About this property

The Hermitage, Historic heritage listed building

Escape the modern world and stay at the most unique accommodation in the Midwest.

No television, no WIFI, just the most romantic cottage experience ever.

The Hermitage was designed by Monsignor Hawes, architect of many heritage buildings including St Francis Xavier Cathedral.

It is a small brick and tile residential building with design elements of the Inter-War Old English architectural style and with internal features such as cut out hearts, reflecting the Arts & Crafts Movement influence.

This little cottage is historical & by modern standards, very basic. That is part of its charm. People stay there as an experience & as a retreat.

The hosts live nearby and are available for any queries or assistance anytime.

Although situated close to the CBD The Hermitage sits alone on an acre of fenced land. The only neighbours are the very quiet tenants of a retirement home.

The Hermitage is the perfect combination of spiritual retreat with access to beaches, restaurants and everything Geraldton has to offer.

NB: The Hermitage is a rustic heritage listed property & of significant historical value in the Mid West. It has not been renovated inside to look modern &, apart from the addition of a shower, it has changed very little since Monsignor Hawes built it. Items like air-conditioning & a full kitchen are not available. There is a portable water cooler & other normal fans, heaters plus a basic kitchen with an air fryer, microwave & fridge, but no stove.

Fairy Tale Weekend
The house was fantastic and we enjoyed our stay. However, the Devil is in the detail and there were a few details that were unacceptable. The vehicle entry gate did not work properly. The gate would swing forward because the sliding ground bolts on the gates had no secure holes to rest in. Our dogs could escape under the gate gap and also under a section of the fence. The flyer said open the windows for a nice breeze but not all the window latches worked. Instead of fixing the window latches some home made signs saying don't open the windows were used. Opening the bedroom door allowed a lovely breeze in but instead of fixing a nice security door at the back with a screen so that at night the door could be left open for a lovely breeze there was this awful out of place air cooler plonked right in the way of the back door. The breeze meant there was no need for air conditioning so long as the bedroom door and living room windows were fitted with screens and all the living room windows had their fittings repaired so they could be opened

A privilege to stay in this iconic cottage
Pristinely maintained little cottage. A pleasure to learn about the builder, John Hawes, from the historical books - strategically provided on the premises. If you want to experience something unique in accommodation, this is a must!

Lovely little cottage
We loved our stay at this beautifully constructed cottage. So much history associated with this building. Make sure you park inside the gate as interesting characters walk past from time to time. Otherwise a very enjoyable stay.
