About this property
Meisel House - Four Bedroom Cottage, Sleeps 10
A true architectural gem, Meisel House stands proudly atop a rugged outcrop of the Precambrian Shield, offering breathtaking views of a serene private lake (Beaver Lake). Nestled within 130 acres of conservation land, this one-of-a-kind retreat invites guests to step away from the everyday and into a world of rustic beauty, artistic charm, and natural tranquility. Designed by Kingston architect Wilfred Sorensen in the late 1960s, the home embodies the vision of its original owners, political scientist John Meisel and artist Murie Meisel, blending art, history, and nature into an unforgettable escape.
From the moment you step inside, Meisel House unfolds like a journey through time. A grand spiral staircase winds upward, weaving through the home’s multiple levels, with a stunning fireplace at its heart. The great room welcomes you with soaring ceilings and large windows that frame the pristine lake and lush forest beyond. Wander through the dining area into the well-equipped kitchen before discovering the Meisel House addition—featuring the Conservatory and two guest bedrooms, each space thoughtfully designed for comfort.
The house’s unique layout offers both privacy and adventure. Two bedrooms lie on the lowest level, while the King bedrooms are perched higher, providing elevated views of the surrounding wilderness. Climb further to reach the mid-level loft, an inviting retreat for reading, before ascending once more to the upper loft, where the home’s architectural artistry reaches its peak. Meisel House is best suited for active families and guests who embrace the charm of multi-level living.
Beyond its captivating interiors, the property’s natural surroundings call for exploration. Meisel Woods Conservation Area, donated by John Meisel to protect its rich ecosystem, borders the property, offering acres of scenic trails. After a day of adventure, unwind in the wood-fired sauna or gather on the screened-in porch to watch the sunset over the water. Whether you seek solitude, creativity, or cherished moments with loved ones, Meisel House is a rare retreat where the past and present harmoniously converge.
