About this property
Villa Leonie - Serene & elegant historical 4bed home in superb location.
Sometimes when travelling you stay somewhere so perfect it becomes a destination itself. Elegantly styled with authentic historical charm and contemporary comforts, you will find this 4 bedroom home a serene and comfortable oasis in a convenient location in Merida's centre, near Santiago square. The original historical pasta tiles, 18 foot ceilings and historical details give the house an otherworldly charm to complement visits to the gorgeous historical sites of Merida. Contemporary details and dreamy white linen curtains, refreshing palm fringed private pool and colourful bougainvillia cascading over the walls and balconies give perfect holiday vibes. One of my guests described staying in the house as 'feeling like a millionaire novelist." The house is a short walk to the fresh fruit, veg and flower market at Santiago Park (open every morning). Only 15 mins from the airport, and 10 mins walk to Santa Lucia square and Plaza Grande. Beautiful spacious rooms with a variety of spaces indoors and outdoors to enjoy. With 5 beds ( 3 queen and 2 twin) the house sleeps 6 comfortably. Spacious enough to accommodate 2 families but also suitable for a couple. The front rooms were once used as an art gallery.
The living room, kitchen and master bedroom all open onto a small planted courtyard with fountain on the main floor. The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances, coffee maker, ice maker, foreman grill, and a NutriBullet for making fresh fruit smoothies. There is a utility closet adjacent to the kitchen with a washer and dryer.
The main floor master bedroom has a comfortable queen bed, with 100% cotton sheets, a private ensuite with double sinks, and features antique European doors and mirrors as well as a spacious clothes closet. Original antique doors can be shuttered for darkness or partially opened to let through breezes.
The second bedroom upstairs, also with an ensuite, has a queen bed, clothes closet, incredible views of palm tops and the Santiago neighbourhood. Black out blinds hide behinds soft white linen curtains for sleeping darkness. There is a lovely private terrace with citrus trees in pots (kumquat, lime and orange) overlooking the garden but with views to downtown Merida.
Facing the garden is a casita containing the third and fourth bedrooms (one queen, two twins). These large and bright bedrooms share access to a bathroom and shower overlooking a small ornamental garden with tree ferns. There is more limited clothes storage in the casita bedrooms.
Every bedroom has an individual "slimjim" airconditioner unit, plus ceiling fans to customize your ideal sleeping temperature.
Palm trees, frangipani, bougainvillea, jasmine, lilies and orange trees all grow in the sunny private garden. A covered veranda is perfect for morning coffee, or watching swimmers enjoying the filtered swimming pool. Using your laptop, you can spend the day working here.
Throughout the house and garden/terrace areas you can access the 100mbps Fibre Optic Internet. There are google extenders for the wifi so that it can pass through the thick maposteria walls.
For visitors to Merida, Santiago is one of the most desirable downtown neighborhoods. One of the oldest colonias in Merida, the Santiago district is to the west and north of Plaza Grande. The church, founded in 1637, was once much grander; now little remains of the original structure other than the modest sanctuary with a baroque statue of Santiago and the dated inscription above the entry. There is a park in front of the church and a market next to the church, with fruits and vegetables, meats, and a good flower selection. There are also a host of excellent cocina economicas ( highly recommend Taqueria Lupita) , sundries stores and an ice cream store. There is also a children's playground in the park, a beautiful water fountain surrounded by shade trees, and a large concrete area used at various times for skateboarding, big band music (every Tuesday night!), dancing, fairs and temporary markets.
I have a superstar manager who is fluent in English and Spanish. They are super responsive and excellent at communication. They will meet you at the house upon your arrival and be available to you should any issues arise. My excellent management team is connected to the builders of the house and they know it intimately. Any repairs are done swiftly as needed. I have had around 100 bookings on the other app if you want to check out my rating there, the house has the same name.

About the host

I'm Emily. I live on Vancouver island and manage my place in Merida with the help of my amazing management team. I love Merida and Mexico for the incredibly rich history and culture that is a delight to experience while travelling. My favourite place in the world is Lamu, Kenya and I love to go on safari whenever I get the chance.
Why they chose this property
I love the neighbourhood of Santiago for a lot of reasons. It is a destination in itself with the gorgeous cathedral and the vibrant market. From Santiago, it is only a ten minute walk to the main square and its activities, also easy walk to Santa Lucia and Santa Ana squares. It is relatively peaceful and quiet and the perfect base from which to explore Merida.
What makes this property unique
I love travelling to go somewhere new and different. My property feels exotic to me with its blend of history and modern details. I took my inspiration for the garden and casita from the styles of architecture that you see in Lamu.
