great for the first three days. For the next three days it was broken and management was unable to resolve the situation. This was problematic as only one of our phones had a data plan in Spain. (minus 1 star)
