About this property
A Modern Home on Top of the Beaver Valley with Direct Access to the Bruce Trail.
Summary:
Find sanctuary in our beautiful modern home, tucked into a swath of conservation land that hugs the edge of the escarpment just north of Lake Eugenia. Hop on the Bruce Trail directly from the front of our property, where you can hike along a Zen-like path to a valley lookout, through an old growth forest, and alongside rocky crevasses, following a delightful loop that brings you across a meadow to our back door. If you are feeling more ambitious, hook onto one of the longer branches that will take you down to Hogg's Falls or across to Old Baldy. Once you are back home, enjoy the feeling of being outdoors as you cook up dinner, have a fireside read, or relax in the wood fired sauna before tucking in for a restful night's sleep.
The Space
We designed and built GlasHaus as a place to escape to from the bustle of our careers, though it has since become our permanent winter home. The space can comfortably accomodate two couples or a small family. It includes a modern kitchen with induction cooktop and convection range, an incredible living space that places you in the midst of the outdoors, and a cozy master suite - with a Queen size bed that shares the gorgeous view of grass and forest. Walk down the floating staircase to the lower level and you'll find a comfortable recreation room, second bedroom and bath, along with a convenient home office space complete with desk and ethernet connection for remote work or just surfing the web. Plus, there are full laundry facilities. Note that 2025 is the first year we are renting GlasHaus.

About the host
Hosted by Robert Shepherd

We're from a small town in Ontario where we raised our children and worked as health professionals. Once the children had all headed off to university and beyond, we purchased a lot on top of the Beaver Valley where we built a winter home that we could escape to in the winters.
Why they chose this property
We liked how the GlasHaus property was snuggled into a large parcel of conservation land right on the edge of the Beaver Valley. It offered us an opportunity to design and build something unique that could take advantage of a setting that was overflowing with beauty. We also liked that it was adjacent to the Bruce Trail, and that it was within a short drive to the Beaver River, not to mention countless bike trails, cross country ski trails and downhill clubs and resorts.
What makes this property unique
GlasHaus was designed to be a compact and comfortable space with a modern look and feel. It was built to take advantage of a beautiful sloping southwest orientation that provides views across a small meadow to the nearby old growth forest. As the name suggests, close to half of the wall space is glass, providing occupants with the feeling that they are nestled in the changing scenes outside. Inside, a STUV fireplace and radiant heat from the concrete floors keeps things cozy in winter, and a heat pump provides air conditioning in the warmer seasons. Most of the accents and trim were crafted by me from rift sawn white oak, including the floating staircase that takes you from the open concept first floor to a cozy lower level. Though it was meant to be a bit of an experiment, we have enjoyed GlasHaus so much that it has become our permanent winter home.
