What a Nice Cabin

I stayed in Cabin 2 for two nights during the Forget-Me-Knot Festival in Cooke City on August 16 & 17. The cabin was quite spacious and very clean. I didn't use the kitchenette much, but it seemed to be well-stocked. It is close to everything but then, Cooke City is small. The nights I was there, it was quiet; the cabin is a bit off the main street that runs through town. I went to Yellowstone National Park two mornings and was back in time for the festival. The park's NE entrance is 5-10 minutes away. I would definitely stay at Elk Horn Lodge again!

Awesome host and property in an amazing small town!

This is a very cozy cabin in a great location with easy access to all of the amenities in Cooke. Short drive from the north east entrance to Yellowstone National Park as well. NP ROAD TRIP!!

Lodge was GREAT, extremely SPACIOUS, and a PERFECT location! We came in through Beartooth Pass (phenomenal scenic byway) and made a pit stop here for our YNP visit. We checked in and were able to drive (a few minutes drive) to YNP NE entrance at dusk for wildlife viewing! AMAZING!! We returned to lodge and enjoyed pizza plus fries at restaurant across street, which was recommended. It was super delicious. Woke up next morning for more wildlife viewing at dawn. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat!!

Wow! Cozy cabin #2 exceeded our expectations. It was indeed cozy, clean, had everything you needed for a comfortable, restful stay. Lisa was super nice and helpful in checking us in and helping us know where to eat as well as other “distractions” in Cooke City. Highly recommend the Elk Horn Lodge if you are traveling to this area of Montana.

Perfect for our outdoor adventure

The cabin was just right and exactly as advertised. We spent two nights in the middle of a 16 day adventure. Second trip to Yellowstone, fished the Lamar River.

About the host

Hi! Jeff and Lisa here. We have been living out our dream since May 2009 operating this family-owned business. We have been captivated by Cooke City since the first time we visited in 1999 and we knew we'd be back to stay.

Why they chose this property

In May 2008, Jeff and Lisa traveled to Cooke City to stay for a week where they found their dream hotel for sale. They talked to the owners, the Hahns, and said if this was next year, we would buy it in a heartbeat. Later that year in the winter, the Ohlingers further looked into owning the hotel but were afraid that it was too big of a risk at the time having such great paying jobs with excellent benefits.

In February 2009, however, the plant that they both worked at, Century Aluminum, closed its doors after 52 years, leaving the Ohlingers and about 700 others without jobs. With nothing left to lose, they decided to take the huge jump and embrace their dreams of owning the Elk Horn Lodge. They sold their new log home that they built themselves and put in a bid for the hotel. The Ohlingers packed up their home in a U-Haul and left their friends, families, and the town they had lived in their entire lives to embark on a new, exciting adventure! After three days of traveling, they pulled their two vehicles and the U-Haul into gorgeous Cooke City, their new home!

What makes this property unique

Our family chose this area as home because of the countless activities. There is so much to do in the summer from wildlife watching, hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, to skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. We enjoy the serenity and adventure of living in such a unique place. We hope you come and find what you have been looking for, just as we have. This rustic mountain town will definitely ease the stress of a hectic day-to-day.

With Yellowstone National Park's Northeast Entrance and scenic Lamar Valley just minutes away, come and experience the wonderful beauty of it all from the comfort of our lodge here in Cooke City!
