About this property

Spoil yourself at Strupak Cottage

Nestled between hills and Nelson city centre, this historic cottage is located in the safe, friendly residential neighbourhood of The Wood. Only ten minutes walk to Nelson city centre, the cottage is a private, peaceful and cosy home away from home. Offering the styling and quality furnishings of a boutique bandb at a fraction of the cost, this self contained cottage is ideal for couples looking for a romantic get-away or central base for exploring the Nelson region.

Retaining the original facade from 1866, the cottage has been renovated to provide a welcoming environment including a heat pump. The bedroom has a comfortable queen size bed with luxurious linens and electric blankets. The living room has a Smart TV, Freeview, free WiFi, DVD and stereo/iPod dock plus a collection of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs. The well equipped kitchen includes pantry basics plus a selection of locally produced goodies including Sublime plunger coffee, Pic's Peanut Butter, Tasman Ridge Olive Oil, dukkah, gourmet mustard, and home made jam and chutney. A sunroom with dining table and sofa overlooks the hills and lush private sunny garden.

The cottage is perfectly situated to explore Nelson’s rich array of boutique shops, cafes, bars and restaurants a pleasant ten minute walk away. This is a great base from which to explore the wider region – Mapua, Kaiteri and the Abel Tasman National Park - taking in wineries, galleries, beaches and beautiful countryside.

Closer to home is a dairy, post office, Bobby Franks Cafe and the Sprig and Fern tavern (a tiny pub with old-fashioned hospitality, open fires, boutique beers and board games). Take a walk along the beautiful Maitai River, stroll through the Queen's Gardens and Chinese Gardens, visit the Suter Art Gallery or Founders Historic Park and climb to the Centre of New Zealand for magnificent views over Nelson city.

The name Strupak Cottage (stroo-pack), is the Gaelic word for "tea, scones and conversation" offered to travellers.

History, location and to boot dog friendly!

Couldn't have got a better spot in Nelson. Being dog friendly was great. The cottage was well equipped, comfortable and felt very welcoming. I had a problem with my dog who required emergency veterinary care and was able to stay on an extra night as no immediate incoming guests. A very understanding and empathetic host.

Sweet heritage cottage, quite roomy & bright

We quite we enjoyed staying at the cottage. Pre-check-in correspondence was clear and prompt. The host invited us to check-in early on the day we were arriving, as the place was available, which was handy for us, and very generous. Nelson is a wonderful place, with lots of highlights. We liked the Prince Albert and the Sprig & Fern for dinner, and the hikes above the cottage for good scenic walks. The WOW is incredible, if that kind of art speaks to you. The cottage was clean, homey, and inviting. The cottage is on a residential street, but the bedroom is on the street side of the cottage, and the street is a bit busy, especially during the day. The neighbourhood is quiet, the neighbours were nice, easy parking outside. Having the nice backyard, and the lovely bright garden room out back was a highlight. Easy to walk to town for the central sights, and easy to drive to the sights that were further away. Thanks again to Roz.

Great location for exploring Nelson

Cute and clean little house in a nice neighborhood. We could walk into town for dinner, and there were nice coffee/breakfast spots just a few blocks away. Roz was great to work with on the reservation, and had lots of helpful information about things to do in the area.

My husband and I loved our stay at Strupak Cottage.

My husband and I loved our stay at Strupak Cottage. We had a pretty full schedule while we were in Nelson and it was really nice to feel like we had a proper home to go to. The cottage had everything we needed for our stay, the umbrella we found was particularly useful for the days we were there :-) Bed was comfy and the place was cosy. Even though it was too wet to go out to the garden, we enjoyed having our breakfast in the little conservatory. Very convenient location for walking to town.

Very handy to walk into Nelson town centre and leave the car behind.

Very handy to walk into Nelson town centre and leave the car behind. The cottage was very cute and had a lot of history behind it. Very quiet area, especially in the evenings when you could hear a pin drop. Everything you could possibly need was in the cottage. We enjoyed eating our lunch in the sunny back garden as well.

Comfortable cottage and well equipped especially the pantry in the kitchen. Very close to all amenities especially the lovely parks at the end of the road. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and had a most enjoyable time at your recommended local pub the Sprig and Fern. You are right the fish and chips were delicious and we also were treated to the Morris Dancers on Thursday night and a display of vintage cars on Friday night.

About the host

Hosted by Roz Speirs

Host profile image
I have been welcoming guests to my holiday homes since 2004. I take great pride in renovating, decorating and maintaining each property to a high standard to ensure that they provide a comfortable home away from home for guests.

I emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland in 2002 attracted by Nelson’s wonderful climate and lifestyle. I met my husband here who was born and raised in Nelson and returned home after working in North Island and the UK. In addition to running the holiday homes, I am a glass artist (www.clarityglass.co.nz) and my husband owns a fishing and diving store. We live close to all the holiday homes so are on hand to sort out any little problems that might arise.

Having rented many baches and holiday homes over the years I know what’s important to guests: cleanliness, a relaxing outdoor space, comfortable beds and top quality linen for a great night’s sleep, and provision of the “little things” like pantry basics, kitchen roll, first aid kits and sharp kitchen knives!

Why they chose this property

The Wood area is a residential area tucked between the hills and Nelson City Centre. It is an easy flat walk to town, about 10 - 15 minutes. However there are lots of local amenities too including the tiny Sprig and Fern Pub, Bobby Franks Cafe, Milton St Takeaway and a post office/dairy. There are great walks on the doorstep - up the centre of NZ for great views over the city, or more leisurely walks along the Maitai River.

What makes this property unique

Strupak Cottage has a lovely sunny garden with views of the hills, a lovely place for a morning coffee or to read a book.
