About this property

Stunning High Desert View in Secluded Mountain Setting

If the sweeping scenery, luscious silence, and the high Sonoran desert of Southern Arizona is your passion, then you have found the perfect "snowbird" home away from home. With a 180 degree sweep of rolling high-desert foothills that lead up to the 9,000 foot peak, Mt. Wrightson, you will be amazed that there are no houses to mar you view.

Enjoy dinner and a sunset on the expansive "Sunset Magazine" inspired flagstone patio that becomes one of the best "rooms" in the house. Afterwards, as the stars slowly fill the night sky, luxuriate in an intimate hot tub with the same stunning views.

If you enjoy stargazing, there is virtually no light pollution as the stars light up the night sky. If you enjoy birding, you are in one of the premier areas in Southern Arizona to pursue your hobby. You are only 30 minutes from Patagonia with it's world-renowned bird sanctuary! You can also hike right from your back door to a series of trails that follow Sonoita creek and wind throughout the foothills.

If art is your thing, you are twenty minutes from the famous artist colony, Tubac, formerly a Spanish presidio from the 1600's. If history is your bent, you have Tombstone, Bisbee, Tucson, and all the western and Spanish history, all within an hours drive.

If you enjoy birding, you already know that Southern Arizona is a birder's paradise. Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die: Birding Experts Share the World’s Greatest Destinations. Patagonia – which lies 60 miles south of Tucson – garnered its ranking as a world-class birding destination and the heart of Arizona birding for a number of reasons: from the variety of bird species seen here (including a number of rare species) to the accessibility of prime birdwatching sites to the area’s geological and ecological diversity and beauty. Patagonia is only 40 minutes from the house!

You can hike and bike right out the door from our place. Below the house is Sonoita creek with an extensive hiking trail system. There are also numerous bike trails throughout the area.

Our place is your home away from home. We have been VRBO renters for many years and know exactly what we want from an outstanding VRBO experience. That's why we do are best to provide you with everything you may need at the house so that you never feel you are wanting for anything. As you can read, our reviews attest to this fact.

We look forward to having you as guests in our home to enjoy the privacy and the views that so many have enjoyed before you.

This vrbo sets a bar that is the highest we have ever stayed in. There is absolutely nothing that the host has not thought about. Everything anyone needs to cook is there in a spotless kitchen. The bathrooms are spotless and we loved the lit/heated toilets. Carew leaves more toilet paper than the one/two rolls most VRBO's leave. The bedrooms are tastefully decorated, with soft sheets, beds that invite sleep, plenty of closet space and guest bathrobes and slippers. The hot tub was delightful and the view sitting in it was 180 degrees of valley, hills and mountains. You can see Lake Patagonia which is 2 1/2 miles away and cows that roam in open spaces. Gorgeous view from the hot tub and patio outdoors. We saw one truck in this view the entire time we were there and let me sayt, 15 days was long enough. The location, which seems remote becasue you don't see houses from the back or front, is really just rural. You are "far from the maddening crowd" unless you choose to drive either 15 minutes (not much there) or into Tubac or Green Valley. Wonderful place to get away from it all. For entertainment, Carew has books with vast titles...fiction, non-fiction, art, the west, and many other themes in the office which my husband used. Computer all set to go, printer if you needed it....Also, in the family room, DVD's which we watched while sitting on comfortable furniture. Cannot oraise this hiome enough and I am running out of words in the space allowed. Just go...you will love it!

An Amazing property and incredible Host!!!
The home is amazing and the views literally go on for miles and miles. It is a beautiful secluded home with views of a valley and mountains that we were fortunate enough to see snow capped! The snow was only there a couple of days, but a rare view in Arizona, so very special. The hot tub is located in a spectacular location that is isolate and again offers amazing review. Carew, the host, was AMAZING. Had a slight health issue and he was able to arrange a visit we could have never gotten ourselves in such short time. He was incredibly attentive and ensured our stay was outstanding, which it most definitely was. It you are looking for city life and party town, this won't be your place, but if like us you want remote quiet and indescribable views, this is the place!! My job is high stress and I could feel the tension just melting away with the solitude and just the sounds of birds and some local grazing cows. We cannot say enough great things about the home and Carew and are already planning our next visit. It is remote, yet you can easily be up in Green Valley in less than 45 minutes. Tubac is an artsy little shopping gem as well. The home is very spacious - actually larger than we thought from the pictures and the weather was spectacular. We came from Spokane and cold as heck, and had to laugh that we got snow there our first day, but again it was beautiful on the mountains and soon melted and warmed up to low 70s' - Just fantastic. Thank you Carew. We will be back!!

So Perfect
We were looking for big views and a quiet setting to spend some time away from the Seattle rain and to celebrate our 40 year wedding anniversary. We hit the jackpot! Even the cooler than expected weather did not dampen our love of our time here. The views? BIG! In all directions. The home was comfy and had everything we needed. Carew was a stellar host, even offering to cover alternative accommodations during a short power outage. We hiked below the house, locating the trail behind the white, gun shot pocked sign, then wading across the creek to find the old rail bed on the other side. We went to Patagonia 2 times to The Gathering Grounds for breakfast and those Pecan Bars. (I brought 4 home to freeze!) We explored many other hiking opportunities in the area, ate in Tubac at Wisdom's (Tuesdays is 2 for 1 Margaritas). We played cribbage and slept well in the very comfy beds. We grilled twice, great grill, and spent one hilarious night out by the fire table with friends of 40 years reminiscing and laughing until we ached. We got in the hot tub almost every sunrise and sunset. It does not get more picture perfect than that setting. It was a wonderful trip....one of the best view places we have ever rented. We arrived home road tired but heart happy. Thanks Carew, thanks so much! Liz and John King

Tranquility defined
Without repeating all of the excellent reviews, we will just confirm all of the positives that preceded our visit. Staying here is a treat for those looking for quiet and comfort. The vistas from the deck and hot tub are endless, and the dark sky stargazing is magnificent. Our host has created a home to share, and treats guests like family. Little things go a long way, like coffee and staples in place upon arrival, and something as simple as Kleenex and plenty of toilet paper means you don’t have to spend your first day trying to figure out what you will need to survive. It’s there! Thanks Carew, too bad we didn’t have a chance to get together. Maybe next time. Thanks again, Magda and Grant

Absolutely Jaw Droppingly Beautiful, Serene and Spectacular!
We have stayed in many VRBO homes around the country and this is the absolute BEST we have ever experienced! First of all, Carew was the most gracious host, always available but never intrusive. He is the kind of person you would like to sit down and have a chat with-articulate, interesting,, knowledgeable and just plain fun. In addition he has written a book (The Legacy Letters) which you can find in his library (although he never mentioned it - it was a fun find). He and his wife have created a tasteful, comfortable and arty home with all the comforts you could think to ask for. Truly, ALL the comforts. Outside there is a large and tasteful patio with unmatched and unbeatable views! For example there is an outdoor hot tub, a large ramada and comfortable wicker furniture, a fire table, top of the line outdoor Bar-B-Que and outdoor eating area with lighted umbrella. Although the starts are so radiant and abundant you may not not want to use the lighted umbrella at night. There is even a telescope and binoculars for your use. Inside you will find anything and everything you might need or want, especially in the kitchen, including more spices than I have seen outside a grocery store all arranged alphabetically. Additionally there is an indoor fireplace, jetted tub and large comfortable TV and reading room. The master bedroom has a super comfortable and bed linens and beautiful windows and coverings. The best part was the stunning views from almost every room in the home. Literally you could see for miles to the Santa Rita Mountain range. The home offers quiet solitude and a chance to see and enjoy wildlife. Although it feels remote here, it is only 15 minutes at most from services and the wifi was terrific which is not usually the case in such remote feeling places. There were two big screen TVs but I have to admit we never used them, we were too busy enjoying everything else the home offered. Hiking and birding are are within walking distance with more opportunities within a 30 minute drive. Southeast AZ is a birding hot spot and you will not be disappointed if you are a birding expert or if you are casually interested in the birds around you. The Santa Cruz river and the riparian areas along the river offer quiet hiking opportunities. Overall, this home offers a very special experience that we will not forget and we are definitely planning our next visit.

Stunning View and Beautiful House, Perfect for Hikers and Birders
Never mind 5 stars - this is a 10 star VRBO. The house is comfortable, attractive, and includes everything you need for a perfect stay in Southern Arizona. Big plusses are the private hot tub with a stunning view, a soaking tub inside, a gas fireplace in the living room that is perfect for chilly mornings or evenings, and a kitchen that is stocked with everything you need (really - everything! - there were more spices than I have at home, and they were even arranged alphabetically. Wow.) The view is spectacular, and the there is great hiking along the rail trail along Sonoita Creek, plus lots more hiking within a half hour drive. In addition, Carew is a great host - available for questions and assistance if needed, but not intrusive. Really, can't beat this place!

Visit to Southern Arizona
Property was lovely - patio and view are breathtaking. Hot tub and stars at night were fabulous. Kitchen incredibly well stocked, lots!! of spices, big refrigerator. Comfy bed and warm house. Large master bath with an epic shower!! Good Internet and TV reception. Downside for us was remoteness of property. While we loved the view and privacy/quiet, the house is on a steep ridge so hiking/biking not good options. Drive in to house from 1-17 was very steep and winding. Tubac was nearby for shopping and a couple dinners but not any great restaurants in vicinity. We enjoyed a day in Patagonia seeing the lake and taking an easy hike. Host was wonderfully helpful and attentive.

Spectacular
This was our second stay at this house in Rio Rico. There were so many things to do, the comfort of this well-equipped home and the responsiveness of the owner Carew made for a perfect vacation and a great experience each time. We have stayed at many VRBO’s and this one is outstanding in many ways. Carew recently upgraded the outside grill as well as the indoor fireplace. As mentioned several times, the spectacular view and large patio make this a special home. If you like the southwest, you would have a hard time finding a better place to stay.

Wonderful quiet location
This property is one of the best VRBO's we've stayed in. The view is spectacular, and it has a very comfortable living style. We especially liked the southwest motif, the open great room/kitchen layout and the expansive deck. We watched a beautiful thunderstorm over the mountains the evening we arrived. Carew is a great host, and we are already planning a return trip.

Amazing home with a stellar view
My family of four has stayed at multiple hotels, condos, homes and resorts, but this getaway in Rio Rico takes the cake. The view is priceless. We watched several sunrises from the back patio and enjoyed watching the hummingbirds feed on the rosemary flowers. We also hiked down to Sonoita Creek, which was flooded during our stay and impassable, but the hike was pleasant nonetheless. The home itself was super clean, and Carew (the owner) doesn’t miss a beat. Seriously, you will want for nothing. Overall it was an amazing experience, and we can’t wait to book the home again!

Beautiful house with amazing views
This house sits on a hill overlooking a beautiful valley with Lake Patagonia in the background. The house is well stocked with cooking items. The patio looks into the valley with no houses in view (very private). Carew the owner responded quickly when contacted and makes you feel right at home. If you are looking for a relaxing and private house this is it. Close enough to wine country and Tubac.

Great place to hang out
We had a great time staying at the house. Even the first time that we really didn't want to do anything than hanging around the house as the back patio with the stunning view was a perfect place to be lazy. We also enjoyed the hot tub. I highly recommend when using the tub to bring the binoculars as the tree that covers the tub for shade brings alot of birds to watch. Truly recommend this place.

I can’t say enough good things about our stay at this property. The kitchen was amply outfitted with everything a cook could desire, including a fully stocked cabinet of spices. There was fantastic office space available. The house was perfect and we lacked for nothing. The porch and stupendous views were excellent, providing a great space to spend time with family and friends. We highly recommend this property!

The Perfect Place
We were beyond impressed with this house and it's location! Even tho it was sort of in a "neighborhood", it felt so private with the huge patio in the back overlooking the valley/creek bottom below. My sister and I spent all day out there while the guys went fishing. We could see Patagonia Lake! There was every accommodation needed and then some. We even got visits from a coatimundi, a pair of roadrunners, cardinals and several other birds we don't get to see in MT. This was our first experience with a VRBO and we were pretty pleased with how blessed we were with this choice. Everything was just perfect, we can't think of a thing we'd change or suggest. Our host was amazing! He got right back to us if we had any questions. I don't want to rave about this property too much because we want it to be available for us!! Truly, we can't say enough! Thank you Carew, you were great! We hope to stay with you again!

It's hard to identify our favorite part of our stay. We loved the views from the amazing patio, the cozy fireplace, the well-stocked kitchen, the fantastic shower and fluffy towels, the relaxing hot tub after a day of hiking, the inviting library, and the SILENCE! It seemed that very detail of hospitality was anticipated by Carew. We can't wait to return!

Glorious Magnificent Unbelievable View!!!!
We stayed for a (wonderful) month. This is a great couples/family/friend-reunion house with three bedrooms and a big sociable kitchen living space (plus an entertainment room with a big tv and a treadmill). But the big outdoor terrace and 180 view of the hills mountains sky and valley are what make this location singular. Literally, you cannot see another dwelling in the entire 180 view. We had a drinks at sunset every night, and every night the sky was different. Sunrise was equally inspiring. The view from the semi-private hot tub ain’t bad neither. Secure and cozy, with a very attentive and proactive host-this is a great spot for anybody looking to get away. Definitely try lunch or dinner at nearby Wisdom’s. La Cabaña in Nogales is also terrific. My partner and I stayed for over a month with our two dogs-and everybody loved it.

Amazing spot to get away. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up
This place is definitely about getting away from the crowds. If you like your quiet and your solitude, you’re going to love this place. Mixed in with a lot of nature and of course the beautiful views. We were able to take a nice long walk and spend some in the hot tub. You got to make it a point to be in the hot tub at sunset with nice glass of wine. Or with a cup of coffee at sunrise. Clean, cozy, and welcoming. We had everything we needed. A great value for the price and we would definitely stay again!

Exceeded Our Expectations - we'll be back!
We found the place with no problems. It was exactly as looked as in the pictures. Although the photos couldn’t do justice to the view. My wife and I stayed out on the patio until well after dark, enjoying the beautiful sunset and welcoming the stars. We brought our food to prepare and the kitchen had everything that we need. For desserts, we enjoyed the nice chocolates that the homeowners left for us as the welcome gift for us as the first people to stay there. I’m a very fussy sleeper but I was in heaven. The AC worked perfectly. I love a cold room to sleep in. Also loved waking up to the birds. We went out on a long hike and there are trails all over. Easy access to trails down near the creek. The map provided was easy to follow. The house had everything we needed but for us the real highlight was the outdoors, with the expansive patio, the hot tub, and the views. I could stare at the scenery all day long and we did. My only regret was that we only had two nights to stay in this beautiful desert retreat. But we’ll be back the first chance we get.

About the host

Hosted by Carew Papritz

Host profile image
We are long-time residents of Southern Arizona, having lived in our home in Rio Rico for over 10 years.

We are travelers who have rented many a VRBO over the years and have discovered what we like--and what we don't like. We bring this experience to our home, wanting our guests to have the most amazing VRBO experience they've ever had--as can be read by our many highly-rated reviews.

We like being hosts because we meet the most amazing people from all over the world. And many of them are return guests, which is the finest compliment any host can have.

If love amazing views, seclusion, hiking out-the-door, and a home-away-from home, then we believe you will love staying at our place.

What makes this property unique

The view. Everyone loves the view. Perched on a high ridgetop, you have almost180 degrees of high-desert valley, creeks, foothills and mesas, all leading up to the 9500 foot, Mt. Wrightson, located in the Catalina Mountains--all without a house to be seen.
And if you like hot tubs, you have a view on the lower patio of all this and more.

If you love to hike, we have an extensive hiking system directly below our house that starts on the other side of the Patagonia creek and riparian area. The area is filled with birds galore, white-tail deer, javelina, and coatimundi's (a cross between a racoon and a small monkey!). And yes, you will see cattle roaming our all over, as this is open-range area.

Yet, you are only 30 minutes to the 250 year-old Spanish mission and now artistic community of Tubac. You are only 40 minutes to the old mining and ranch town of Patagonia with a unique and quirky mix of artists, birders, and cowboys. Should you wish to walk across cross the border, you can visit the old town of Nogales, Sonora, only 30 minutes away.

As we mentioned, we have been VRBO renters over many years at many different properties. We know what it's like to not have everything you need and thus we try to make sure you want for nothing. We have a fully-stocked kitchen for all your cooking needs, including three different types of coffee makers (including an espresso machine), a complete spice rack (which always seems to make it in our reviews), and a wide assortment of pot's, pans, wine glasses, liquor glasses, and . . . you name it.

We believe in giving our guests an amazing and memorable VRBO experience, which should be the goal of every VRBO stay. If you have any questions about the place or the area, please feel free to reach out and we gladly answer your concerns. We hope to see you soon and welcome you to your home away from home here in Southern Arizona!
