About this property

A large home that is a beautiful piece of New Zealand history

A large character house on a large section. This house was originally built in 1886 and is one of the oldest in the village. The house has been host to the local Doctor, rural postie and numerous farming families of the region. Over the past 18 years we have modernised the house while retaining the character and feel that came with the era it was built in. It is large, with big bedrooms, warm and has all the creature comforts you will need.

The house is short walk to the beach, pub or golf course. The beach is 10 kms of golden sand, with great fishing, diving and some areas of safe swimming. This location offers a great place to unwind and take in the stunning Wairarapa coast. It also has a fantastic 9nhole golf course and local pub with a great restaurant. The coast has a great reputation for longline fishing, and we speak from experience when we say that the gurnard and kahawai along this coast are some of the biggest you will catch!

Close to the area is Akitio, with the possibility of a drive over Akitio station through stunning scenery if you gain permission. You might also fancy a short drive to Porangahau or maybe the easy drive to either Dannevirke or Waipukurau to check out the local eateries!

A large and noisy seal colony hauls out at the famous Cape Turnagain during winter. From here you can see where they used to barge supplies to shore and take wool to waiting freighters. When the sea conditions are right you can also get a feed of fat paua, or if keen take your tanks and find crays only a short distance off shore.

The house is warm with a large wood burner and stacks of firewood so offers a comfortable stay regardless of the weather. There are plenty of DVD's, games and books. It is a great house to relax, unwind and enjoy the rural surroundings. All the bedrooms are large and warm. The bathroom and kitchen have recently undergone renovations and are clean and modern.

Large fenced section with a native forest at the back is great for young children.

There is plenty of off street parking for extra cars or the boat.
Special conditions:
The house has undergone extensive refurbishment but we still have work to do! The interior is largely complete but if unpainted gib or uncarpeted floors offend, then this house is not for you!
Smoking is only permitted outside and guest must clean up any butts.
Max 4 adults.
There are two fridge/freezers in the house for larger groups or extended stays.
We prefer family groups or couples where possible.

NOTE: The house is serviced by a local who will turn the water and hot water on and off and clean the house after you leave, but please ensure you do the dishes before you leave and take your rubbish/recycling with you. You will also need to bring your own linen (towels/sheets/pillow slips/tea towels).

Beautiful home to stay in over the long-weekend. Lain made everything super simple, inviting and the instructions were easy to follow. Child friendly with plenty of toys to entertain them. Herbertville beach just down the road too.

Great place to stay for a relaxing few days
The property is very charismatic with plenty of space and well equipped kitchen, ideally located in the small village. Beach is a short drive away if you have fishing gear or a 10min walk. Would defiantly recommend if you are looking for a peaceful few days of relaxing.

Beautiful days at a beautiful Place
We had three lovely days in Herbertville. The house and its location were amazing. We enjoyed having the beach to ourselves and coming back to a roomy beautiful house in the evening. The kids loved the Dune and Fossils at the other end of the beach.

Perfect base for a relaxing, quiet beach holiday
Huge house with a fascinating history and vintage decor. Loved the 'secret' garden out the back. The picnic table up the top is a perfect place to enjoy meals or just hang out as it's sheltered from the prevailing wind and has great views. Really comfy bed and couches.

It was like the good old days !
We really enjoy staying in your Historic House, that had everything we needed, Loved the old telephone that was quite novel along with many other items in the house that goes with the house Era. It was better than expected and the bed super comfortable! Loved the park you created behind the house too. It was good to get away from it all and many thanks..

Peace and solitude!
We arrived to a fantastic property in a cute seaside community. The road is a bit of a work in progress from Weber due to the Cyclone. A great property with plenty of room for a family. Enjoyed the garden and surrounding spaces. A coffee cart and real fruit ice cream across the road (Jax and Steve make great coffee). Walked to the cape for the seals and dotterills. Surfcasted off the beach which is a quick 5 minute drive. I would definitely stay again.

Nice for summer but too cold for winter.
A lovely renovated old house somewhat spoiled by the cold and too little firewood. Tenants need access to far more firewood to stay warm. The sun shines beautifully in the front door in the morning BUT mostly on the water tanks and the rear wall and toilet where there are no windows.

Herbertville stay
We stayed at Neil's holiday home for a few days over the January holidays. The house has pretty much everything you need and the place is spacious and comfortable. I loved the verandah for reading books and the backyard was lovely for coffee in the morning. Herbertville itself doesn't have a petrol station or shops, so be prepared and bring everything you need. The beach is beautiful but didn't feel safe swimming there with kids, so just admired it from afar. Would recommend the walk to Cape Turnagain - really neat sandunes and lots of seals to check out. The people across the road are really friendly and sell ice creams and coffee. We all concurred it was the best real fruit ice cream we've had in a long long time. Thanks for the stay.

Cute large historic house
Really suitable for the large family lunch and dinner that occurred because of ANZAC weekend special event nearby and a good couple of nights for the 4 adults and one 8 year old that stayed. House was warmer than expected; the fire heated the house well and the crowning glory was the fabulous view from the new garden high up at rear of section.

Herbertville Stay
We organised the stay last minute and Iain was very helpful and sent through detailed instructions on everything we needed to know. The house is very large and comfortable with everything one could need. We had fun playing all the old games and watching some of the many movies at night. The beach is beautiful and the walk to the Cape well worth exploring. We would love to return sometime.

Iain and Dawn are your hosts and we are Napier based having been in the region since 1998. We are both busy professionals and love escaping to the beach whenever work and time allows. Our best days at the beach are when we can get the kontiki out and dive for a feed of paua.

Why they chose this property

Where the hell is Herbertville? We wanted a unique property off the beaten track, but with good access to the beach life. Neverending ticks all the boxes.
We chose the name Neverending to reflect the neverending hours we have put into restoring the 136 year old house. It has been a labour of love, carefully protecting the character and uniqueness of the building. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

What makes this property unique

A big house with lots of space for family and friends. Handy to the golf course, pub and camp ground.
