A trullo is a traditional Puglian property built from local limestone, with dry stone walls and characteristic conical roofs. My trullo has 5 cones. Trulli were built in the 1700s and 1800s for workers on the land belonging to a local masseria (farmhouse) and are found only in this part of Italy.

Rennovated trulli, such as mine, have had the cones and original building restored by skilled craftsmen called trullista and have usually been enlarged slightly. The property is in a conservation area, so there are strict rules about how this can be done sympathetically and traditionally. The trullo was restored about 25 years ago by an Italian family who owned it. As it is an old property it will never be as immaculate or convenient as a hotel or modern villa, but it is a family home away from home and a unique Italian experience.

The front of the house, with kitchen and living area, is in the original part of the property under the cones, as is one of the bedrooms. The other bedrooms and bathrooms at the back are in a more modern extension, but this still has dry stone walls and traditional features.

Trulli stay cooler in Summer because of the thick walls and small windows, and are warmer in Winter. However, they can get a bit damp in Winter (winters in the hills of Puglia can get very cold) and central heating and fires are needed.

At the front of the house is space to park cars. One side is mostly shaded by pine trees. The other has a large sunny terraced area with a private 10 x 5m Infinity swimming pool leading off, surrounded by smaller shrubs and fruit trees.

By the main door there is a large area for sitting and dining which has a planted area and is shaded. Down near the fence is a grapevine and mulberry bush.

At the back of the house stretches the olive grove, down to a second gate and drive. Also here is the pizza oven. There is always lots of wood on the property you can collect, if you want to use this as a barbecue or to try your hand at home made pizza. The large paved area jutting out at the back is another cisterna which collects rain water for use on the garden. This area is a real sun trap for a quiet place to sit enjoying the olive trees. Next to this is a variety of fruit trees, including apples, cherries and figs.

The main bedroom at the front of the house has a double bed and space for hanging clothes.

The twin room at the back of the house has twin beds and a small set of drawers.

The small bedroom has a bed that pulls out to be a double bed, or can be pushed away to make a single bed and save space. There is a small chest of drawers and some shelves here.

The sofa in the lounge also folds out to a double sofa bed if more sleeping space is needed. There is a travel cot in the main bedroom.

The trullo is equipped for a family holiday and is ideal if you are holidaying with children of all ages. There is a travel cot for babies and an extensible single/double bed for toddlers, plus a twin room for older children. There is also a fully equipped kitchen, including microwave and children’s crockery and cutlery. There is a selection of DVDs and indoor toys for younger children you can borrow, plus a range of outdoor and beach toys. The property is secure from the road so children can play in the garden. Children will, of course, need continuous supervision near the pool which is open to the property.

Memorable family getaway
We spent a terrific five nights at Trullo Pietro. Aaron's communication was first rate, from how everything worked to information about the local area, and dining and entertainment recommendations. On site, there was nothing too much trouble for Cheryl and her family to assist with. The Trullo was deceptively spacious (even more so than the photos suggest), quiet and secluded and yet only ten minutes from Martina Franca. It has provided lifelong memories for us and our two children and if we ever find ourselves in Puglia again, we will be sure to stay there.

Lovely trulli in rural location
Perfectly clean and simple trulli. Great communication with owner and manager. Location was perfect for exploring beautiful local towns and both Ionian and Adriatic coasts not far away. It was very very hot during our stay so swimming pool was amazing.

Trullo an Adventure.
The Trullo was delightful and was everything we expected. It provided an excellent base for exploring the many wonderful sites and sounds of this fabulous part of Italy. The property came into its own as the temperature increased and we made full use of the excellent pool. Our first experience of rural Italian living did not disappoint. Thanks to our hosts Luci, Guiseppe and Anna.

Sehr sauber alles. Schlüsselübergabe hat super geklappt. Würden immer wieder kommen.

Family friendly stay
We had a fantastic time at Trullo Pietro. We stayed with our 3 year old and 10 month old. The accommodation was perfect as the rooms were well expect for us and the kids, there were all the family touches that made our stay easy such as child seat, baby cot, bath and plenty of toys for both the inside and outside. Our 3 year old particularly enjoyed patrolling the driveway on the scooter and being in and out the pool all day. The pool itself was lovely but as we knew, you must keep an eye on the little ones when outside or when the door is open as there’s nothing stopping them accessing the pool. The grounds are beautiful and vast if you take the time to walk around the perimeter. The location of the trullo is easy to find with google maps and within easy striking distance of Martina Franca, Alberobello, Ostuni and Locorotondo. Expect peaceful lazy days by the pool and beautiful evening strolls in the local towns. Beach days are within easy reach if you choose which we didn’t haven’t already spent 8 days on the coast before arriving here as part of our overall Puglia adventure.

A perfect setting for relaxing and exploring
We loved this property, full of character, comfortable and cosy. The only thing that would have improved it for us would have been a full sized bath (we are a very tall family though). Puglia is beautiful with many beautiful places to visit, we loved Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Alberobello & especially Matera. Anna was incredibly welcoming & helpful & there is loads of useful information about the area in the house. Would definitely recommend this property

Ideal place to discover the Puglia region
Thank you Cheryl for the warm welcome and the nice week we spent at Trullo Pietro. The Trullo is amazingly comfortable seen its authenticity. The biggest challenge is to choose between staying at the Trullo and enjoy the pool or go the all the fantastic places around because the Trullo Pietro is also ideally located to visit cities around: no t only Martina Franca is just close by, a lot of interesting cities are within 1 hour drive (Matera, Ostuni, Alberobello, Loccorotondo, ...). We even went to Lecce that is just a bit more than 90 minutes away. Hope the next visitors will enjoy as much as we did.... F.

Trullo Pietro - home for two glorious weeks
We spent a delightful two weeks in Trullo Pietro - a haven of peace and tranquility. Trullo Pietro offers a cool respite from the heat outdoors during the day, and yet is warm and welcoming in the evenings. It was clean and well looked after. We had everything we needed and the owner was most helpful. The manager, a delightful English speaking lady, came to greet us on our first morning and could not have been more welcoming, offering advice and suggestions of local eateries etc. I would recommend this property to a friend unreservedly. Trullo Pietro is clearly loved and the tranquility of the area is notable; birdsong and the odd car or tractor would occasionally break the quietude. The washing machine and WiFi were most welcome but otherwise we enjoyed the simple life. The men did the washing up! We interspersed busy sight seeing days with glorious rest days and were always happy to return "home" in time for sundowners by the pool. A flock of swifts sat on an overhead wire near the pool and delight us by swooping down to either drink or collect insects which had settled on the surface - we could not work out which. The infinity pool was modern and clean and the water was not over-chlorinated which was most welcome. We visited local towns and Martina Franca itself is a delight. We went in the cool of the early evening, wandering through the antiquated streets of the old town and absorbing the atmosphere. We also braved market day and bought kilos of fresh fruit and vegetables which were incredibly good value. This area is truly Italian - not much English is spoken. The food in the restaurants is authentic and local. A car is essential to get around. There is no corner shop. Even the supermarkets shut at 1.00 pm and do not reopen until 4.00 pm. Cheryl, the Manager, had left a welcome pack of basics to get us started on our first day and also brought us fresh oranges and lemons from her trees. Our activities included driving to the 'white cities' of Ostuni, Cisternino, Alberobello, Locorotondo, exploring the fascinating ancient ruins of Egnazia and the caves of Matera, which were inhabited until the 1960's. We enjoyed an authentic Italian meal in Ceglie, eating in a charming family restaurant - Capitulo. There was no menu, the chef came and talked to us. We visited both coastlines and swam in the Ionian Sea. We walked in the nearby Bosco delle Pianelle. We would love to return.

Trullo Pietro - in the heart of the Puglia countryside.
Trullo Pietro is very clean, tidy and authentic trullo with excellent amenities ,especially the swimming pool and plenty of outdoor space if you have children. It was beautifully cool inside and warm outside 30+. Cheryl, the manager, looked after us superbly. She was willing to come over asap if necessary. She has a fund of local knowledge especially the restaurants, that tourists would never find or know about but are the authentic Italian family eating places. It is 15 minutes out of beautiful historic Martina Franca in the heart of wheat, olive growing, trulli farming country,so a car with GPS is absolutely necessary for shopping, sight seeing etc. It is also equi-distant from both coasts and all the medieval/baroque towns and sights: Ostuni, Alberbello, Locorotondo, Cisternino, Crispiano, Egnazia(Roman town and museum), and Chieglie. Matera is further away but well worth the journey to see this unique UNESCO site. We also discovered the National park,Bosco della Piannelle (about 5km) which is good for walking and cycling. There are also plenty of little roads to wander around in the area where you can see more trulli and local farms. Our favourite coast was the Ionian sea near Lido Piri Piri Restaurant with its private and free(libero) beaches. We spent 2 glorious weeks at Trullo Pietro with plenty to do and, see and a wonderful home and pool to relax in on our rest days! I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a different, undiscovered, and really interesting part of Italy.

About the host

Host profile image
I live in South East London and have two young children who have grown up holidaying in Trullo Pietro and love Puglia.

Why they chose this property

I fell in love with Puglia when I first visited in 2011 with my young child. It is a visually stunning, warm, relaxed and family friendly part of Italy that is steeped in history and culture. Driving through the Itria valley and exploring its historic towns I knew I would love to own a trullo one day and return. When the opportunity arose I jumped at it and was lucky enough to find Trullo Pietro. From relaxing around the pool, spending the day at the beach, riding horses through the valley, taking a passegiata around a centro storico, eating gelato in a busy piazza, or dining al fresco on fresh local cuisine, we have never had a dull day in Puglia and return every year.

What makes this property unique

Traditional trullo with 5 cones and quirky original features - a unique Puglian experience
Infinity pool with sunny terrace to keep the whole family entertained
Outside pizza oven and acres of private mature land
10 minute drive from the Baroque town of Martina Franca with its many excellent restaurants and beautiful centro storico
Close to all the major towns of the Itria Valley including Alberobello, Cisternino and Ostuni
Close to some beautiful sandy beaches, a big cave complex, an equestrian centre, a water park and zoo and other attractions
