About this property
Ulmia Riverfront Retreat, Aurora viewing hotspot, Carlton River, Tasmania
A 1960’s built cosy, refurbished riverfront home, nestled in a lovely garden created over 50 years by the original owners.
The original owner selected the block from several others to position the house with the most protection from easterly weather while enabling the best view across the river to the east, from the balcony built off the living area.
The location and aspect of the balcony and living room make Ulmia one of the best Aurora viewing sites in the region…all without leaving the comfort of home…
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you’ll need to cook delicious meals at home. The smokeless fire pit doubles as a bbq which sears the perfect steak!
A 40 minute scenic drive from Hobart, at the gateway to the Tasman Peninsula, and only 20 minutes to Hobart airport.
Explore the dramatic coastal scapes of the Tasman Peninsula, with awe inspiring convict and early settler history. Port Arthur, Cape Raoul, Shipstern Bluff, Tasman Arch, tessellated pavement and Eaglehawk Neck are all a half day trip by car.
The river is accessible via a basic jetty ramp, which is perfect for launching the kayak or “tinny”…or the most perfect secluded riverfront picnic spot. Expect the local ducks to swim up looking for morsels!
At night, the smokeless fire pit is a great gathering point, or the freestanding wood heater is a cosy touch on colder nights; there are 2 heat pumps and 2 off peak heaters inside as well, so staying toasty warm in winter is never difficult.
For a city trip and the numerous day trips from Ulmia, just pack a picnic lunch and head off, or sample lunch from the numerous establishments on offer, from country pubs to restaurants and wineries.
Hobart is a beautiful 40 minute drive from Ulmia…and numerous activities from there will keep you as busy as your schedule allows.
A ferry trip from Hobart docks to MONA is a favourite activity, the Lady Nelson tall ship also conducts participation sails around the Derwent River, with historical commentary of course.
From Hobart, the stunning Huon and Derwent valleys offer delightful day trips by road, with endless sightseeing stops and guest attractions.
Alternatively, just “retreating” at Ulmia is the houses original purpose, with a delightful sunroom at the front, perfect for reading -or just sitting.
There is a cosy TV room with smart TV and wifi is supplied free of charge.
The gardens are fully maintained and always looking their best; numerous little nooks and seats, paved areas and lawns, all offset by a cute little boathouse at the bottom of the garden.
This space is the ultimate in privacy and seclusion, positioned directly over the riverbank.
Perfect for art, yoga or meditation, a very special little spot. Ulmia is built for privacy, relaxation and pleasure…enjoy!

About the host
Hosted by Jacqueline Chappel

I’ve lived all over the country but completed school and 5 years of hospital based nursing training in the Hobart area in the 1980’s.
Now working in mental health as a rural and remote mental health specialist nurse practitioner.
I love a peaceful, quiet life…gardening, art, food and wine, travel, and of course friends and family.
