About this property

Luxury Chateau with pool + private gardens in historic South France village

Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees, lies the charming medieval bastide of Chalabre, one of the oldest villages in France, and one of the few growing villages in Occitanie. It has been beautifully rejuvenated, thanks to the care of the local council and their community pride.

Owned now by two Australians and a previous residence of nobility, the unique, luxuriously renovated Château Terre Blanche, Chalabre, known also as Chateau Chemin Vert, is open year-round for private or business rental, retreats and weddings.

The Château has four well-appointed oversized bedrooms in addition to a 2 bedroom suite, suitable in total for up to 16 people, all with lavish en-suite bathrooms, finished to the highest modern European standards. Living areas comprise the library, the Blue Salon, the Grand Salon with a Baroque hand-carved wooden fireplace, a gymnasium, and a dining room/Orangerie with a flowing south-facing outdoor terrace, perfect for alfresco dining in the summer.

Exclusively secured by high stone walls and set in 2700m² of manicured lawn, parterre gardens with potential for fresh seasonal produce, an International Pétanque Court and a pristine 12 x 6m pool, this rental Château has all the privacy and lushness of a country estate, but the proximity allows guests to embrace French village life.

The Château also offers an impressive array of optional personalised services including au pair, chef and tour guides.

In the early 20th century, the French Count Joseph-Gabriel Breitbach purchased the plot of land to build a “Maison de Maitre”, along with a factory, like the one he owned in Argentina, which he hoped, would boost the local economy. The construction of the Château started in late 1911, but being interrupted by the first world war, it wasn't completed until 1918. The Chateau was then sold in 1934 and was eventually purchased by an Australian couple in 2014 . It is now known by locals as "Chateau d’Australie."

For the last 10 years, the owners have enjoyed the Chateau with their family and friends and are delighted to share it with guests when they are away. They love the village life, bike riding, horse riding and hiking in the Pyrenees. In the summer there are many markets and festivals and in the winter, there is skiing just 45 minutes away.
