About this property

Rustic retreat with panoramic views, tropical gardens, & biodynamic produce!

Pu'u O Hoku Ranch offers a unique getaway for travelers seeking a rustic retreat. You can hike, swim, stargaze, surf, and see a working ranch in action. Pu'u O Hoku is one of the few places in the islands where you can feel Hawaii as it once was. The Sunrise cottage is just a short drive from the black-sand beaches of Halawa Valley.

On the hill above the bustle of the ranch, surrounded by tropical gardens, with panoramic windows offering views over the bluffs to the ocean, the Sunrise Cottage is perfect for romantic getaways or small groups. Master bedroom with a queen bed, second bedroom with two twins, spacious living and dining room, fully-equipped kitchen, two bathrooms, and a shaded lanai.

The Sunrise cottage was built in the 1930s in a classic Hawaiian ranch style, furnished with Balinese and Hawaiian wood and textiles. The cottage is off the grid and runs on renewable energy, the water onsite is from our well.

We can also deliver fresh biodynamic and organic produce as well as fresh beef and venison to your cottage for you to cook during your stay!

This is a charming and unique setting on the Pu’u O Hoku ranch. We enjoyed bird watching , watching the sunrise from the cove in the Halawa Valley, and exploring the lush landscape.

Outstanding retreat

My wife and i spent 4 nights/5 days here and absolutely loved it. Hit a local grocery store on the way in and you really never need to leave this wonderful little bungalow, other than to pick up some dried apple bananas and other snacks at the nearby ranch store. Everyone was incredibly friendly and we had 4 of the most incredible sunrises! Take a nice book or two and some hiking shoes and escape the rat race with this beautiful slice of old Hawaii! Can’t wait to go back!

Lovely Long Weekend

It's the perfect place to get away for some pleasant cabin weather for books, board games, and yard games with the family. Our daughters (6 & 7) had a great time with the garden tour and horseback riding, and Halawa beach is a short drive away.

Great Stay on Molokai

Truly a wonderful holiday destination. The ranch is the best place to stay on Molokai and we cannot recommend Sunrise Cottage on Pu'u O Hoku Ranch highly enough. Nani was so kind from the initial email in January. We arrived at a clean, beautifully appointed cabin filled with locally grown floral arrangements and a refrigerator supplied with a bag of produce grown on the ranch, eggs (the best we have ever eaten!) from the ranch, beef from cattle at the ranch and fruit grown on the ranch. What a delicious treat and we did our best to eat it all and had to get more eggs. Beds super comfortable, great walking trails all around the ranch. Cannot recommend enough the garden tour with Ahiku, horseback riding with Sarah, the store employees Nadia and Cathy, and everyone we encountered at the ranch -- just awesome people, proud of their job, the ranch and their island. We just loved our stay and hope to return.

9 nights at Pu'u O Hoku

Property is just as described. Remote, quiet except for helicopters. Hiking on the property locations changes from day to day due to hunting on the property. Lots of bird song. Good internet access and WIFI. Helpful and pleasant staff.

Pure serenity

My son and I really loved staying at the sunrise cottage. We felt like we had the ranch to ourselves! The fresh food provided was amazing and the cottage had everything we needed. We’ll be recommending it to our friends and family and would love to return.

Magical Time Away

The sunrise cabin was everything we wanted when we disconnected from work. Everything from the location, beautiful scenery, comfy bed, great meat and produce from the host … we could have asked for a more perfect vacation. 10/10 would stay here again!

Beautiful, cozy getaway

My family had been looking forward to this trip for over a year, and I was prepared for something much more rustic but the cottage was wonderfully modern with recently renovated bathrooms, a fully stocked kitchen, and even super-fast WiFi. Even when it was raining hard outside, we felt safe and cozy indoors and it was nice to have almost the whole property to ourselves since no one was in the lodge at the time. Nani was so sweet and wonderful and I was glad we got to meet her in person.

Sunrise cottage

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at the sunrise cottage. We appreciated our host stocking the kitchen with fresh fruit, veggies, eggs and meat from the ranch as our flight got in late and we didn’t have time to grocery shop. We enjoyed a hike right from the cottage up into the hills.

Like stepping back in time…

We loved everything about our stay. Nani was super helpful, ensuring everything was nothing less than perfect. It really was like stepping back in time. The cottage is beautiful and comfortable, the ranch grounds gorgeous and mystical, the produce and meat from the ranch store fresh and delicious. One of those trips that stays with you, a memory in which the mind can wander and take refuge.

Check-in was difficult as it was in the dark and there were no lights on or “house numbers@ but once

The ranch is so respectful of nature, all organic cleaners used and fruits & vegetables are available, awaiting our arrival. Staff is unbelievable, so accommodating and thoughtful!

On the Edge

Rising early at the Sunrise House, I was gifted with an amazing greeting from a Hawaiian Pueo (Owl) that flew up from the canyon below, back lit by the rising sun, and then flew over the house. There is something magical about this place - the gentle breeze that flows through the house, the quiet, the distant horizon, and of course, the stars at night.

Magical stay at the ranch

My partner and I were absolutely enchanted by the sunrise cottage, the ranch and the entire island. The cottage itself is roomy, well cared for, clean and full of beautiful character -- not to mention it's a one-of-a-kind abode on a magical tropical hilltop! We felt very much at home there. Nani and the ranch team were so wonderful, and we want to give Nani and Zoe special shout outs for helping us with horseback and beach adventures. We really felt so lucky to find this place and to spend time there. A true gem which feels harder and harder to find. Thank you so much, Nani and team! <3

Incredible Week at Pu’u O Hoku Ranch

We had an incredible week at Pu’u O Hoku Ranch. Nani and the entire ranch team were incredibly communicative both before and during our stay, and suggested so many wonderful activities both on and off the ranch property. The cottage was amazing, with beautiful view overlooking the green hills of the ranch and glimpses of the sea. The day bed with huge picture frame windows was perfect for afternoon naps. We did all the suggested hikes and made a point to watch the sunrise every morning. We hope to visit again soon.

Lovely get away from it all spot

Was on a mom daughter trip and went to a yoga retreat at the lodge. It was lovely to stay at the Sunrise Cottage and live simply for five nights. Best to buy your groceries in the small town by the airport as there is not much out there. There can be mosquitoes so bring bug spray. Beds were comfortable and great water pressure! I brought some more light to do and laundry as there are no laundry facilities on site. Would definitely stay there again on the island.

About the host

Hosted by Pu'u O Hoku Office

Host profile image
Pu'u O Hoku Ranch is a family-owned biodynamic and organic ranch and farm, rustic retreat center, and sublime getaway on the remote and tranquil east end of Molokai, Hawaii. “Pu'u O Hoku” is true to its Hawaiian name — which means “Hill of Stars”— surrounded by more than 14,000 acres of protected land, immersed in the transcendent beauty of forest, sky and ocean.

Why they chose this property

Our most important work at Pu’u O Hoku is to restore the ‘aina (land in Hawaiian) of our beautiful ranch, from its green pastures that run up from coastal fishponds to Halawa Valley and the sea cliffs that tower above it. We are working on the reforestation of the ahupua’a (or watershed) and reducing the number of deer and pigs in our forest, as well as the sustainable cultivation of our arable lands in order to realize a bountiful land economy. We believe that Pu’u O Hoku, by preserving the fertile east end of Molokai, has a special role to play in bringing the island closer to a food and energy self-sufficient community that can provide for generations to come.
