About this property

Montrose, Historical Family Beach House. Pet Friendly.

Montrose Home and Garden is a large private holiday home with loads of outdoor lawn and growing areas. The tennis court is a delight for all ages with a great surface for children on wheels (adults can watch from the deck) or bigger kids tennis tournaments.
The house sits between both Warrington Beach (white sand and generally safe swimming) and Blueskin Bay, a gorgeous tidal inlet with cockles and small crabs that live under rocks.

The bottom gate opens onto the domain where there is a lovely children's park. In summer and some holidays a domain shop offers ice blocks, coffee and surf school with wetsuits for hire.

One minute walk out the gate is the beach...2 minutes walk to the right is Blueskin Bay. The house has direct views over both the beach and the bay. Its the perfect setting for you to unwind, relax, explore and enjoy your escape.

The house was built in 1927, it was sensitively remodelled and extended in the late 1970's. Kauri timber used in its interior, was salvaged and floated over from the decommissioned military barracks once located at Taiaroa Head, dating from 1880.

The main lounge opens onto a completely enclosed deck with a north facing sunny aspect and immediate views of the tenniscourt. The lounge sports a big fireplace/ wetback and also a newly installed heatpump. There is a tv with freeview and a dvd library (some kids) and has an hdmi chord to connect a laptop. A small private conservatory adjoins the lounge and deck. Great for running operations or a semi private work spot privacy enabled with a curtain divide.

Through the door is the spacious open plan kitchen and dining area. It is appointed with a servery and a pantry that has necessary basics. The area has a lovely, well lit relaxed feel with large windows giving private garden views.

With just a 1 minute walk to the beach and a 15 minute drive to Dunedin City its great for groups wishing to attend events at the Forsyth Barr Stadium or visiting the City. The Orokanui Eco sanctuary is close for day activities (approximately 10km). This beautiful established sanctuary is now home to many native species including lizards, flora, Kiwi, Kaka, Takahe etc and has many walks and activities.
The house is spacious, private and peaceful, has a wonderful historical character with many time period furnishings and curios. The house has large areas and varied spaces for the whole family to relax and enjoy. Warrington is a relatively small community with friendly people and a quaint special appeal.
The house is ready for you to just walk in and start your vacation. It is clean and equipped with wood for colder nights. Beds and bedding are excellent quality, made up with fresh linen and have electric blankets.

Bathroom facilities include a beautifully restored main bathroom with a toilet, bath and separate tiled shower. A lit mirror , heater and electrical outlets for shaving/hairdrier etc. There is an additional wc with a toilet/ lit mirror and hand basin at the other end of the hall.

If you are unstable on your feet at night we advise you to sleep on the ground floor to avoid stairs.

The bathrooms are equipped with basic amenities like toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, towels etc

Throughout the house are period furnishings and lighting. It has been in our family for many years and many objects tell a tale. The is an extensive book library covering subjects such as gardening, poetry, war, politics, art and also a section for children.

An honour
It's a charming property. At first looks like it would be cold but it warms up remarkaly quickly. Open fire sets a lovely ambience and the heat pump/room heaters take care of the rest. The beach is pretty much out the back gate. Its fun to imagine the home this property used to be and the family/guests who stayed here. The garden is over grown but that adds to the character. Kids woukd love exploring this oroperty!

Character Comforts
We’ve stayed in a few places and traveled the World, but this place was something unique and special. It’s very old circa 1920’s and like a museum in many ways. A big old house, with creaky floorboards but also warm and homely. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch in the afternoon sunshine with a cup of tea listening to the sea. If you can appreciate history then book this place. If you want something modern, then this isn’t for you. We had a very relaxing long weekend and would definitely go back!

Spacious character filled cottage.
Spacious, comfortable cottage which had everything we needed for our 2 week stay. In need of some tlc. Extensive grounds but unfenced so a little tricky with a dog. Good communication with our hosts and overall an enjoyable stay.

A charming place
An almost 100 year old cottage with great charm. A bit shabby yet clean, is full of vintage pieces including a lovely old piano that still can crank out the tunes! Updated utilities and a well equipped kitchen, but could use some decent utility knives :o) The property itself is a bit rundown but is still lovely and is in a great location. Private and very close to the huge beach. Enjoyed our stay.

A magical place
The house is old and a little shabby, but it has great charm. It's position just up from the beach is ideal and the area is so peaceful and relaxing. The beach is beautiful and seeing sealions and seals was just the icing on the cake.

Wonderful house but lacks maintenance
We absolutely loved our holiday at Montrose house in Warrington. The house has a wonderful vibe and is like a museum with so many interesting old family things to look at. Very clean and warm. Unfortunately however the tennis court and gardens have not been maintained. There are weeds over the tennis court and what was a beautiful garden is now over grown. The exterior of the house needs painted. The cost of renting this property is high and guests expect that basic maintained be done.

It all was pretty good. Close to a nice beach, playground. The tennis court was a huge bonus.
Next holiday place has to have all the same features, like a roomy house and all the things provided, bedding, utensils, basic food etc.. Otherwise we have to come back to your place!!!

Great location and beach. Great section for kids
Old spacious holiday bach with lots to look at. Large garden with tennis court. Kids loved playing on the bikes. Comfortable beds in general. Well equipped kitchen. Only downside was missing curtains in many rooms and bed in front room sagged in middle a bit so too roll together for our liking. Great for a large family although pricing policy. makes this quite expensive.

Relaxing in an historic setting
An old historic home but with modern amenities - heat pump, dish washer, microwave and gas hot water that doesn’t run out. Kitchen - HEAPS of pots, pans, plates, cups, cutlery, tea towels, paper towels etc ALL that you need. Our group of 4 thoroughly enjoyed our stay and although the weather was inclement, we were cosy warm. We hope to return sometime in the future.

Quirky getaway
The kids loved this place especially having the tennis court & bikes to play with & the playground at the back of the house & the beach so close. The property was like walking into my grandparents old farm house with lots of old trinkets to look at and an old vibe but very comfortable once we settled. It was very clean & a beautiful view from the top bedroom. Communication from the host was delayed due to website technicalities but we got there in the end with no problems. A quirky fun place to stay.

Great family holiday location
For a family holiday this location was great. The strength of this location is it's direct access to the playground and beach through the back gate. It also has a tennis court and a piano. For Grandparents and two families with toddlers this created a great environment with many play choices and outdoor activities which we all enjoyed. The beds were comfortable as well. As a dog family we appreciated that the dogs could stay and they enjoyed it too. The section is large and rambling and the house has great character. We did feel that the section and the house were a bit run down and could do with a tidy up and for toddlers sleeping could do with some curtains that blocked out more light. That saying we loved our stay were able to have a great family time together in this most beautiful part of the world.
